Band of Horses – Factory Lyrics 13 years ago
I just like that "I fell asleep to the greatest movie of the year" line, it simply justifies the whole song. I fell asleep during Lord of the Rings. And during the first Harry Potter too! And maybe even more. Didn't even bother go seeing Avatar.

But really, this line just says a lot about the person and the state he's in, that's what great lines are about.

Alanis Morissette – You Learn Lyrics 13 years ago
I think there might be more to this song than the message in the chorus, that every experience is good to have and makes you the person you are and everything...

Look at that last pre-chorus:
"Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually, anyway)
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend"

Something's definitely burning here, but I'm not sure what.

Klaxons – 4 Horsemen Of 2012 Lyrics 14 years ago
My favourite song on this perfect record.

I really like the way the verse are rather read than sung... With a lot of British accent - they're making it sound like an old traditional English poem - I believe it is written that way, with the rhymes and the repeated sentences -
and then they mix it with these lyrics about the apocalypse and those crazy vocals and drumming... Like an intergalactic punk rock... It's just perfect.

Art Brut – Bang Bang Rock & Roll Lyrics 14 years ago
enjoymywaffles's input was really interesting, but then again, I do think it refers more to the Velvet Undergroud than to the Libertines for example (I can't recall too much Libs songs dealing with the sex, dugs and rock'n'roll... ok, some of the are, but not in a cliche way) .

I get this song as the other side of the coin of Bad Weekend. In Bad Weekend Eddie (in Art Brut there is never 'a protagonist', it's always Eddie) slags the indie scene and popular culture, with everyone conforming around the hyped bands, while he wants to listen to something different.
But here, he's not so keen about the people who think they are so special because their favourite album is that unlistenable album by VU, White Light/White Heat. As the VU always were a commercial failure and never sold too much (unlike the underrated Doors for example), it's easy for people who consider themselves as people with a good taste to like them.
But it seems like Eddie is looking for a simple good pop songs, like the one his band plays, and just can't stand the sound of the Velvet Undergroud. It's like a kick in the face of those people who understand so much, to show no respect at one of the rock'n'roll biggest taboos.

Noah and the Whale – 5 Years Time Lyrics 14 years ago
Well, I hate it when people interpret songs by what they know about the person who wrote them and things like that.... but I'm going to do just that!

We know what actually happened. 5 years after this song was written, Laura Marling left this guy who wrote this song. The end is sad. And I just listened to Noah's & The Whale second's album (5 Years Time is off the first), and it's ALL about the break up, and how said and broken he is. Very sad, really touching.

And that lights 5 Years Time in a bit different way... The character in the song is very sensitive, and his all world depends on her (as sung in the second album). So I wouldn't call this song pessimistic, but there is definitely a small black cloud that hangs in there, which has nothing to do with by-the-book-summery-love-songs, I think he knows that if she leaves, he falls apart.

I would fall apart too if Laura Marling left me!

Art Brut – Emily Kane Lyrics 14 years ago
I can tell the exact moment I fell in love with Art Brut... I was listening to this song for the first time (I was already familiar with Formed a Band and Direct Hit)... And the lyrics in the verses are nice but nothing special... and then comes the C-part:
"I don't even know where she lives
I haven't seen her in ten years" (once again, quite obvious lyrics)
{pause}
"Nine months, three weeks... " This is where this song got amazing, I suddenly had a big smile, and suddenly I understood what this band was all about!

(By the way, Morrissey also does this exact counting in the Smiths' Had No One Ever, but differently of course...)

Art Brut – Pump Up The Volume Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't really think that it matters here which is more important, the music or the sex, they should come together.
This is actually one of the most passionate songs about music ever! Even in the heat of the moment, you can't keep your mind off the soundtrack, which is SO important in the music lover's life. And this music lover must share his love of music with the person he loves.
Everything is better when soundtracked right.

Art Brut – People In Love Lyrics 14 years ago
The thing here is that most (American) break up songs deal with the endless misery... "Don't you know it's the end of the world, it ended when you said goodbye" sort of thing.
But this song, as written by probably the most British band ever, is aware that the misery is not endless, in a week and a half it's over. So it accepts the break up, put in proportion. It's not saying "don't be sad, there are plenty of fish in the sea!" or stupid things like that, cos we all know we can't avoid feeling bad. But it's gonna be over soon enough.

Furthermore, this maybe the best Art Brut song music-wise. It builds itself up and makes this witty non-singing singer sound like he's about to cry. Perfect.

Morrissey – Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself Lyrics 14 years ago
So as everyone said, this is about the music industry. Only by thinking of the term "music industry" you can think of the problem it has - it tries to sell as much emotions as it can. We can place this song next to the Smiths' Paint a Vulgar Picture, and Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar.
But the interesting thing is that even though most of us did not have encounters with evil record industry people, we can feel the insult Moz describes, and that's above his career, it's more universal than what the lyrics mean.

I just wonder about that last paragraph, I'm not sure who he addresses... Could be the former Smiths members, like PrettyPettyThief suggested, but it feels like he's talking to a friend who should be on his side. Maybe even the fans, I'm not sure.

Anyway, maybe my favourite post-Smiths song.

Not the deepest song and not the deepest discussion, but this is another good example of why songmeanings.net is cool, thanks for your comments!
(Great song, now I know what it's about)

Placebo – Speak in Tongues Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe it's a double meaning, "Speak in tongues": both mutual understanding, as Iplaybeer put it, and kissing as well. Expressing feelings with kissing, or maybe the kiss is more important the speaking... Anyway, given the line "How long I burn to touch you just the same" and Brian's writing dealing with a lot of sexuality, it seems pretty obvious.

Pearl Jam – Army Reserve Lyrics 14 years ago
As everyone agree, and as the title of the song states, it's about the family of a soldier.

But the fact that this song was co-written with a guy who has been waiting in death row for about 13 years for a crime he had never done, leaving his wife and kid back home - that kinda gives it a new dimension.

Faith No More – Digging The Grave Lyrics 14 years ago
I came to know this song by a cover of an Israeli band, which performed it only with piano and vocals, slower and softer. And maybe that inspires my perspective of a song, not as an anti-capitalist punk song, but more of a relationship song.
The grave, the hole could be the loneliness which is easy to drift into - comfortable somehow. But he tries to be like the person he's addressing - he want to open the door, to undo the tie. But when the other person closes the door - it could very dark and depressing. Something like that.

Placebo – Speak in Tongues Lyrics 15 years ago
No one mentioned the Lou Reed reference:
"Kitty came back home from on the island"
is based on
"Candy came from out on the island"
from Walk on The Wild Side.
I don't think there's a deeper reference here, like this Kitty girl is a drag queen or something, but maybe it does bring some dirt and sleaziness to this relationship, Brian likes that, as much he likes referring other great songs in his lyrics.

Razorlight – Dalston Lyrics 15 years ago
Listen, there's no way Johnny wrote this song *to* Pete, but maybe about Pete. I may not know Razorlight that well, but here is the story I imagine...
First, Johnny lives in Dalston with the Libertines and all the drugs and the sleaze, but then he decided that that had not been the life for him, those had not been the people for him. So he gets clean, moves away, loses contact with Pete & Carl and the rest.
And then there is this girl, whom he knows from back then, and she still lives in Dalston, still a part of that drug scene. And Johnny really doesn't want her back there in this dirty territory, doesn't want her taking drugs, being controlled by all these scums (maybe even Pete & Carl. but they're not scums, they're great!). What makes this Razorlight song so brilliant (and usually the words 'Razorlight' and 'Brilliant' don't go together) is that you can hear in Johnny's voice how much he's hurt, he gets really emotional because he's afraid he's going to lose that girl. No way he felt so strong to Pete.

Just Jack – Starz In Their Eyes Lyrics 16 years ago
I may be tabloiding the song and narrowing its message, but I can't help wondering if he's addressing Mike Skinner there. Well, it's quite obvious that he's stepping into what was The Streets' unique genre (and doing in quite well), so he must have been a fan. And I don't read all of these English tabloid, but I understand that Skinner is shown there a lot, with the drugs and everything. So my first thought that he's singing about his favourite musician turning from this cool average rapping guy to this celebrity depended on the tabloids, messed up with drugs.
