I dunno, all along I thought the voice was of a much older man in his late 30s at least at a barnyard dance. Maybe the dance was a 20 year reunion? It's the lines "And Henry, you danced like a wooden Indian" and "And I am doing the best that I can" that sounded husbandly. I thought it was a nostalgic man reflecting on the drift between him and his wife. |

I should add, I think the language that's leaving is the enormous meaning one attaches to the words I love you in a relationship where you feel passionately about the person. And when you're at the butt of a relationship this meaning is ever-changing, from affection to vulnerability. The most important changes are when you're reaching your breaking point and "changes are shifting outside the words". |

When I look at the lyrics, it sounds like someone consoling someone who's losing/lost a loved one as they turn around and use the loved one as parts for their own gain, like a doctor consoling a mother about the loss of her son whose organs are going to be used.
And I thought the video proved me right, but the video seems to be more about a relationship that was slowly eating up both people involved beyond reparation. The girl may have had pieces taken away from her by the people trying to help her get through the relationship, while Thom's character was being an asshole and it was eating him alive. In the end all that's left of him is a broken heart.
However, I like Reactor's meaning better than any of these, as it covers everything in the least amount of words. |

Shit, I've got no idea what this song means. A four fingered fisherman must lead a miserably pointless life, eh? That's all I can get at, anyway... it's convincing yourself "it's alright" about a pointless situation you were upset over before.
You're in the backseat as opposed to the driver's because you're not in control.
It's coping through apathy.
