I'd say law4 is on the right track. I consider the song a meditation on what "the road" is and how it resonates with his character. When he's not on the road, you could imagine his life is hectic and chaotic. However, once on the road, there is nothing to do but drive. Fueled by the serenity of his surroundings, the constant hum of the engine, and the lack of any need for mental concentration, his mind reaches a nirvana-like waking dream (up to and including swimming in the pool of his unconscious in the video). In other words, the road relieves us of everyday humdrum life and serves as food for the soul. |
