Ludo – Lake Pontchartrain Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't really understand what all this discussion about what the crawfish symbolize. I think he uses the crawfish the same way he uses the idea of po'boys, bayou, and the Choctaw Motel. There's classic touristy Louisiana things. He's trying to prove to the listener that he is indeed in South Louisiana driving toward Lake Pontchartrain. (Though the way he gets there in the story is rather circuitous.)

As for the lake monster, that's just for fun.

Hadouken! – Turn The Lights Out Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure that ultraviolet is right (because it keeps with the concert theme that seems to be going on in this song), but I still can't resist hoping that it's ultraviolent (because that would fit with the Clockwork Orange mood of the horror show). It's also possible that I'm just a freak who loves that book way too much.

Operator Please – Two For My Seconds Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about a girl and her new lover. She doesn't really love him, but enjoys escaping into the her fantasy where he's the Prince Chaming she've always dreamed of.

But it doesn't really work. (Childhood thoughts can't comfort us in the house of mine). And in the end she just gets mad and blames him for not being the right guy.

Meanwhile he wants to make things more serious ("This other step that we can step up to") and she's not interested in a real boyfriend, because she's happier in the fantasy world she created.

Bloc Party – She's Hearing Voices Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with LynxMecha.

Kele- "It's a song about mental illness. When you get medication it comes in different color, so that's where the line 'red pill, blue pill' comes from..."

Bloc Party – Talons Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow! I didn't go to HIV/AIDS but that actually would make a lot of sense in the context.

My first thought (and I don't know if I believe it anymore) was about a distructive relationship particularly one involving cheating.

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 15 years ago
After watching the video again and again and again (and more importantly listening to the lyrics), I think the song is about gorwing up, and the vanishing idealism. It starts off with the very innocent "I can ride my bike with no handlebars." and follows with all these grand plans, but as you go farther and farther (and maybe as you get more power) you become corrupted and turn into the very monster you were trying to stop.

That's why they end the song where they started. "I can ride a bike with no handlebars" to show how far they've come.

Bloc Party – The Answer Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with carriefish. It's about the religious people of the world and how they think that just by praying and hoping for something (like an end to world peace or world hnger) it will happen. But it takes more than just prayers to "feed the five thousand". They keep looking for a saviour/prtector to do the work for them and meanwhile wast their money on frivilous things (Cola).

It's a less talk more action type song.

The Wombats – Tales of Girls, Boys and Marsupials Lyrics 15 years ago
Don't laugh at me for trying to give this song any serius meaning (because we all know it's just for fun), but basically this song introduces the entire album.

It's all Tales of Girls (which most rock songs are), boy (who want the girls and are just generall;y populating the earth and songwriting sphere) and marsupials (The Wombats themselves). Simple enough.

Another Lyric Correction:

"Dying, Chasing, Who will face me?" not "dying, kissingcome embrace me"

Bloc Party – Better Than Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
I've listen to it countless times and the best I can make "typical" and "memorize me". Though it sounds like Kele has thrown in a random R in memorize so it may be "Mermorize?" or "Mesmorize?"...

I guess well have to wait until the lyrics page of the main site is updated to see for sure.

Bloc Party – Idea for a Story Lyrics 15 years ago
I probably should have read the rest lyrics before I posted, because I've a couple more corrections.

*Lucean is spelled Lucian, after the Greek writer and rhetorian.
*S41 should probably be SW1(a london postal code), though this is debatable because S41 is an experimental HIV medication.
*I'm not sure, but I think the line should be "Rich Boys they just need a hand or a hand-out" because it makes more sense with the "from Papa" bit
*Beset as in "The young beset that history will only eat itself") should be have said
*Typo on history

Anyway, sorry to be so nit picky. Great Song. Bloc Party forever!

Bloc Party – Mercury Lyrics 15 years ago
Appart from the astrological meaing, Mercury being in retrograde might also just mean that something is truely off. Retrograde is when planets are on the opposite side of their orbits and therefore appear to move backwards across the night sky.

So even though he's doing everything normal, the results appear to be the opposite of what they should. He's always disoriented, lost, and unable to succeed.

Bloc Party – Better Than Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song can go to ways, and I'm not quite sure which one it is.

Option 1: Kele(or whoever the narrator is) is rebuking a girl for spending too much time studying religion. She seems obsessed with original sin, Adam and Eve, and consequences of her actions. Kele is clearly in love and wants it to take a more intimate direction, but she's not interested. He admits at first just being together was enough (the garden), but if it's fading (like it appears to be) he's ready to take it farther and he believes that he has enough passion for the both of them.

Option 2: The song actually religious. The girl is much more a scholar (cold hard facts) than a worshipper (faith and emotions). She keeps thrying to find the answers to God, but just gets more and more lost as she looks. Kele has faith and is trying to share it with her.

I don't know which one I think. The album title makes me lean to the first, but when I looked up the verse stated in the song I'm not quite sure. (FYI Corinthians 15:22-For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.)

Bloc Party – Cavaliers and Roundheads Lyrics 15 years ago
Great Job, Huddy! I just have one thing to add or correct. The line I want reperations isn't about wanting to repair the friendship. Historically reperations are payments made by the losing country in a war to the winner. Kele wants his friend to pay for what he has done to him. (which leads "the streets to run with your blood" thing)

Maxïmo Park – Books from Boxes Lyrics 16 years ago
I find my ideas are best described in a line by line method.

Night falls and towns become circuit boards
*(It’s a cold sterile world)
We can beat the sun as long as we keep moving
From the air, stadium lights stand out like flares
*(Everything is a show)
And all I know is that you're sat here right next to me
*(He’s in love)
We rarely see warning signs in the air we breathe
*(He usually doesn’t care about the consequences)
Right now I feel each and every fragment
*(but this is different)

This paper trail leads right back to you
*(He can’t escape how much he loves her)
You say you need me to step outside
*(She doesn’t want anyone to know)

You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes
*(She’s moving)
You passed me up so as not to break a promise
*(And they can’t be together)
Scattered Polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar in the long run
*(but they still had an affair)
Said you knew that this would happen

Well this is something new but it turns out it was borrowed too
*(He thought is was true love, but it turns out it was a fling)
Why does every let down have to be so thin?
Rain explodes at the moment that the cab door closed
*(Rain symbolizes the end, like tears. When she drove off it was all over)
I feel the weight upon your kiss ambiguous

You have to leave, I appreciate that
*(He knows she can’t stay forever in their imaginary world)
But I hate when conversation slips out of our grasp
*(But he still wants to pretend they could work)

You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes
You passed me up so as not to break a promise
Scattered Polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar in the long run
Said you knew that this would happen

Two bodies in motion
This is a matter of fact
It wasn't built to last
*(It’s just empty sex)

Two bodies in motion
This is a matter of fact
It wasn't built to last

You spent the evening unpacking books from boxes
You passed me up so as not to break a promise
Scattered Polaroids and sprinkled words around your collar in the long run
Said you knew that this would happen

The pounding rain continued its bleak fall
*(The tears are still coming down)
And we decided just to write after all, after all
*(and the romance is turned to distance)

The pounding rain continued its bleak fall
And we decided just to write after all

Maxïmo Park – Nosebleed Lyrics 16 years ago
I know it's already been brought up, but the nosebleed thing has always puzzled me. It's not just this song, but it appears in others. Bloc Party uses nosebleeds in Luno. "And your nose is bleeding/ you've been lying to me"

I think it means change, but I was wondering if it was a British thing. Like some reoccurring symbol that doesn't happen in the States.

Maxïmo Park – By The Monument Lyrics 16 years ago
I know that’d you’ve already kind of wrapped this one up. And I understand it’s about the mixed up memories and experiences at Grey’s Monument, but it has always told me a slightly different story. A relationship and a failed one at that…

You said you'd like to see me again
*(something you’d say after a date)
And then, it all unraveled
*(but then they broke up)
I heard that you were seeing someone
*(She’s moved on)
Not such an insignificant other
*(And it’s serious)

It seems my moves were far too swift
*(He went to physical and to fast)
In life, some things are worth the effort
*(I should have taken it slow)
I touched the place where your hair had been
*(he misses her)
I pulled on the shirt that you left round mine
*(He’s still holding on to her memory)

Defacing pictures of famous people on the train
*(“We can do what we like because we are in love” It’s apparently a lie or possibly a memory)
Standing by the monument just waiting for the rain
*(the monument is their relationship. He was waiting for this. He knew the “rain” or the break-up was coming)

In my wallet with your photobooth smile
*(He still keeps her with him, but it’s fake and lifeless)
And I, wearing my waterproof jacket
*(I’m prepared for the end/”the Rain”)
Posterity has hold of us now
*(whatever we had is past)
Am I just waiting for the next chapter
*(Should I just move on?)

We'll sleep tonight in seperate towns
*(they are so far removed from one another/they think too differently)
At dusk, we see our disparate futures
*(disparate means different… so this line is rather self explanatory)
I tore a sock to bind up your golden hair
*(“I cared so much for you”)
We found a hotel bar to sustain our last night in vain
*(They tried a quick fix, but it didn’t work)

Defacing pictures of famous people on the train
Standing by the monument just waiting for the rain

No more late night calls
Where tear drops fall
*(It was a rocky relationship)
No more late night calls
Where tear drops fall
Tear drops fall
*(Tears are a representation of the rain)

Standing by the monument just waiting for the rain
I'm just passing my time with you on my mind
*(He doesn’t know where to go without her)
I'm just wasting my precious time
*(He need to move on but he can’t)

I'm just wasting my time with you on my mind
*(Still in love)
