Well first off, I want to say that I love this song, and that I think it's very profound. (Or at least it is to me.) I think this song expresses the point of view of a very shy person, possibly the author themself. Everybody says that their looking for a shelter, Got a lot to give but I don't know how to help her, I should just let it go till they learn how to grow, And how to liberate. Everybody says that she's looking for a shelter, Got a lot to give but I don't know how I felt her, They should just let it go till these cities learn to grow, And how to liberate These two verses pretty much say the same thing, that someone's looking for some kind of shelter, probably shelter in another person, maybe a lover of a friend. I think it's sung from the point of view of an onlooker - another person. They want to "help" this person from their silence/shyness - so to speak, but they don't know how to. Then they conclude that they should just let them be and let them grow into a more social and more outgoing person on their own accord - as if that is the ideal state of being. Maybe this person pities the object of description? Silence is easy, it just becomes me, You don't even know me, all lie about me. Now, I think this part is the shy person speaking. They say that being silent is easy, because they don't have to do anything; they don't have to risk anything by being silent. But then that silence "becomes" the person in the point of view of other people. They're always silent. They have nothing to say. They're quite boring. That silence becomes all the person is (from the point of view of other people). The shy person then says that those other people don't even know them, and that they [other people] just make up things about them instead. Everybody says that I'm looking for a home now, Looking for a boy or I'm looking for a girl now, I can still let it go, I can still learn to grow, Into a child again. This reiterates the first two stanzas. That they're looking for some form of shelter. The second line possibly alludes to looking for love in a man or a woman, or possibly the desire for children (settling down?). Maybe they think that finding love and settling down will change who they are? They then tell themselves that they can just let the shyness go and grow as a person, like they're trying to convince themselves. Silence is easy, it just becomes me, You don't even know me, why lie about me. Silence is easy, it just becomes me, You don't even know me, why do you hate me. This is the chorus again. I think the whole point of contention is centered here. Silence is easy for them, and that in being silent all the time, they become the silence in the eyes of other people. They say that those other people don't know them at all, and ask why they [other people] hate them, and/or lie about them. I know that was long, but I wanted collect my thoughts on this song and put them out there. :) Brilliant song. |

| I thought the meaning of this song was quite obvious really. I think it's about wanting to be someone's personal Jesus. What do people (who believe in concept and existence of Jesus) get out of believing so? Comfort, peace, someone/thing to confide in, a friend when you have nobody else? That's what this person wants to be for someone else. "Reach out and touch faith", to me, is the author imploring someone to reach out to them and accept them as their personal Jesus. | |

You know, it's somewhat disappointing that so few people have even considered that this song might actually be satirical. Knowing the Black Eyed Peas, and the fact that "They Don't Want Music" and "Gone Going" is on the same CD, I don't think it's that much of a stretch of the imagination to think that it could be a parody of sorts. That being said, I love this song to bits. The ludicrous nature of the lyrics always cheers me up, and gives me a laugh. It's catchy too. |

I see it as a diatribe of sorts on the (usually young) people who are rambunctious, puerile, and always starting fights. Those who strut around like they own everything and act like everyone is their inferior. "Buddy you're a boy make a big noise Playing in the street gonna be a big man some day You got mud on yo' face You big disgrace Kicking your can all over the place" --- They think they're "it" (so to speak), but really all it is is noise, and they really have very little (the can). "Buddy you're a young man hard man Shouting in the street gonna take on the world some day You got blood on yo' face You big disgrace Waving your banner all over the place" --- Reiterates what the first verse has said. "Buddy you're an old man poor man Pleading with your eyes gonna make you some peace some day" --- I think this possibly shows how they're older now and they haven't accomplished much, nor do they have much. They possibly secretly want to settle down, but they can't or don't know how to, so they keep doing what they do. I think this song's generally saying that they're sick of this sort of behavior. Well, that's my take on it anyway. |

I wholeheartedly agree with CrippledClimber. I definitely feel the same way. I think it's because of that, that while reading the lyrics to this song, the meaning just clicked with me. So I cry sometimes when I'm lying in my bed To get it all out what's in my head Then I start feeling a little peculiar So I wake in the morning and I step outside I take a deep breath then I get real high Then I scream from the top of my lungs What's goin' on I think that's the key to the song's meaning. She's frustrated and losing her grip on her life. She's sick of the state of her life, and wants to change. |

I love how it starts off with the chorus, and how it uses the past tense "But my name was Eliza Day". It made me think the first time around, why "was"? It became clear soon enough... =\ I love thing song. I think it's absolutely hauntingly beautiful. It really paints a bewitchingly vivid scene. I also like how it seems like a run-of-the-mill love ballad, but every now and then, something makes you feel as if something's not quite right. Until the end comes and you find out why. Hauntingly beautiful. |

It's astounding the number of people who feel the need to come onto a thread about a specific song, and slag off a totally different band.. Just sayin'. But yeah. This song is amazing. The beginning is my favorite part. It's so powerful and captivating. I think it's about not grabbing opportunities when they sat plainly in front of you because you're bound up with reservations and fears. And you know you should have seized it, and that destiny isn't a good substitute for life. But now you're kicking yourself for not acting when you should have, when you could have. I think it's about her having a devastating and comforting dream where she's with someone she's lost, coupled with how she generally feels about it. And upon waking it feels just like when she lost them initially. | At the moment, all I've worked out of the lyrics is that she fell in love once, had to leave them, and she longs to be with them. But as cryptic as the lyrics are, the way she sings is just so sad - it makes uneasy, but in a pleasurable way. I think if you pull back from the lyrics a bit, and feel her voice and the melody, you absorb the sentiment of this song more. That's what I think anyway. | |

I think she wants to know what she wants. She seems lost, and pulls away from relationships with people to avoid hurting them. And she knows she needs to sort herself out first, to come to an understanding with herself, before she can move on and let other people in. She knows only she can help herself, but she doesn't know how to, and just hopes that she'll get there one day. She's desperately lonely, but she knows she can't open up to other people without opening up to herself first. I really like this song. |

Maybe a child was brought along hunting, and the child was thinking about the wolves/foxes/dogs (pack animals). The adult shot one of them, and the child knew something's wrong but didn't fully understand what happened. All it knew was that the snow turned as red as strawberries. That's likely not what the author meant, but that's how I like to think of it. |
