The National – Humiliation Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about being really drunk... he drinks because of the social anxiety--- "I'm the moron who dances I was teething on roses I was in guns and noses".. I mean clearly he's intoxicated--- the song is called humiliation because he is embarrassed about how he acts when he is drunk.

Death Cab for Cutie – Stable Song Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about Kerouac.
"Rows of deserted houses
All our stable mates highway bound" Refers to the lifestyle of the book on the road. The ability to simply enjoy the air in your lungs from the road.

But then his memory gets the better of him and he accepts it. hence the "I don't mind" part at the end. It's almost like a carelessness and acceptance that on one hand he knows that the lifestyle will have negative consequences but he accepts it anways.

Ryan Adams – Cracks in a Photograph Lyrics 12 years ago
If anything, this song is about committing suicide or its about taking a hit of a drug (ryan adams did speedballs). I think the suicide hypothesis makes sense though. Especially the paragraph about

I got a letter in my pocket and a pain in my tooth
And there's money in the bank up the street
I got a jacket that would fit you
And a couple of old guitars that I'd like for you to keep

If you run into my sister tell her "Elvis is cool
but the Rolling Stones will sweep her away"
And money's always worth it on a Monday night
Cause on Friday she should get it for free

it makes sense because the first paragraph he is talking about giving his shit away, like his guitars and his jacket which is typically pretty common with those who plan to commit suicide. The paragraph about his sister is phrased in a way that if somebody were to run into her, they could use that little piece of personal information. Anyways, thats my take on it

The National – Fake Empire Lyrics 13 years ago
To be honest, I think this song is about a guy and a friend(or possible girl). They feel that they are half awake in the fake empire since they are mixing drinks in their lemonade (Half awake being that they are inebriated of course). The fake empire is just people probably out and about in the bar scene or whatever setting. In any case it kind of makes sense (no thinking for a little awhile, let not try to figure out everything at once).

Death Cab for Cutie – Underneath the Sycamore Lyrics 13 years ago
Its a song that about two lovers(or even friends) and how they were both in alot of pain. They both find themselves in a desperate situation (both winding up under the overpass), but end up bonding because they realize they both have the same fears, hurts insecurities, etc. But then they both realize "we are the same, and both sane, underneath the sycamore". they both take refuge under the sycamore tree. Its interesting because it sorta reminds me of crooked teeth (it was one hundred degrees, as we sat beneath a willow tree"

Death Cab for Cutie – You Are a Tourist Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song... but I think this entire album is about Zooey. Its actually quite interesting how they've changed from a band that really sung about heartbreak and now he is embracing being in love with somebody. Times certainly change

Jim Croce – Bad, Bad Leroy Brown Lyrics 13 years ago
Its a badass song, but my question is, what the fuck is a treetop lover?

Cold War Kids – Skip the Charades Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it could either be that the relationship is in a rut, or that they broke up and one person is suffering while the other acts like nothing is wrong.

Cold War Kids – Bulldozer Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about a couple that builds a relationship on a really shaky foundation, but they inevitably hold each other closer in an effort to keep it going for as long as possible. Hence at the end, he sings
"Pull me closer, Hold me tightly
Precious metals now colliding
Look to you my carbon copy x2"

Where the relationship just collapses upon it self. I think in this case, both persons know that the relationship is doomed to fail yet they still stay in it

The Avett Brothers – Ten Thousand Words Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is really about any party or situation, where people talk about things they think they know about, but also sometimes use this what they know to point out others and put them down.

And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expense except their own

Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) Lyrics 13 years ago
This song just illustrates Domestic violence. Nobody ever wants to become a "wifebeater" but people develop maladaptive patterns and it just sort of happens over time. Scarily enough, domestic violence happens to every Socio economic status-- Powerful song

The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight Lyrics 13 years ago
This reminds of Explosions in the Sky because of the buildup-it starts off slowly, and as the character in the story becomes more intensified by the seeing this past relationship, and he becomes more drunk, its just this hi-fi crazy buildup-somewhat like a snowball effect

Ray LaMontagne – Old Before Your Time Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is really about realizing how prideful we are when we were younger. I think this song really talks about how it was for the character to grow up (I was raised up poor and I wanted more, and maybe, I'm a little too proud,
In lookin' back I see a kid who was just afraid,) and its basically a reflection on this persons life, and the people he met along the way, but some of them came in and out.

The National – Sorrow Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is pretty heartbreaking. I think its about a really emotional breakup, hence the "can't get over you", so he either resorts to drugs, or is put on drugs(hence the part about pills in my honey and milk).

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm a huge fan of angels and airwaves... these guys remind me of a more tight knit version of Angels and airwaves and not as cheesy.

Angels and Airwaves – Shove Lyrics 14 years ago
This is an awesome song... Its about falling in love and getting to know somebody and traveling to far lands. I love angels and airwaves because they just know how to make you feel optimistic adventurous in an uncertain future. Its about meeting new people and getting to know them, and loving/accepting them for who they are. Its freakin awesome

Green Day – 21 Guns Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song not only applies to war, but it also applies to this person's life. The part in the beginning "do you know whats worth fighting for, when its not worth dying for" is really just a parable for just everyday battles. Especially the part of swallowing his pride and what not. Somethings are just not worth fighting for because it doesnt really matter.

Death Cab for Cutie – Little Bribes Lyrics 15 years ago
Kinda interesting. The song was originally Casino Blues, but i guess he changed the song name when he released the ep. but yea its similiar to why you would want to live here

Death Cab for Cutie – My Mirror Speaks Lyrics 15 years ago
I think its like an homage to Kerouac. its ben's main influence. I agree with Jkjk13 as well. that its about somebody that sorta travels without strings attached and when he tries to settle down his soul sorta rebels lol.

Death Cab for Cutie – Lowell, MA Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about how Ben breaks up with a girl and so he leaves lowell, and thinks of lowell as this place where its just broken down(much like his relationship). Sorta a double metaphor going on. =P

Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 16 years ago
Basically a song about a girl who cant keep steady relationships. She just sort explodes, and does her own chaotic thing

"Soon everybody will ask what became of you.
Your heart was dying fast and you didn't know what to do"

Then eventually seh gets married, but becasue of her chaos she cant keep a steady relationship.

"The whispers that it won't last roll up and down the pews"

Death Cab for Cutie – Bixby Canyon Bridge Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is more or less ben follwing jack kerouac and finding that his presence is long gone and forgotten. Ben then realizes that he may suffer the same fate as jack did..."I want to know my fate if I keep up this way
It's hard to want to stay away" Since ben wants to follow in the footsteps of Jack Kerouac. Awesome song, and sorta reminds me of "We looked like Giants", in terms of having the awesome jam sessions at the end.

Death Cab for Cutie – Grapevine Fires Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah being in So Cal during the fires, this song depicts it so perfectly. I think this song is more for people that wernt able to go to work or school beacuse of the fires and despite the tradegies of others we still go on. I think this is evident with the girl in the cemetary. Cycle of life story i suppose.

But its interesting because Ben seemingly took a more story teller approach to the narrow stairs album, and most of the writing is in the 3rd person.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Sunlight Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with alanbwells. Its either how he grows up and sees the bad in the world but i think it can also be more about Just having a bad experience and how it changes your perception of what happens to you. But the tone is very decieving, in the same way that Thrash unreal is by Against Me. Very upbeat tone but dark lyrics. Loves it.

Death Cab for Cutie – Long Division Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is completely brilliant. Relating love issues to a math problem(Long division and having remainders). I think this song is honestly about the man cheating on the girl, and thats what creates the "long division " between them cuz the girl keeps trying to leave and the guy keeps dragging it out ("He has sworn not to be what he'd been before") like a long division problem(i remember spending hours doing those long division problems ha ha). Brilliant song

Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is kinda Ben is commenting on how people rush through breakups and that this person apparently just go rid of the bed because it was "too much space"

But regardless of my opinion is a great song, and for the most part great album. I already found all the songs online before the release date :)

Dude, i think that alot of times we search for meaning in music but i dont think this song really has any meaning. The lyrics dont link together... I mean in a way that carrys a coherent idea or theme anyways.

But this song is amazing, and so is the album its just so catchy ive been listening to this album on repeat all day its just sooooooo good

Death Cab for Cutie – Pictures in an Exhibition Lyrics 16 years ago

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
I dont know. Im a huge death cab for cutie fan. I think this song is pretty good. I'm not sure the 2 minute intro is really necessary for a such a simple song though. But in terms of its lyrical content, its good, it just really simple and very drawn out. But im hoping that this is just a lead in to the rest of the album, and theres some kind of bigger theme within the narrow stairs album.

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is self explanatory, but I think that as with most of Gibbards lyrics, there is much more than on the surface. I think this song is about entrapment, feeling trapped in a relationship, but not being able to let go, and possibly being afraid of being alone. I think this because the next song on the album(transatlanticism) is a song about longing for a person. Inevitably the song is really(and really the whole album) is about love being a contradiction, that we convince ourselves of being in love(even if we dont like the person were dating) and we get caught up in the moment and often times justify being with someone we are not happy with.

Sorry, kinda confusing,

Death Cab for Cutie – Why You'd Want to Live Here Lyrics 16 years ago
Myself having lived in Los Angeles for several years, can totally relate and understand to what Gibbard is saying. The song basically talks about how LA, and even the greater southern california area, is greatly shallow and fake.
The most obvious line that attests to this is "You can't swim in a town this shallow
You will most assuredly drown tomorrow"

Also he mentions themes of just getting lost(especially those who dont live in LA) in all of the "glamour" that LA has, "Here the names are what remain
Stars encapsulate the gold lane
And they need constant cleaning
For when the tourists begin salivating "

Its really just a song that just shows that LA is over rated and people get easily lost in glamour, and money.
