Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's a song about the apocalypse, but in a happy light.

Like, reaching the epiphany that all your problems, struggles, and fears were insignificant and useless. It's not a sad thing, though. It's a relief. None of the problems that you had could ever compare to this, and with everything coming to an end anyway, they don't matter.

With nothing left to lose, your dog days are over. Things can't get worse than this. You're free. And as soon as you realize that, your happiness hits you like a train on the tracks, like a bullet in the back. While other people in the world around you scream, panic, and run to wait for the end in the company of those they care for, you can stand apart to watch them. It's kind of funny, but not in a mocking way. More of an endearing one.

Something like that.

...I don't know where people got being in love out of this, though.

Thrice – The Messenger Lyrics 16 years ago
Just a note, but egads, if you're going to type God, type God. Just because you don't believe in it doesn't mean that saying His name is a terrible or offensive thing to do. Some people don't believe in unicorns, either. Or Santa Claus. But no one ever hesitates to say 'unicorn' or 'Santa Claus'.
I know that Santa Claus and Unicorns are different from God, but the idea remains the same. It's only a word unless you choose to add, or believe it has real meaning behind it. :x

Thrice – The Messenger Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that the theme of Fire is a long-shot reference to the Seraphim, especially after Isaiah's vision of the Seraphim. A Seraph holds very close ties in symbolism with fire, and even the name Seraphim means the 'fiery ones'. But it most certainly makes the most references to Isaiah himself. The bit about the wooden saw refers to his execution. The theme of Fire also relates to a sort of aftermath of Isaiah's execution, where a traveler speaks to one of the men who had handled the saw that had killed Isaiah. As the two were speaking, the candle on the man's table had flickered, and as he reached towards the flame to keep it from extinguishing, his sleeve caught fire, and before he could douse himself in water, was consumed by the flames.

I think that "seeing a fire behind a heavy curtain" could mean seeing sure disaster hiding behind what looks to be safe for the moment, OR it could possibly mean seeing faith or potential to faith burning in the hearts of the people that he tries to send his message to, but it's hidden beneath a thick and heavy veil that they make for themselves out of fear. What they originally thought would protect them inevitably becomes their downfall. Also, curtains heavy enough block out the light entirely from windows. "I lean in closer and I close my eyes" could mean an acceptance that what they are doing will risk their life, but they hold a strong enough trust in their faith to be alright with that.

Thrice – Atlantic Lyrics 16 years ago
First, I just want to get this out of the way.

I think it's ridiculous that there are people who argue over whether Thrice's music is meant to be religious or not. Truly, it has spiritual undertones, but ultimately, it's left up to the listener how they want to interpret it. The lyrics never specifically mention God, but then, Christianity tells that the presence behind God is meant to be found in everything in life. Everything. Because everything is told in the Christian faith to be a creation of God, and hold His image within it.

If you argue over whether the music is religious or not, you completely ruin it. D:

Personally, what I got out of this song in particular is meeting a good friend in death after a long time left in between. The main character of the song had lost someone very close to them a long time ago, spending years agonizing over ways to discover if anything ever became of their soul. Every faint hint that might suggest at the person they lost trying to reach out at them, they try to take as a sign. This could lead to a lot of mixed messages and interpretations, hence, 'Tin cans and string for years', where if there really is a message at all, it's probably not being sent very clearly. The lost person meant a lot to the main character, to the point where they began to have dreams about this person meeting them again, or being alive and well.
When the main character dies, they find themselves meeting their old friend again, who spent all those years waiting for them. At first, they don't really believe it. They think that maybe it's just another dream that they're having. But they feel within them that everything is very real, and that they've finally been reunited with this person that they love. And together, they go in to whatever waits for them after death. (Possibly returning to Nature, or reincarnation with the lines "And behind your eyes, the sea. Oceans of Light envelop me.")
