Modest Mouse – Dig Your Grave Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm under the impression that the line is "I'll help you dig it," not "I'm already digging," but I prefer "I'm already digging," so I hope that's what it is. The reason why I'm under this impression is because "I'll help you dig it" is a line from another song of theirs, "You're The Good Things," and Modest Mouse tends to have similar lyrics in different songs. |
Modest Mouse – Florida Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The line is "Has all deserted hive," not "Was always a beehive." I remember that from the packet. |
Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Did anyone notice the connection between the line "Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon, every dawn one yells surprise, and each evening one's consoling, saying 'See, it wasn't quite as bad as it could have been'" and the line "Good old Nostradamus, he knew the whole damn time, there'll always be an east from west and someone in there fighting" from Education? |
Modest Mouse – March Into the Sea Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It just struck me that "We all stumbled around tangled up in our cords" could be a double reference to children who used to strangle on their umbilical cords, meaning that our materialism is strangling us to death. |
Modest Mouse – What People Are Made Of Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe that this song is related to This Devil's Workday. The line "At the surface you can watch them float by" reminds me of the line "All those people that you know floating in the river are gone." Then again, they both could all be connected to the "floating" theme that is revisited in songs like Float On ("We'll all float on anyway") and Gravity Rides Everything ("At least I won't see you float away"). |

First comment on an awesome song: posted. "Trial by error, another crucifixion" - a reference to the wrongfully convicted and executed? |
Clutch – Wicker Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"A needle in the haystack to crack the sky" is now officially my favorite line from any song ever. |
Modest Mouse – Trailer Trash Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I've never lived in a trailer house, but all my life I've lived in a public housing duplex, and every time a friend visits my house for the first time they always crack jokes about it. I let them do it at first, but eventually I have to tell them to stop, because I'm very sensitive about it. Whenever they tell jokes about the size of my house, I always feel just like trailer trash. (I am also struggling in high school.) This song, much like Sleepwalking, holds great personal value to me, lyrically speaking. |
Modest Mouse – Sleepwalking Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I can't even begin to express how much I relate to this song. Before I looked up the lyrics, I wasn't much of a fan of it, but now I consider it my anthem. I just relate to it so much! Just last week, I stole my dad's bike and spent all night riding around town trying to find a girl friend's house, and just the week before, I had been going around with my cousin in the wee hours of the morning, raiding cars and setting off fireworks! It's so fun to be young. I'm glad I'm not squandering my youth with boring concepts like "maturity" and "responsibility"! XD |
Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I have a theory: "When you get to the promised land, you're going to shake that eye's hand" I don't think this has only one meaning; consider if you will that "shake" can mean "evade" or "escape" (e.g., "shaking a tail" to mean "evading the police"). When I first listened to the song, that was how I interpreted the line; it was only later that I saw the connection to "shaking hands." I wonder if it is a double meaning, or if only one or the other was intended. |
Victoria Tibblin – Make Me Pretty Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think I've become interested in this artist, after hearing this song recently in a music video that was a daily feature on Deviantart today. I'm roaming Youtube at the moment, listening to others of her songs. There's not much; she's too new, or else too underground. She doesn't have a Wikipedia article yet, either. |

Actually, I don't think it was Freddie who sang this one. It was probably either Brian May or Tim Staffel. |
Queen – Tear Down The Walls Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Correction on my lyrics: "So hard to bear," not "So hard to bare." |
Queen – I've Been To Hell And Back Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Correction on my lyrics: "Tell all the boys I'm back in the city Tell all the boys I'm back in town" not "Til all the boys are back in the city Til all the boys are back in town" |
Queen – Going Back Lyrics | 15 years ago |
@Myself (lol) This song (as well as all the other songs on Preordained) was never released on an album. (As such, Preordained can be considered an album in and of itself, composed from previously unreleased 1969-1973 material.) |
Modest Mouse – Invisible Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Also, in response to Pageweknew, I think "We'll get crushed by the ocean but it will not get us wet" means "We'll get crushed by the ocean, and we'll die so fast from it that we won't even feel the water." I think it kinda ties in to the title of the album, "We were dead before the ship even sank." |
Modest Mouse – Invisible Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Er... not just materialism, but also complacency. Or whatever it's called when you think your little habits are important. |
Modest Mouse – Invisible Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I just have to say that this is one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs ever. Also, I like to change the last line before the "we'll get crushed" part, whenever I sing along. Instead of saying: "We were never invisible, but that I guess we did not see," I say: "We were never invisible, no matter what we did not see." The song may be about environmentalism, or whatever, but I prefer to think that it's about materialism. The lines "got a strong cell phone arm," "not invisible inside your car," and "no matter what consuming sort of mission you're on" from the first stance are what make me think so. Here's how: "Got a strong cell phone arm" = got a strong attachment to material possessions "Not invisible inside your car" = unable to hide the fact of your materialism "No matter what consuming sort of mission you're on" = no matter how important you think your little habits are Anybody agree with me, or see my point? |
Modest Mouse – Fly Trapped in a Jar Lyrics | 15 years ago |
None of you seemed to notice the pun: one wing is odd, not even! Also, although he pronounces it like "leave," I think the line is "One wing isn't even enough to LIVE." |
Modest Mouse – We've Got Everything Lyrics | 15 years ago |
@Duff Man According to lyrics007.com, the shouted lines are, respectively: "We were dead, lying there on the floor" (after "left it dying on the floor," partially obscured by the repetitions of "we got") and "Everyone an air force or a fat ass cook" (after the repetitions of "we got," and before the last rounds of the chorus) However, listening to the song, I am willing to bet that the second half is wrong. The words that they interpret as "air force" sound more like "M-one," and the words that they interpret as "fat ass" sound more like "dab that." In short, I have no idea what the second shouted line is, but I'm fairly certain that the site got the first line correct. @Erilou I think the actual lines are: "We crashed in like waves into the shore" And "We receded like waves out of the storm" That's what I hear, anyway. The majority of sites found with Google claim that it is "stars," but one site (which happens to be the same one which provided me with the shouted lyrics at the end) claimed that it was "store," which is phonetically closer to the words "shore" and "storm" that I hear when I listen. In any case, I definitely do not hear an -S at the end of either line, so I'm willing to bet that "store" or "storm" are more likely to be the actual word. |
Clutch – The Yeti Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Supergump's guess is the best I've heard. |
Clutch – The Dragonfly Lyrics | 16 years ago |
@Cassia A "katydid" is a type of insect. If you look at one on a branch, or in your hand, it shivers. It also makes a squeaking cry. I'm willing to bet the song has nothing to do with anorexics. |
Clutch – (In The Wake Of) The Swollen Goat Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Never mind. It turns out "an albatross on (or around) your neck" is synonymous with "a cross to bear" as an English idiom. I guess I've never heard this expression before. http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/albatross+around+your+neck.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albatross_(metaphor) |
Clutch – (In The Wake Of) The Swollen Goat Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The line "albatross on your neck" was referenced today in a Sinfest strip, which I will link at the bottom of this post. Does anybody know if this song got that line from a different source? Because in the Sinfest strip, it is represented as "the albatross around your neck," which is slightly different from the line in this song. Is this line from a book, or a movie, or something? http://www.sinfest.net/archive_page.php?comicID=2879 |
Clutch – (Notes from the Trial of) La Curandera Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This lyric page is missing the last lines: SHED NOT A TEAR FOR HUMANITY GOD FETCH MY STARS SHED NOT A TEAR FOR HUMANITY GOD FETCH MY STARS |
The Flaming Lips – Vein of Stars Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Nothing there to see you down on your knees" = "No god listening to your prayers. Meh. I think that if you can accept death as the END, then that can make you a strong and happy person. I think "25, 26, 26," is just the writer lying on his back counting stars in the night. |
Clutch – The Regulator Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I always thought it was "Come with me and walk along this mile." I kinda liked it better, though the actual lyric is still awesome. Among my favorite Clutch songs. Others are "Basket Of Eggs," "Ghost," "10001110101," and "Release The Kraken." |
Modest Mouse – King Rat Lyrics | 16 years ago |
In the "Deep water, deep water" stanzas, the beat and bassline in the background remind me of All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. It might just be me, though. |
Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh, ZiggyStarbuck already pointed this out. Sorry, didn't read the comments first. Silly of me. |
Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Wow, big error on this lyric page: The line "who was given a seat in the stand" is incorrect. The actual line is "who was given a pat on the back." Listen to the song and you'll see there's absolutely no way he's saying "a seat in the stand." |
Clutch – Big Fat Pig Lyrics | 16 years ago |
:( No one has commented on this song. How sad. The lyrics are so funny. I think it's just a satire on religion in general, but it might be specific to cults and cult-like religions. I don't think it's actually being legitimately critical of religion, but it is certainly making jest of it, all in good fun. |
Modest Mouse – Jesus Christ Was an Only Child Lyrics | 16 years ago |
@TBeasley -------------------------------------------------------------- The lines "you should hide your kids / while the dogs run wild" reminds me for obvious reasons of "Wild Pack Of Family Dogs", anybody think theres a link? I think there's probably a continuation of the theme, but not like they tell continuations of a story or anything -------------------------------------------------------------- "Wild Packs of Family Dogs" was about religious evangelists converting people, so it would make sense that this song, mocking Jesus and Christianity, would tie into that one. I also saw the connection. |
Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I should probably also mention that this is just about the best Modest Mouse song ever. I just can't stop listening to this and singing along to it. Also, does anybody else think it sounds kinda like "Bukowski"? |
Modest Mouse – Shit Luck Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is one of those great Modest Mouse songs I just can't stop listening to. @stephh925 -------------------------------------------------------------- i was on a plane a couple years ago heading to ny, just relaxing, listening to modest mouse on shuffle, and all of a sudden i hear isaac screaming at me "THIS PLAN IS DEFINITELY CRASHING!!" scared the shit out of me. -------------------------------------------------------------- Hahaha! That's the funniest thing I've heard all day! Ahahahaha! @codyfromdetroit -------------------------------------------------------------- hahaha i love the little guitar noise at the very end after "and my heart has slowly dried up" -------------------------------------------------------------- Me too. |
Modest Mouse – Never Ending Math Equation Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Oh my god and oh my cat!" Great line. @Pinstripermike -------------------------------------------------------------- "To me, I thought since Isaac is smart enough to make the lyrics and meaning to this song, that he would believe there is a god". If he were smart enough he would not believe in god. Science does not support a god and anyone with any sense believes in science. ------------------------------------------------------------- I'd just like to say that if you are very smart, you believe in science, BUT YOU ALSO recognize that science cannot DISPROVE god, and so you MUST recognize also that god IS A POSSIBILITY, and one that must not be dismissed merely out of preference of the facts. In deciding whether one believes in god, one must be very careful to make a logical assessment, and it is very possible to intelligently argue both sides of the issue. (Personally, I believe that the universe was created by a divine creator, but I do NOT believe that he has any kind of moral code or ultimate plan for humanity, and I do NOT believe in heaven or hell.) |
Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Like the first commenter said, it's about Cowboy Dan hating society and God, and western civilization and its industrialization ("I didn't move to the city, the city moved to me") I think this song is supposed to be the centrepiece of the album; after all, it's the song that best encompasses the Lonesome Crowded West. |
Queen – The Prophet's Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I would very much like to read or write a novel inspired by this song. I have a feeling I would really enjoy such a piece of literature. I'm thinking the seer, the prophet, and the wise man are most likely the same person. I don't think the wise man and the mad man are the same person, though. I think the mad man is the son who from his mother's love is estranged, and who marries his own precious gain. He becomes a tyrant perhaps, and the wise man is the one who attempts to lead his people to safety from the clutches of the mad man, whose madness is like a flood. In the first stanza, the speaker tells of the wise man, who foresees the coming of the "storm" of the mad man. In the second stanza, the speaker goes back to an earlier time and tells of the wise man when he was younger, first receiving the power of foresight. I think it is also implied that the mad man received the same ability, but instead of becoming wise (like the other man), he went mad. The third and fourth stanza return to the wise man, but with a greater sense of understanding for his words. Now that the threat of the mad man has become imminent, the people have begun to believe the wise man's prophecies, and they are willing to take his hand and quicken to the new life. The fifth stanza tells the story of the mad man's youth, and how he, like the wise man, received the ability to see the future. But unlike the wise man, he became mad, and his visions were filled with nothing but cynicism and death. He was estranged from his family, and loved only the power he later gained, but only death will be his dowry. Stanza six is where the wise man begins leading his people in exodus to safety. Stanza seven is the wise man remarking to himself on the people who have come flocking to him. They are a diverse group of people, a human zoo. Stanza eight is a decree by the mad man, when he has realized that his people are fleeing from him. He proclaims that he will kill them all. The vocal overlays in the middle are representative of the wise man's doubt and growing fear that he will not be able to save his people from ruin. I think perhaps his prophecies were only linked to the mad man, and he cannot foresee his own destiny. The ending is unclear. I think that either the mad man wipes out the wise man's followers, and as the wise man lies dying he tries to assure the survivors that love is still the answer, or else the mad man loses all of his power and the people are vindicated, but the wise man begins to go mad as well, haunted by the sound of the mad man's laughter even after the mad man has died. |
Queen – The March Of The Black Queen Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Why do I follow you and where do you go" reminds me of Brian May's solo song The Wilderness. I've never heard this song. I'll have to find out what album it's on and then go get it. |
Brian May – The Wilderness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is the only good song Brian May made in his solo career, in my opinion. |
Pink Floyd – The Happiest Days of Our Lives Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I also thought the ending sounded like something out of the Lion King soundtrack. I always rocked out to it when I first got into this album. At the beginning, where he says, "Stand... still, laddie," I always thought he was saying something in German, that sounded like "Nein?" and then (phonetically) "Gehauheie!" It was only just now that I listened to it and realized it wasn't that at all. |
Clutch – 10,000 Witnesses Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is so fun. |
Queen – Going Back Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh, I simply love Freddie's voice on this one. @TheOlsna I don't know what album it's from, but you can get a lot of Queen's early undiscovered songs (including this one) on the composition album Preordained. |

I thought it was, "The sound of the city, baby, seems to be so clear." I'll have to listen to it again. |

Lovely song. Yeah, I think I read somewhere that this song was the prototype of Brighton Rock. |
