Perfect interpret, gaiusbertus. I also get that sad feeling of one of them trying to hold on to the past, not living in the future. |

Okkervil River – It Ends with a Fall Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I just got from it that it's about the narrator having tried (or succeeded) to rape his (ex-)girlfriend, and she's calling for help. He's sorry, realising that it's over. He lost his self control, which could be a reference to sexual lust.
Incredible song anyhow. |

Cloud Cult – Love You All Lyrics

Not that Cloud Cult is to be compared to the genre, but this is the kind of song that no techno/trance band is able to create.
Sweet song. Simple meaning. I'll leave it at that. |

Cloud Cult – When Water Comes to Life Lyrics

"Everybody here is waiting for the next creation"

"You are made of water"
Yes. There's no such thing as god. We are made of water, but people will still hang on to their beliefs concerning religious creations. |

Let me hear the rain tap on your street

Madrugada – What's On Your Mind Lyrics
|
Why do you always stay
Miles away
And two steps behind
Where the past is still living
Beautiful and forgiven
Do you not see
That you live in a dream
Performed with such a passion that you can't help being touched by it. The soar vocals, the jangly guitar, the heart-felt lyrics; maybe their best song. |

Catchy tune. As Michael stated, it is their A-B-C in learning to make songs. |

Okkervil River – Calling and Not Calling My Ex Lyrics

I think it's a sweet song with very believeable characters. And it's a sad-celebrating christmas theme, hence the walks in the snow with pines around and the very christmas inspired melody-elements.
Good song. Great ending. |

Okkervil River – Get Big Lyrics
|
electric_warrior pretty much summed it up for me. I get the feeling that the narrator is hating the current situation, but trying to deal with it best as possible, maybe holding on in wait for better things to come. "Another song will begin again". Beautiful. And this song is followed by A King and A Queen, perfect. |

Not much hidden, it is Patterson's way of telling what a woman told him on tour. At least I think it was on tour.
I really like this song. It has such a sweet melody and suitable lyrics. Makes me think of a sunny morning after no sleep, and this woman is sitting with tears in her eyes, watching her sleeping children. |

Drive-By Truckers – The Purgatory Line Lyrics

The sister to Goddamn Lonely Love?
It is drenched in loneliness and painted in empty heartaches. All the references to angels, devils and jesus understates that the narrator is willing to believe in anything to find a way out of his state of mind. |

This proves that Shonna is a damn good singer. She's an adorable member of the Truckers.
Guess this song is about having various qualities, and sometimes being in situations (like relationships going ugly) that you don't have qualities to handle.
You're looking around without knowing what to do, because you've never been in such one situation before. Your house is empty, and you can't find the one(s) you want to hold on to for comfort. |

Okkervil River – Another Radio Song Lyrics

How can you not get addicted to the words and how they perform "there is no escaping the thing that is making its home on your radio"? And I absolutely adore the verses about the infection. It feels so real, like a cut through the palm that has gotten infected and is bothering you and your living.
This song is extremely good. So original. So Okkerwild River. |

I'm truly grateful that I've listened to such songs like this one. Songs that I'll never forget, songs that always will be possible to relate to, songs that never will fade because they are wrapped in such a warm and comforting hope.
"Make a scene, but don't lie on the bed laid out like you're dead, because honey, you're murdering me". How original and incredible. I wish I was that good in making so much out of so few words. |

R.E.M. – Undertow Lyrics

As an atheist, I think this song has some major points that really makes sense. For instance the focus on being conscious about independence ("I know what I wanted, I know how I wanted this to be"). And the focus on being independent shines through in the last verse, where the narrator is tired, but still he manages to push on through instead of being broken down. Why? Because he knows that he is where he's supposed to be, and he knows that he doesn't need religion. What's important isn't a fictive "god", but the creations inside of yourself.
The metaphor about breathing water makes me think about the way science explains our evolution, and evolution beats religion when it comes to how humans are created. We are, most likely, improved after small molecules in the water (hence the "breathing water" lyric). So, it's a song about knowing yourself and understanding what's around you. At least to me. |

R.E.M. – Binky The Doormat Lyrics
|
I always get a mental image of a party at a place with a pool, and the narrator is about to have sex with someone, just like everybody else who's at the party. The sex they're having is dirty and cold, but the narrator gives himself away even though he probably has a relationship ("distance is my tendency" - his lover isn't close to where the party is), and he might be cheating. "Bathroom friends" could be a reference to drugs, which makes his mind numb, and he cheats without considering the aftermaths, but he knows that this isn't good ("fuck with me and traumatize"). "Have you lost your place? I wore my doormat face" probably refers to the fact that he has woken up, hangover, and realise that he's screwed it up.
Either the narrator is the doormat, someone who's just been pushed over, or the girl he had sex with was a doormat, someone he just used with the same coldness that's included in all the sex that where going on. Afterwards he laid out his welcome doormat, as if he wants to say that he's sorry.
So you could say that it's about the dirty and bad sides of sexual relationships with no love. |

R.E.M. – Me In Honey Lyrics
|
I think this one could be just as much about a divorce as pregnancy. The narrator could be a husband, being left by his wife, and she takes the children with her, and he can't do anything but stand back and watch them leave him. It's possible that his wife just doesn't get him, or understand him, because he's different ("that's a part of me"). The wife can't go on with the pain and the relationship, because she's bored and their love is dead ("it's all the same, share the pain with me", "waste your time on me"). |

And Walkabout, no, Bill Berry isn't back, but the other Bill sure knows how to beat the drums. I think he has grown a lot as an additional member of the band. And this song sure proves how they're still on track. I've listened to it over 100 times, probably 120, and it still sounds good, and that's always a good thing. |

R.E.M. – Supernatural Superserious Lyrics

Well, my interpretation of the song is that it's about looking at the world and the people around you. Maybe it's because of personal goodness, that some people have lost their bravery because of problems they had in their youth and now they can't find solutions, so that you feel you must take a close look at how people around you live. It could be linked to the way the government is leaded, it could be about a family complex, or it could just be about the personal mind of one person, like an inner-voice admonishing about the persons abilities as a brick in a larger play. If you listen to the song with earphones, and watch the people around you, for example on the bus, it gives you this "straight-in-the-face" feeling that we all have our own history. Our lives are histories themselves, and they can be found good, bad, sad, sheltered or even embarrassed (maybe a macho guy doesn't want to be recognized as the guy who volunteered at a summer camp in his youth). This makes you resurrect the thoughts about yourself as a individual human being in a larger part. It's tough, challenging, sometimes embarrassing, often sad, but it's still a celebration of being held tight as the one you are. Everybody here has their own failed séances, whatever they might be. I guess. |
