Pink Floyd fan - what does Freddie Mercury have to do with this song? As for Kinks vs Van Halen - they are both great bands, and each version rocks in it's own way. The Kinks version is classic garage rock perfection, and VH is full-blown '70s heavy metal power. Love them both. The Kinks are my favorite alltime band, but I don't see how some Kinks fans can write off the VH version - Eddie's guitar work made it a classic. |

The song is autobiographical. Dave Davies wrote it when he reached a point in his life where he realized he couldn't remain the hard-partying raver anymore and he had to grow up. The "clown" is Dave's former self. Ii read it in one of the many books on the Kinks I've read, probably "Kink: An Autobiography" by Dave Davies. |
