Simian Mobile Disco – Hustler Lyrics 14 years ago
It's about electro.

“'Hustler,' [...] reflects the root for the term 'electro,' and has a few applications when making assumptions concerning the origins of it, as a genre and wonderful way to spend an evening out with friends or a good group of associates. 'To combine form' would be a standard clue as to who may or may not jot a few ideas down in a song, longing for a sound that has never, to date, existed.

Enjoying this track is about understanding how, lyrically, the empirical evidence stating clearly, most people who hold this music and genre dear if not necessary, it is an emerging style difficult to find in high quality.

This is something lingering on the senses, almost a feeling or vibe but reminiscent of BT’s 'Heaven Scent,' or any other progressive, ground-breaking track defining the lining of the cloud where kids who are in the know can proudly tout a new viewpoint on music in the car or in their world in general.
While all of this music converges to swerve one way or another, metaphorically speaking, the driving force behind a majority of thematic undertones defining the type of sound a person can lose it to, dancing or romancing the idea that a few musical directions mention vision and are as solid as a truck is where it becomes clear that the point in this electro genre is to create rather than imitate, to move forward rather than backward."

Vampire Weekend – California English Lyrics 14 years ago
Sofauxboho, you're dead on. I also think the band is talking about the promulgation of California culture.

As well-read Columbia grads, the band focuses on the differences in the way Californians and people on the East Coast speak our language. Perhaps a friend of theirs visited CA and came back changed -- speaking differently, using products that allowed her to live a "green" lifestyle, as is popular in CA, and wearing few layers even though she's back in the northeast.

I think the song is about the difference between the general perception of California and the reality of California. It celebrates CA by suggesting that everybody yearns to live the CA lifestyle.

Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Lyrics 14 years ago
I like what people are saying about how this is a story about Johanna and her deceased brother and a Judge.

Just an idea: "Johanna [drives] slowly into the city" to settle some affairs with the Judge after her brother's death. When her brother died, she went to Sloan-Kettering and saw the ring, a family heirloom, on his finger. When she meets with the Judge, she realizes that he took the ring from her brother.

She somehow takes the ring back, but can't handle the memory it holds of her brother's death, so she throws half of it (the physical ring) away, while the other half (the memories) remain with her. The Judge, ashamed of having stolen from one of his clients, resigns and moves to New Mexico, where he "[cuts] his teeth" on harmonicas as he searches for a new profession.

Vampire Weekend – Run Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that by "take two," he means "think twice" about eloping. But no matter how long he thinks about it, he can't be sure that he's making the right decision. Besides, he doesn't want to waste time.

The Drums – Let's Go Surfing Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's "Oh, mama / I want to go surfing / Oh, mama / I don't care about nothing." That's what it sounds like, at least.

This song is so east coast, so adolescent.

I'm thinking of a small town kid with a big city mentality. He's unlucky, insignificant. But he has faith in the sunny side. Someday he'll leave the dullness for the daylight.

I can't believe I like this song. Amazingly catchy. Obviously a breakup anthem. And Jesse McCartney is so cute trying to do pop with a hip-hop edge.

Bloc Party – Letter to My Son Lyrics 15 years ago
Absolutely my favourite song on the album. I think blocpartyband07 is right about both "Marlana" and "Oscar."

After hearing this song the first few times, I figured Kele was talking to both the girl and his son -- the lines about being a rock and the last lines asking for forgiveness seemed to be directed at the son. The rest of the song seems to be about the girl. He seemes frustrated overall, thinking about how he got into all this "trouble" -- where it started, how one thing led to another -- and what he's trying to do now.

Brilliant song, though. Quite reminiscent of the Two More Years era, as pickupstyx said.

Rediscover – Do You Think Lyrics 15 years ago
This chick's boyfriend is realizing that he likes cross-dressing (though he's not necessarily gay), and he's so comfortable with it, he actually asks the girl what she thinks of his new look.
Gotta love Rediscover. Such wacky pop nonsense.

I played this song at my birthday party. We totally got down. This song is the best kind of insane.

The Long Winters – Fire Island, Ak Lyrics 15 years ago
He says something he knows he shouldn't have said - he tried to keep it in, but inevitably it came out and upset all sorts of people. He is now somewhat relieved because he doesn't have to wonder nervously about whether or not his words reached the person they were directed at, but at the same time, he's ready to start his car and run away from the icy stares of the citizens of Fire Island. They are prying at him, trying to get him to say more of what he shouldn't say.

He's falling out of lust with her, realizing that what attracted him wasn't really who she was. Perhaps it was the idea of being with her and the way things felt around her that he "loved."

Death Cab for Cutie – Photobooth Lyrics 16 years ago
This song sounds so submissive, I can only assume that Ben is singing about giving up on a relationship that was choked with arguments, possibly with a lover who was adverse to affection or denied their true feelings:

"All the slander and double speak
Were only foolish attempts to show you did not mean
Anything but the blatant proof
Was your lips touching mine in a photobooth"

After all the skinny-dipping and doomed photobooth "I love you"s that were their summer, the relationship had to end. Here's what I get from the chorus:

"And as the summer's ending
The cold air will rush your hard heart away
You were so condescending
And this is all that's left
Scraping paper to document
I've packed a change of clothes and it's time to move on"

She takes her insensitive nature and decides to leave him as summer turns into a chilly fall, and he has no regrets as he remembers all too well her condescending nature. He leaves her with nothing more than a letter, perhaps letting her know that he did truly love her. He then leaves town and all the memories of the girl, the photobooth and their sordid summer.

Ima Robot – STD Dance Lyrics 16 years ago
So few comments. Weird.

No, there's definitely another syllable in there between "me" and "love." And Luxamnesiac makes a good point.

I think the song is a plea for a friend (I see the friend as a girl) to let go and dance. To dance so freely that lightning sparks from you and your body shines. "Just show me your love" seems to hint that a boy is asking a girl to dance with him, and there's something intimate about it. And that very long, catchy verse ("Spotlight, blue suede shoes...") sounds like a description of their night out dancing.

It's all about the DANCE! Gotta love it.

The Moldy Peaches – Anyone Else but You Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so oddly brilliant. I guess it's trying to emphasize the way we get when we're in love - nothing makes sense except the fact that we are completely fascinated with the person we love.

Spoon – Black Like Me Lyrics 16 years ago
This song makes me smile wide and want a window to look out of.

I think it's about trying to believe in people, and how it's so hard to do when your life feels like it's falling apart. And then Junie/Jenny/Ginny is that one person who "takes care of the light," who keeps the hope alive that there's still something out there to believe in.

I don't know if it's Britt's accent or just his voice, but it gets really hard to tell what he's singing sometimes...

Bloc Party – Emma Kate's Accident Lyrics 16 years ago
It's the singer talking to or thinking about a girl friend of his who he knows is being abused by her lover and is lying for him. He sees the truth through her lies, and he tries to tell her that the relationship she's in isn't true love. Whether he cares about her because she's a close friend of his or because he's in love with her doesn't really matter.

Bloc Party – Rhododendrons Lyrics 16 years ago
He's tried to make his dreams reality, but he's failed so many times. He escapes his weights with a bottle of whiskey and finds himself in a patch of rhododendrons. As he looks up at the stars, he hears the words of all the people who've asked him what his plans are, told him what a failure he is, scorned those dreams of his. When he finally silences those voices, all he can do is think about his current state - drunk again in the rhododendrons, he laughs sardonically to himself, over and over until he drinks himself into oblivion.

The Stills – Baby Blues Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics on the album insert say "I'm with the times" instead of "I'm worth the time," and I'm pretty sure that's what Dave/Emily were singing, but "I'm worth the time" definitely makes more sense.

This song brings me the image of a man and a woman meeting and feeling exactly the same way about each other, understanding each other completely. So they talk to each other about their fears and dreams, about what they see in each other, and they decide to be together.

If I'm right, Dave/Emily's duet was the perfect way to do this song. If I'm wrong, their duet was still perfect.
