Deerhunter – Lake Somerset Lyrics | 13 years ago |
this song reminds me of david lynch's TV series "twin peaks" a little - the idea that the place where you grew up makes you who you are, and it can make you dangerous. i always believed this song was about being young and having these experiences, doing all these things you'll grow up to regret with all your friends in some creepy place in your hometown, and your life being shaped by those moments. |
Vampire Weekend – Giant Lyrics | 14 years ago |
if he says "robert smithson" which i think you're right about, that would make it "spiral jetty" instead of "cheddar." robert smithson is an artist who made this crazy thing called spiral jetty in the great salt lake in utah... http://factoidz.com/images/user/10754.gif and if that's true then the "ancient sea" line fits too. don't know what that has to do with baby cheese.... |
Vampire Weekend – Cousins Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the "dad was a risk-taker" stanza reminds me of how ezra has mentioned that most of the music writers who mock VW because of their alleged wealthy backgrounds are themselves from upper-middle-class families. the "greatest hits 2006 little list-maker" is probably a music journalist, who hears "codes in the melodies" and tries to glean things that might not even be there. |
Vampire Weekend – White Sky Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think that like m985916 suggested it has to do with the entrance to the plaza hotel in midtown manhattan. the girl in this song is named julia and she is standing between "a pair of mirrors that are facing one another." i know in some fancy hotels in manhattan (the plaza and also the parker meridien on 56th st) the entrances are these walkways with mirrors on both sides. if you've ever stood between two mirrors that face one another, there are basically infinite copies of your reflection - so, "a thousand little julias." the plaza is on 59th and 5th, which is in "the middle of manhattan." |
Vampire Weekend – California English Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"contra mundum" is a reference to evelyn waugh's "brideshead revisited" which is one of the greatest books ever. it means "against the world." i love that "baby please don't lose your faith in the good earth" line. |
Vampire Weekend – Holiday Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"she'd never seen the word bombs blown up to 96 point futura" |
Vampire Weekend – Diplomat's Son Lyrics | 14 years ago |
that's an M.I.A. sample! from "hussel," which is on her album kala... it's a great song too |
Vampire Weekend – Diplomat's Son Lyrics | 14 years ago |
some corrections: the chorus is "he was a diplomat's son it was '81" the first line of the second bridge is "cause i'm gonna take it from Simon" the last line is "there's a car all black with diplomatic plates" this is my favorite song on the record. i think it's a story about how a friendship ended. i love how nostalgic it sounds |
Vampire Weekend – White Sky Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i hate to be "that dork with the lyrics corrections" but here's what i think: first verse: an ancient business a model piece of glasswork down on the corner that you walk each day in passing the elderly sales clerk will eye us with suspicion the holy motor corporation giving its permission last verse: sit on the park wall ask all the right questions while the horses race the taxis in the winter look up at the buildings imagine who might live there imagining your wolfords in a ball upon the sink there richard serra is a modern sculptor who makes all these iron arcs and stuff; i guess they do look kind of like a skate park. i saw one of his installations at the museum of modern art ("the house that modern art built") about two or three years ago. wolfords are a brand of tights. i mean, he could have just said "imagining we're living together" or something, but instead he imagines her tights in the sink. SO. GREAT. |
Ra Ra Riot – A Manner To Act Lyrics | 15 years ago |
little corrections: "a manner to act like a heart attack" "the subway's only seven blocks away and it'll be there soon..." "keep on looking down at the paper with hope addressed..." ?? "i got two stitches in my eye" |
Grizzly Bear – Foreground Lyrics | 15 years ago |
incredible incredible incredible |
Grizzly Bear – Dory Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it sounded to me like "i want a lawyer" but that absolutely cannot be it |
Grizzly Bear – While You Wait for the Others Lyrics | 15 years ago |
album version is MASSIVE especially "and all we want want want..." |
Ra Ra Riot – Too Too Too Fast Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think it's "too too too fast, too too too fast, baby don't you think that you are going too fast, etc." |
Ra Ra Riot – Dying Is Fine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song has got a lot of words from an e.e. cummings poem: "dying is fine)but death" ie. the title obviously, also "o baby i wouldn't like death if death were good" and "forgive us oh life the sin of death." i do really think that both the song and the poem have that truly obvious meaning, dying is a natural part of life, and it's fine. |
Ra Ra Riot – Winter '05 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i love that double meaning, "every morning i wake beside myself." you could be 'beside yourself' with emotion ie. sadness. it seems to be about though how he used to wake up beside someone else, but now he's alone. |
Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Lyrics | 15 years ago |
ezra said this: "Joanna was stealing a ring off His Honor's finger at an unnamed NYC hospital. Having been to Sloan-Kettering earlier in life, she was unperturbed by the hospital-vibes (which are very distressing for some people)." |
Vampire Weekend – Ottoman Lyrics | 15 years ago |
here's what i get: ottoman couch, how handsome your furniture love you now but dressed for a funeral begging you to sit for a portrait on the wall to hang in the dark of some parliamentary hall elegant clothes, you want to be seen with her under your tweeds you sweat like a teenager begging you to sit for a portrait on the wall to hang in the dark of some parliamentary hall today's for you they laid it out for you there will be six bells a-ringing and white women singing for you, but this feels so unnatural to peter gabriel too all of the cards and all of the time it took soon it's all lines of red in a leather book begging you to wait for a minute by the door your creeping feet where they've never been before today's for you they laid it out for you there will be six bells a-ringing and white women singing for you but this feels so unnatural to peter gabriel too how great is that line, 'you sweat like a teenager' !!?? i think this is about the same thing as c.c.k.k. she's rich and he's not and he feels intimidated by this fact, and it dooms their relationship. |
Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i always saw this song as not meaning much or anything at all. i think 'his honor' is meant to be taken sarcastically - like the narrator hates this guy but refers to him with an illustrious title to be ironic. and i always thought the thing in the young men's wing at sloan kettering was something sexual rather than death, but that might just be me. |
Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
thelightsblur, i would think that too but this song is on the ep, which was recorded before his death, and he plays drums on the ep version of this song. |
Ra Ra Riot – St. Peter's Day Festival Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is the most heartbreakingly beautiful song in the world. gloucester is a town in massachusetts, they have a yearly st. peter's day festival there. also in gloucester there's a bar called the rhumb line. i love "when i arrive, will you wake if i open the door" |
Vampire Weekend – Campus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
xocouturecouture: kefir is that drink that's halfway between yogurt and milk. a keffiyah is that middle-eastern big checkered scarf that people fold in half and tie around their necks in a triangle. incidentally, i agree this song is about boning your professor. it is still my favorite on the album |
Spoon – Idiot Driver Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"the highway is your girlfriend and it goes by quick" = modern lovers nod? (roadrunner) this song is a lot like car radio i think. except car radio is more hopeful. |
Vampire Weekend – Arrows Lyrics | 16 years ago |
two corrections: "your leather suitcase burst at the seams" "oh it's no use at all" this song is amazing and i don't know why they didn't put it on the album. i think "you'd gone out hunting" means that she was seeing other people... while he was asleep in her bedroom. OUCH. |
Spoon – Car Radio Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this song reminds me of roadrunner (by the modern lovers) same general idea except with new york instead of massachusetts. he's a kid, in a car, driving, with the radio on, everything is wonderful. |
Vampire Weekend – The Kids Don't Stand a Chance Lyrics | 16 years ago |
imperialism. "from france" "ignoring all the history" "pure egyptian cotton" "still you must advance" ap european history, thank you |
Vampire Weekend – The Kids Don't Stand a Chance Lyrics | 16 years ago |
imperialism. "from france" "ignoring all the history" "pure egyptian cotton" "still you must advance" ap european history, thank you |
Born Ruffians – Merry Little Fancy Things Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the last thirty seconds of this song are unbelievable. "kill me now because i ain't got a pretty face" = gold |
Born Ruffians – This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
some juice. no. coffee. i think the first time i heard this song i cried with joy when he says, "i need to get laid immediately." it's like clap your hands say yeah with the yelp, i get it. awesome. |
Architecture in Helsinki – Red Turned White Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"you got me climbing through hoops, on your roof, to a death song." = GOLD |
Foals – Mathletics Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yeah it's "cosine wave sine wave" like the function. makes sense because the song's called mathletics. |
Foals – Cassius Lyrics | 16 years ago |
it's not here, but the part about "cassius you're second best" is really reminiscent of shakespeare's julius caesar, lqtm. but i certainly have to agree with you kele, especially due to the "lighthouse was an accident" part... |
Vampire Weekend – One (Blake's Got a New Face) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
jackie, i totally agree. both the harmony on that line and what it means just KILLS ME every time. english breakfast and darjeeling are both teas! i just learned that today. which kind of adds to the image of this song of prep school kids just laying about in old San Juan (puerto rico). and only the narrator really understands that despite their privilege they are just doomed to be "dowdy in sweatshirts" which is to them the epitome of "absolute horror." |
Vampire Weekend – Campus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
KEFIR on your keffiyah! this song is fantastic. i love how upbeat it is, even though he "never wants to see you again." |
Vampire Weekend – Walcott Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this song live is UNBELIEVABLE. they played it last when i saw them last night. it was the most intense, amazing thing. |
Spoon – Eddie's Ragga Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the first verse is GENIUS. i love this song and i really really really wish they'd played it when i saw them. |
Spoon – I Turn My Camera On Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this is the sexiest song ever written, even though the lyrics are so depressing, ie. "you made me untouchable for life." i feel so bad finding this song so sexy when it has lyrics like "you made me untouchable for life." and i absolutely l o v e "i saw the stars go off at night." that's gorgeous. i just love that line so dearly. |
Vampire Weekend – Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa Lyrics | 16 years ago |
it is definitely about banging but is the most intelligent song about banging that i have ever heard. |
Vampire Weekend – Bryn Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think it's ion displacement won't work in the basement |
M.I.A. – Bamboo Banga Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the first little bit is a modern lovers song, "roadrunner" |
MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think this song is just about being in a band and having all these aspirations to be famous and marry models and shoot heroin... but yet that rarely ever happens. |
We Are Scientists – The Bomb Inside The Bomb Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"russian doll skin, it's fucking deadly" love that |
Architecture in Helsinki – Scissor Paper Rock Lyrics | 16 years ago |
if you're ANGRY about the fact that it's RED i'll SURRENDER i'll change it to WHITE did anyone else get that? the incredible genius in that line? |
Architecture in Helsinki – Same Old Innocence Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this was the second or third song i heard them play the first time i saw aih live and it was the clincher i think, as now i basically listen to nothing but them , and this song especially . |
