people have pondered and dissected this song to death. That is not meant to diminish the beauty and mystery of this work at all. But I am going to throw my 2 cents in now:
ER and FM are all of us. We all are excluded from things we perceive to be usual events in our life (for ER it was illustrated by a social event); we all put on a front ( the face in the jar by the door) for other people, hiding our pain and shame; We all have something to say that no one will listen to (writing a sermon that no one will hear); there are parts of us that we keep hidden, but really may be inconsequential when viewed by others (FM sock repair); The only thing we take with us when we die is our name. What ever that name is(reputation, literal name); We all die alone. FM wiping his hands could be absolving himself from the responsibility of no one being saved(much like Pilate regarding Jesus). As a priest, he is charged with the care and spiritual nurturing of his parishiner's salvation. Certainly during this period of the Catholic church's history, there was failure in this area. Of course, that is seen in any church's history during the 60-70's.

This song is about a guy named Adam. He send an email to them with his suiced ntoe. Rumer says that Adam wrote the song (the song was the note) and they took it so that evrybody would know him. They named that song after him so that they would know that its his song and not theirs. Sort of out of honor. So just know that its not just a pop hit, or whatever. |
