jadedgypsy~ i think you are most deffinately right, it is greed not grief... i think we can all tell from jennys lyrics, her mother was quite a character (rabbit fur coat, a better son/daughter, and others) i would imagine she was greedy when jenny began to make money... but this song is also talking about the music business, which i can imagine, generates some very greedy people... peace~ |

| I disagree with jadedgypsy (although youre right, Jenny does have a knack for metaphors). Jenny Lewis was still making movies after 1991. She was in Foxfire in '96 and Pleasantville in '98. I believe she got with RK in late '99 although they had been friends before that. In '91 Jenny was 15 and i believe had just had huge success in The Wizard. Everyone has given explanations for bits and pieces of this song, and while it is pretty straight forward, I will give my full explanation. In the beginning she is saying that she would rather be alone because shed be free. She is pretty sure of that. But then she has found someone who she really cares about. Someone who she enjoys doing the simple things in life with (which in my opinion is true love, a relationship where you can be yourself, and where you can do absolutely nothing with the person and still have a good time...) BUT i digress... These next few lines i can really relate to. She says "i cant remember why i hated you, and cant remember why i still do" Often in relationships, we dont always fall in love with the person at first sight. We meet them, form opinions about them, (and in this case maybe Jenny didnt like him) and one day you could wake up and realize you cant live w/o the person. So it sounds like this may have happened to Jenny and she didnt like the guy and still has certain things she dislikes in him but she realizes he can make her Happy,oh so Happy. Now this verse is my favorite line in any song. She is talking about all the normal things that can cause you harm and how other people always warn you of these things. But the one thing no one ever tells you is how You can be your own worst enemy. Control is a crazy thing. There are people out there (i admit i am one of them) who cant stand to not have control of a situation. In love though, you cant have that attitude. Love is about losing control and letting yourself go. Jenny realizes that she has a hard time doing this. She says that she knows she can be happy with this person, she just has to let it happen ~Peace |

I totally agree with Skyballs. I really think this song is about substance use. She talks about always trying to find something to make her happy because shes "barely alive". I think being barely alive is something we can all relate to. Like when we just want to sit at home and not think about anything and we want everything to be perfect. And maybe Jenny just feels like this all the time. As for the metal rods part, skyballs was right on target as well. ~Peace |

There are so many effing comments on here... I feel bad for the people who just want a frickin meaning. Enough of this bipolar bull shit. You dont have to be bipolar or have night terrors to feel this way. NOW, in the beginning she has just woken up to realize that she is still living the same life as she was last night. Nothing has changed and things are still good sometimes and shitty at others. Then her mom calls her, insane and high, (which i really think Jennys mom has a drug problem because she mentions it in Rabbit Fur Coat as well) swearing it "different this time" Dont all adicts say that?? So jenny gets pissed cause shes already having a bad morning and says some mean things then hangs up on her mom. She goes back to sleep so she can dream of a time (possibly childhood) when everything was easy and she could love everything. Then she starts to sing about the ups and downs of like that EVERYONE experiences. Good times with friends and all that, but when things are bad it overshadows the good times, as it does with everyone. And yes the way jenny says fucking is amazing. Then she goes on to talk about how she will be ok because she is like everyone else and she can fake happiness. Sometimes we all have to so we can get thru the tough times. She mentions all the things she wishes she could be, one is a better daughter. Then the whole ship thing is her saying even though times are hard, she will make it through. I believe this is an inspirational song, not a depressing one. ~Peace |

i dont think theyre making fun of emo rock. I have 2 interpretations. One is that someone she cares about is struggling with something major (possibly an addiction) the other (and the one ive always thought when i listened to the song) is that she wrote it about herself. So my meaning is based on my assumption that she wrote it bout herself the first verse could be her standing back and realizing she was weaker than she thought she would be. Like maybe she gave into temptation. The chorus is something everyone can relate to... Places that bring out your emotions, such as your moms house. As for the next verse, obviously now she IS talking bout herself. Shes saying shes a "thoughtless beast", like maybe she got so consumed with whatever shes going thru, that she became selfish. ~Honestly this song seems to be about an addiction~ She says shes afraid of everything but then she says "But its how we choose to see IT: strength or human need" The it is strength. If a person is strong, are they really strong or do they just try to meet their needs and do it successfully W/O BEING DEPENDENT ON OTHER PEOPLE/SUBSTANCES. Chorus, again is about situations that make you feel emotional- hence the song title This verse was the main clue that lead me to believe this was written about an addiction. Youve lost your way home, like youre so involved with your addiction youve lost the things that were important to you. It feels familiar, maybe shes been there before. And you here them calling and it sounds familiar and they might help you out. Maybe she knows people care about her and want to help her BUT ITS SO HARD, yes addictions are hard. I know i wrote alot but this is a good song and should be given more credit than a joke... Peace~ |
