The "ecstasy" part sounds in English like ez-la-see, but I have no idea what that could be in French. |
Stromae – Alors on danse Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It sounds more like "lui dit ainsi dans la merde" and "ecstasy communique", although I'm not even sure if it's ecstasy. Could be wrong, French isn't my first language. |

The Smiths – This Night Has Opened My Eyes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'd agree with a few other posters that this song is probably about abortion, or at the very least getting rid off a baby in some way or another. 'In a river the colour of lead...dump her on a doorstep, girl' To me, this sounds like the pregnant girl is desperately and irrationally contemplating her options - Should she drown the baby? Should she leave it on a doorstep? 'You kicked and cried like a bullied child... save your life because you've only got one' The relationship is a complete shambles, the girl is probably quite young - she should get rid of the child to save her life. 'The dream is gone but the baby is real... she could have been a poet or, she could have been a fool' Ambivalent attitudes to abortion - you shouldn't bring a baby up in a home that can't provide for it, but then you'll never know what the baby could have grown up to be and every life is worth something. I reckon 'could have been a poet or, she could have been a fool' implies abortion - surely if the baby was still alive, Mozza wouldn't say 'could have been' but rather 'could be'. |
Blur – He Thought of Cars Lyrics | 14 years ago |
*and a search for meanings that consume. |
Blur – He Thought of Cars Lyrics | 14 years ago |
In my view, HTOC depicts a future dystopia. The main character has become detached from the rest of society and in his confusion killed himself. The media just shrugs this off, he was 'confused'. He's just gone to heaven 'instead', it's nothing to worry about. There's a great sense of trying to get somewhere else, physically or otherwise. The demand to get somewhere has forced the motorways to all 'merge', the rich try to buy their way out (a great nod at this point to the lottery -as elsewhere in the album - and the idea of the working class escapism and alienation that it embodies). The main character looks to technology - cars and planes - to get away. He craves human interaction, something which has likely died out in this age of apathy and alienation. After all, there is 'no one'. The 'panic' at Heathrow, wanting to escape to the 'blue', further points to the utter desperation of humanity to escape. International war has escalated, Albarn mentions Moscow, Colombia and America. Global warming has changed the planet - 'it shouldn't snow this time of year'. There is, though, a noticeably dismissive and casual tone. It's not really important. In this dystopia, death and war mean nothing - there are no meaningful human relationships, so why would it? It is a yearning to escape and meaning that consume. |
Robbie Williams – You Know Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
If a man could be his own fantasy Then to only breed in captivity is pointless I’ve been doing what I like when I like how I like it’s joyless Only you know me What a waste of war this peace Baby steps and two more sleeps ’Til I get to say sorry I get hysterical, historicals of love is just chemicals Give us something to stop me Only you know me Since you went away my heart breaks everyday You don’t know ’cos you’re not there You simply found the words to make all modern (?) feelings fade away Only you know me I'm doing fine And the sun often shines What are you thinking? I done bruised up my mind With this thunderbird wine Baby I'm drinking Only you know me Since you went away my heart breaks everyday You don’t know ’cos you’re not there You simply found the words to make all modern (?) feelings fade away Only you know me Only you know me Since you went away my heart breaks everyday You don’t know ’cos you’re not there You simply found the words to make all modern (?) feelings fade away Only you know me Only you know me Only you Only you Only you know me |
Bloc Party – Where Is Home? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"I want to stamp on the face of every young policeman To break the fingers of every old judge To cut off the feet of every ballerina" I think this is mainly an expression of anger towards the inherent prejudices in society - the white policemen and judge who assume the worst of black people and the dainty graceful ballerina who is the ultimate white middle class ideal. |
Jacques Brel – Grand Jacques Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is my own rough, literal translation. C'est trop facile d'entrer aux églises It’s to easy to enter churches De déverser toutes ses saletés To pour away all one’s dirtiness Face au curé qui dans la lumière grise In view of the priest, whom in the grey light Ferme les yeux pour mieux nous pardonner Closes his eyes to better forgive us Tais-toi donc Grand Jacques So be quiet, great Jacques Que connais-tu du Bon Dieu So that you know about the Good Lord Un cantique une image A hymn, an image Tu n'en connais rien de mieux You don’t know about anything better C'est trop facile quand les guerres sont finies It’s too easy when the wars are over D'aller gueuler que c'était la dernière To go and yell that it was the last Ami bourgeois vous me faites envie Middle class friend, you make me envy Vous ne voyez donc point vos cimetières You do not see your cemeteries Tais-toi donc Grand Jacques Be quiet, great Jacques Et laisse-les donc crier And leave them to cry Laisse-les pleurer de joie Leave them to cry with joy Toi qui ne fus même pas soldat You who weren’t even a soldier C'est trop facile quand un amour se meurt It’s too easy when a love dies Qu'il craque en deux parce qu'on l'a trop plié So that he cracks in two because one has bent him too much D'aller pleurer comme les hommes pleurent To go and cry, like the mean cry Comme si l'amour durait l'éternité As if love lasts for eternity Tais-toi donc Grand Jacques Be quiet, great Jacques Que connais-tu de l'amour So that you know about love Des yeux bleus des cheveux fous About the blue eyes, about stray hair Tu n'en connais rien du tout You don’t know about anything at all Et dis-toi donc Grand Jacques {2x} And tell yourself, great Jacques Dis-le-toi bien souvent Tell yourself this quite often C'est trop facile It’s too easy De faire semblant. {2x} To pretend |

The Smiths – Vicar in a Tutu Lyrics | 15 years ago |
For me, this song is about a vicar who is childishly happy, blissfully ignorant of social pressures. Somewhat of a comment on happiness, naivety and the backwards nature of the social pressures that stop us from doing what we want and being who we want. |
Lily Allen – Chinese Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I see you from the sky And I wonder how long it will take me to get home (Lily is on the plane home, looking down on presumably London as the plane comes to land - wondering how long it will take to get to her mum's house.) I wait for an hour or so at the carousel I have a cigarette to pass the time Cause the traffic's hell (She waits for her luggage at the carousel, and then drives to her mum's house through the heavy London traffic) I don't want anything more Than to see your face when you open the door You'll make me beans on toast and a nice cup of tea And we'll get a Chinese and watch TV Tomorrow we'll take the dog for a walk And in the afternoon then maybe we'll talk I'll be exhausted so I'll probably sleep (Lily is delighted to see her mum opening the door. Her mum does very typically English mumsy things - making her beans on toast, a cup of tea, ordering a chinese takeaway - yes this is definitely what it means, not getting stoned or otherwise - and watching telly.) You wipe the tears from my eye And you say that all that it takes is a phone call I cry at the thought of being alone and then I wonder how long it will take til I'm home again (Her mum comforts her and is only a phonecall away at all times. I imagine here Lily is referring to touring, and how she has to be "alone" on tour wondering how long it is until she will be back home.) I know it doesn't seem so fair But I'll send you a postcard when I get there (It's not fair her and her mum can't see each other - but Lily will send a postcard from whichever destination she ends up in.) |
Cold War Kids – Welcome to the Occupation Lyrics | 15 years ago |
A criticism of society and the establishment? "They" - society/establishment - "want pigeons on a stool" - they want unintelligent subservient vermin who won't challenge the status quo. "They don't want poets" - society wants functional cogs who make active contribution's to society "house painter", "defending criminals" i.e. lawyer etc. as opposed to creative thinkers. The house painter's solace is photographing models i.e. he is unhappy with his functional role in society and takes solace in creativity. "Sisphyus in the sun" - S was an ancient Greek king who perpetually pushed a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down again - the narrator sees no point in teaching children, fostering creativity and intellect when this isn't what society wants (or, as part of society, the children want). "The devil" - the evil in society? America? the establishment? I liked jasonthomas88's idea about hypnotism and also about wealth. Looking past the veneer of a functional society, you can find evil in the "details" but we are hypnotised or perhaps too blinded by wealth to see this evil. "Can't work in politics or be in the circus" You must either choose to be part of society and function within its restrictions, or be an outcast - the idea of running away to the circus. "Goodbye valedictoriasn goodbye punks" - I'm English but I looked it up and I think a valedictorian is the best student graduating from a university in a year. So basically, we're losing our academics and rebels, because they're not deemed desirable by a society that favours pigeons on stools. Mint song. :) |
Jamie T – Rawhide (Feat. Lily Allen) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
well this is what i thought when i first heard the song (although could be very wrong) a group plan to rob a post office they rope in a "rawhide" to there group, he is reluctant to do so but feels he has to prove himself "is it all to do with pride?" the first verse starts off with the robbery of the post office, where the postmaster's son is threatened and tells the group to take what they want because he dislikes violence the second verse goes back to the group planning the robbery, plans of mice and men, flashing forward to them getting in the car to the post office.. the rawhide is rushed into the decision and teased "don't want to take the heat" the motorways fly by... he doesnt want to get to the post office, and the journey seems to go so quickly lily allen narrates the girl in love with the "rawhide", she tries to save the man she loves by stopping him joining the group and taking part in the robbery, but he lies to her and goes anyway feeling he needs to prove himself yeah, that's about it. it could all be very wrong, but as song interpretations go, i quite like it. |
John Cale – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It seems simply, to me, a song about a broken man; disillusioned with love, religion and life. On one hand, the biblical references allude to the demise of a man's faith, and the demise of his relationship with God. The faith he once firmly had, has been questioned and ultimately torn apart. The lyrics can also convey a man disillusioned with (romantic) love, through his own bitter experiences. Love is a competition, or a power struggle. The things he once celebrated, he has lost confidence in; his celebrations have become cold and broken. |
Maxïmo Park – Russian Literature Lyrics | 15 years ago |
a few subtle references to crime and punishment? "forth floor" where raskolnikov murders his two victims "nervous about tomorrow" raskolnikov's anxiety and guilt after his murders "size of you purse" raskolnikov steals the old lady's bulging purse - besides, money is a lot of the motivation behind his murder. perhaps? perhaps? |

The Libertines – The Boy Looked At Johnny Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I know i'm commenting on this a bit late in the game but... i believe this song is from the point of view of a male lover of Johnny Borrell. "the boy looked at Johnny" is a line from Patti Smith's Land, which is a song about gay sex. "he did it with his hat on" - he had sex with a condom on "and a saddle" - he is literally riding the boy "and a gun" - with his penis (the cowboy references also lend themselves to homoeroticism) Soho is mentoned as it is famous for its sex industry and prostitution... hinting that Johnny will miss Soho because of this. Everybody in Soho "goes la di da" i.e. they're homosexuals... Johnny will miss the homosexual sex industry and rent boys of Soho... I think this song is just a bit slanderous towards Borrell, that is if this song is even about Borrell. (It could be another Johnny). Also, Doherty was a rent boy in his early days in order to fund his addictions... this song could be related to that. |
