Devotchka – Til the End of Time Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about postponing-- almost procrastinating on -- dying. It's called "Til The End of Time" because neither person wants to die. It's a cheery song because there is a sense of control over one's own death.

"You can't live your life on your deathbed... let's not let it end this way"-- 'this way' being death.

"Like sweethearts carved on a headstone
Oh why even bother, it'll be here tomorrow
It's not worth it sleeping alone" -- don't bother dying, the grave will be here tomorrow, and it's better to sleep together than to sleep alone in your tomb.

"And look at you and me still here together...
And we've come such a long long way
Let's put it off for one more day"--
Why bother leaving the world we know now? We can die later.

I think the "words" mentioned in the first stanza are fears about dying, which the singer tries to mollify in the rest of the song.

Love this song... Holly Miranda has a voice which can only be described as hauntingly beautiful. It was a pleasure to hear her open for Tegan & Sara.

K's Choice – Virgin State Of Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is about a woman who was in a physical relationship and now regrets what she did, so she's reverting back to her "virgin state of mind." She wants to burn the mazes she grew and get out of the (probably abusive) relationship but she doesn't think she can. I agree with you strangersatellite, that she has probably resorted to cutting herself in order to deal with the pain.

Play – I Must Not Chase The Boys Lyrics 15 years ago
I think besides practicing restraint, it's also about playing hard to get - "I wanna be someone they don't want me to be"and "don't wanna be the little girl they kissin' goodnight" - because she's been too "easy" in the past. Men are taking advantage of her and thinking she's loose, so they'll walk all over her. She realizes she'll be more valued if she doesn't do whatever they want her to do.

Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way Lyrics 15 years ago
I imagined this as a person in a relationship with/wanting someone who has low self-esteem or complains all the time. The singer is telling the one he loves that life is what they make of it.... you can either bitch and moan and "call it another lonely day," or you can go the other way and make the best of it. The singer is trying to convince her/him of this but the object of his affections won't listen or "take it from me".
He doesn't understand why this person he is in love with won't open up or realize the great potential she/he has.

The Beatles – If I Fell Lyrics 15 years ago
Alice: The original is from a guy's perspective. His heart has been broken before by another woman, so he wants to make sure the new woman will love him "more than her" (ie, his ex).
In Across The Universe it is from a girl's perspective, so she wants to make sure the guy she is singing to will love her "more than her" (ie, more than his previous girlfriends).
Of course, articles are ambiguous and can be taken any way you want them, like in Deathsdoor's case.

The Fratellis – Look Out Sunshine! Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, I think it sounds very Beatles-esque.

I think this song is funny because it sounds very upbeat, but when you read the lyrics they seem somewhat hostile or condescending. I can't figure out if he's talking to a person or to himself, but I can imagine him talking to a [now] ex girlfriend "No one gets you anymore," or possibly a fellow band member (since he calls him/her "old boy") who he's pissed at for "telling me to leave." The 'Sunshine' part just comes across as really sarcastic.

If he's talking to himself, it sounds like he's angry at himself for working for the music biz- "steal money from your pockets"- or he's disappointed that he has a "sell-out show," and no one else understands his frustration...

Any other ideas?

Katy Perry – Ur So Gay Lyrics 16 years ago
I just had a second thought... Perhaps she means he's gay in that he's not interested in her [or any other woman...] I guess this narcissism would be more asexual than gay, but that'd take too long to say ;)
To JackPotato: I thought the guy from Clockwork Orange loved Beethoven?

Katy Perry – Ur So Gay Lyrics 16 years ago
Initially, I was offended. I hate it when people throw the word "gay" around as an adjective to say someone's stupid. However, after reading the lyrics a few times I figured Perry was using "gay" to mean homosexual, not stupid. Yes, it's insulting... to a degree. The title "Ur so gay" certainly sounds like it does in the commonplace slang use of the word [which I hate]. But I think the characteristics she uses are stereotypical, effeminate homosexual ones... Meaning she isn't misusing the word "gay" to mean stupid, but actually, well, gay. The entire thing isn't PC perfect, but I think she's attacking the poseur more than she's targeting anyone homosexual.

The Moldy Peaches – Reminders of Then Lyrics 16 years ago
This song didn't stand out much to me until now that I'm feeling really depressed. Got it off the Juno soundtrack. I initially thought it was a bittersweet trip of nostalgia. However, I could also see it as an unrequited love fantasy ("pretend," "my eyes are on the prize"). Hera means lady, but she was also a greek god who had jealous tendencies (again with the unrequited love). Nice song, not too cheery.
