This song is fantastic. Five stars on my iTunes :). The way it's sung is brilliant, sets the mood so perfectly for a shy, brilliant child lost, angry with God, threatening to take his life-! Just wonderful. This family vacation had gone all to hell, most likely the mom trying to incorporate a new dad into the family. This kid's thinking about his life, his schoolwork, his morbid thoughts, his father...cats are totally overpopulated, like people...maybe the cat is a symbol for his possible future? this dead cat, compared to his wanting to take his life (what's his...like everyone else) but the cat's in the street. it's vulnerable. And that last verse...man, i love that shit. |

i haven't read any of the other comments so sorry if i repeat anything "One hand on this wily comet, Take a drink just to give me some weight, Some uber-man I'd make, I'm barely a vapor" this is a sum up of his life, he has something going (the comet) but that doesn't give him any more value. he takes the drink to make himself feel better. i think in this situation the comet is the band "They shone a chlorine light on, A host of individual sins, Let's carve my aging face off, Fetch us a knife, Start with my eyes, Down so the lines, Form a grimacing smile," i thought of the joker when i first read this, he isn't really happy at all so someone will carve it into his face because he's never really happy. and maybe the light part is about how he sees everything he's done wrong and this is the only way he'll smile. i nkow there's deeper meaning i just haven't quite figured it out. now i'm going to be up all night thinking about it...... "Close your eyes to corral a virtue, Is this fooling anyone else? Never worked so long and hard, To cement a failure," i think this is pretty self explanatory aqnd a really powerful line as well "We can blow on our thumbs and posture, But the lonely is such delicate things, The wind from a wasp could blow them, Into the sea, With stones on their feet, Lost to the light and the loving we need," so you know how in the old cartoons th character could just blow on his thumb and be completely better? well i think that's what he's referring to, except the people who are doing that are very fragile afterward, barely holding on. i think he is talking about depressed people. say one wrong thing and they might commit suicide. "Still to come, The worst part and you know it, There is a numbness, In your heart and it's growing," i love this because i have been depressed and i have also felt completely numb and i would honestly rather feel everything than nothing "With burnt sage and a forest of bygones, I click my heels, Get the devils in line, A list of things I could lay the blame on, Might give me a way out," clicks his heels to go home and each bad thing he did was when he felt most at home. and the last two lines are self explanatory "But with each turn, It's this front and center, Like a dart stuck square in your eye, Every post you can hitch your faith on, Is a pie in the sky, Chock full of lies, A tool we devise, To make sinking stones fly," i haven't fully comprehended this part, but i think the pie part is talking about demons dressing as angels. so many of us do that! |

ok this song is about two people who are in love that cannot be together. so the guy visits her as much as he can, and this is their last night together. it's a very sad song actually. this is going to be difficult to explain, but i think the guy got some job offer somewhere far from her, and he took it not only because it's a great opportunity, but the catalyst was his fear of being so in love with her. the last line "You'll never see me again, cause I miss you already." is why i think that. he loves her so much that it scares him, and now he isn't going to visit her. but when he did visit her, they did nothing but have sex. so the only way he can get her attention now is by arousing her. such a beautiful song |

for the record it's actually "i've found comfort in this bottle and you out of sight." so him drinking and her gone. yeah, this song is about and extremely complicated relationship. the two people love each other but there seem to be a lot of factors keeping them apart and even bitter towards each other. i think most of the lyrics are pretty self explanatory, but beautiful at the same time which i think is a hard thing to do. this song doesn't just outright say the meaning, but it isn't really difficult to figure out at the same time. this and your taste is my attention are their best songs for sure. |

ok i think i tried to over analyze this song. but now i think it's what i had in mind when i first listened to it. so it's war and the main character's country is being bombed "Light flickers in my room Planes flying by dropping down perfume blanket out the sky Wander through the smoke Grabbing for food Choking on the air Might pass out soon" self explanatory, but i think when he says "dropping down perfume" he is becoming a bit delusional, since that would make it something..desirable "Why do I assume these things are bad? bad Burnt down? Burnt down bad? bad Burnt down? Burnt down" so that's pretty self explanatory as well, why does the destruction have to be bad. now i go back and forth between the guy becoming delusional, or this just being an all around morbid song. a common theme in literature is destruction bringing new life, so maybe he sees beauty in the chaos. |

holy fuck now that I've figured this out (in my opinion, of course) this is my favorite song. I can't even convey into words how amazing this song is. my interpretation of it: "Hey man, Where can I go. It's too late to find holes in the ocean, I know" the holes in the ocean are the continents. (i love that they're described as holes). the kid is talking to a wiser person than he "I said man, Stay here awhile, I will never find safety in numbers, Here on the mile" so the kid is desperate for company, I think everyone has basically left him because he doesn't fit in. he is asking the wiser man to stay with him. each person on earth is one number, he says he will never find safety in numbers because there won't ever be anyone there for him because he's a freak. he is accepting the fact that he is...at least in the opinion of the majority of people. and the mile is life. "Say man, Is this in the right. I wanna heal the cracks in the sidewalk, And keep it alive, Set down on the ground, And I laid my head down. To see, I closed up my eyes, As the numbers went by, And that's when I started this dream" so the kid asks the man if it s right of him to want to heal the earth and the people inhabiting it. he doesn't know for sure because of others seeming to be happy here. he closes his eyes and doesn't look at the passing people, then he starts the dream. and he has to close his eyes and ignore the world to really be able to see. they say it is a dream now because this is when the man responds, and i think the man is a figment of the boy's imagination. he has created the wise man because he has been so alone for so long. "Said son you're still young, But your mind has grown old it seems. Now go tell your sister, To show me her new magazines" so the wise man is pretty much saying that the kid is wise. the kid made a sort of father figure in his head, he may not have had a great one of his own. the wise man says to get the sister's magazines because they are brainwashing her....maybe the sister represents the majority of people here. yeah she does. "Said man, Sit for awhile. Said son, He said son, How you've only begun On the mile On the mile On the mile" kid asks the man to keep him company, almost begs him. the wise man replies by saying you are too young to worry about this stuff (i can't tell you how many times i've been told that!) the reason the kid's own mind tells him that is because of the things society has caused him to question about himself "I've been to the moon and the stars, And the go inbetweens. Now go tell your sister To stop playing with new machines" the wise man has been all around, he knows his shit and his greatest concern is to tell the kid to try to fix society. "Tell them to keep things quiet" the wise man (but in reality the kid) wants peace...this line is repeated for emphasis because he is so ready for things to settle the fuck down but he has no idea how to go about fixing it and the rest has already been explained. shit that's an amazing song |

so i read through all of the comments to see if anyone had the same idea as me, and no one did. some had parts that were similar. maybe that makes me wrong, idk, but here is my take on the song: "i've been waiting i've been waiting for this moment all my life but it's not quite right and this 'real' it's impossible if possible at who's blind word so clear but so unheard" so there is this seemingly perfect moment, but it isn't quite right because he is still himself...i mean, he was expecting a fairy tale like moment, and that just didn't happen. he still has his lazy eye, which the lead singer, Brian, really does have. it is clear to him that this is what it's like to have a moment like this, but it was so unheard because he expected it to be completely different from the way, maybe, his friends told him these moments were like. i have definitely felt that way many times in life so far. "i've been waiting i've been waiting for this silence all night long it's just a matter of time" since the moment so far isn't going as planned or expected, he is hoping the silence of another room will bring the person he wants to be with closer to him. i'm thinking there is a girl and she likes him, so this is his opportunity, but he thought that once they both liked each other things would just fall into place, but it didn't turn out like that, and now he is finally alone with her, and it's just a matter of time until things become they way he wants them to. "to appear sad with the same 'ol decent lazy eye fixed to rest on you aim free and so untrue" so i think this is saying his lazy eye makes him look sad in a way, and his subconscious sort of believed that the lazy eye wouldn't be there but "the same 'ol decent lazy eye" still remains, focusing on and liking her nonetheless. now that he knows the way things really are in the moments, everyone is rearranged because he sees things in a different way, but they maybe seem even more intimate now because they still love each other with all of those imperfections, because everyone has their own lazy eye. "lost and loaded still the same 'ol decent lazy eye straight through your gaze that's why i said i relate i said we relate it's so fun to relate" lost and loaded i think means he is confused about this revelation, but he gained knowledge and experience from it. now he feels like he can relate to everyone because he knows they have their faults, and he night have found hers or something, so they relate. then i think when he says "its so fun to relate" he is actually being sarcastic because sometimes imperfections really suck, so it's a real blast when it makes you feel like shit... "it's the room the sun and the sky" i think that is just him taking it all in, how it isn't how he imagined but it's still how it is, etc. i love this song! |

i didn't really read any of the other comments so sorry if it's redundant to any others. i definitely think this song is about trying to avoid death, but realizing there is no escape...it's inevitable to all living creatures. "It's the common reactor It's the long way out It's the stream of a motion blur That swirls around till you drown" common reactor, self explanatory the long way out is summing up life in a way the stream of a motion blur that swirls till you drown is basically saying life happens so fast, hence the blur, then you die. and that's all there really is to life if you think about it. i think when he says "i couldn't put it down" he means he can't accept it. i was thinking in terms of putting something down on paper solidifies it's existence in a way, and if he writes or says it, then it seems too real. kind of...out there, but that's my guess. i think the part about the picture is telling us about a girl he knew and was close to who died, and that is probably why he started to think about death so much, and the thought scared him. and then he says he couldn't put it down again, so even though he had an experience with death he still cannot admit to himself that it is real. "Let's break the window panes And separate the walls from all the nails And maybe if we're loud we'll stay alive While everybody wants to join the fight But now it's too late But even if we barricade the door And seal it with the blood found on the floor We're always going to cross the finish line While everybody wants to run and hide But now it's too late" i think it's some people in a metaphorical room who basically do everything they can think of in order to avoid death, and it's too late because hell, there's NO avoiding it. great song, really great song. |

First of all, this song is not about breaking up or anything along those lines. I'm sick of everyone trying to categorize modest mouse with that mainstream bullshit. the beautiful thing about this band, is that Isaac doesn't write stupid shit pertaining to relationships and such. Relationships are something that everyone can relate to so almost every band nowadays has really straightforward lyrics about them...but with Modest Mouse, one has to analyze the lyrics and use their fucking head, I know, sounds crazy, but if that's too much to deal with go comment some bullshit james blunt song or colbie whats-her-face. sorry, had to rant a bit, off topic. but anyway, in my opinion, i think let it all drop is supposed to mean like, shit going to happen, and there really isn't any avoiding it, so just let it happen. and probably just deal with it best you can. "if the damned gave us a road map then we'd know just where to go", that's pretty much saying everyone is going to follow like, the devil's path of some sort,always the easy route. talking soda pop is exactly what Icameasarat said in a comment on the first page. then the opinion part is obvious, he's not going to lie just to make someone feel better. "My ears were pressing firmly right against your mouth to hear When you tried to spit the venom out, your words were not so clear" he was listening, but your argument is all fucked up by now, and the opponent has no real, legit retaliation.
