Genesis – Dancing With The Moonlit Knight Lyrics
| 2 months ago

Shortly after buying this album I learned about Green Shield stamps. Approx. 30 years later, it only occurred to me that Gabriel wanted an excuse to put "stamp" after "Green Shield", so he did so by making it a verb. That syntactical trickery is probably why it took 30 years. |

Weird Al Yankovic – It's All About The Pentiums Lyrics

Al sounds like a poser here: I mean, a C64? That's setting the bar pretty low, even in 1999. So you don't read spam? That's a talent shared w/99% of its recipients (it was the 1% that kept spammers going), and the best one is "my media is write-protected"? I don't know where to begin with how lame a boast that is.
In fact, I think Al was *trying* to sound like a poser. |

@[PHR:43296] 'Would love to be wrong. I might get my wish. I can't remember why I was so sure this was the correct interpretation. It may have been from the bio by Maynard Collins, but I can't find such a thing looking a the index. And Collins seemed to get a few other things wrong, too. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Blackberry Wine Lyrics

I sort of feel like it's drugs, but that seems a bit out-of-place for in 1982. I just can't think of a better reason for all this fuss being made over a folk wine. |

Gowan – (You're A) Strange Animal Lyrics
|
Looking at the video, I think the only safe interpretation is that it's about the human condition and an acknowledgement that humans are members of the animal kingdom. What's less safe is that the bone is a homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. |

L7 – Pretend We're Dead Lyrics

I seem to be the only one who thinks this song is political. Think about when they recorded this. Liberals had been hogging the mic for a long time and around then was when the tide was turning against them. Well, L7 was as hard to the left as they come, so I think in their frustration, they rationalized the phenomenon as their fellow liberals pretending they were dead rather than standing up and being counted. |

Ghostkeeper – haunted Lyrics

Fascinating video. Is there supposed to be any depth to it, or is it just about a tween being stalked by ghosts and somehow a crush is worked into it (who also seems to be a ghost)? |

@[naivada:723] I think there's less of a space between God and Sting (at least in '83) than there is between this track and Dear God |

Bobby McFerrin – Don't Worry, Be Happy Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
Uh, for the last 3 decades or so I've lived under the assumption that the message in this song wasn't to be taken seriously or wasn't to be taken at face value. Was that wrong??? Is McF really trying to tell us that life's problems can be solved by just snapping your fingers and being happy??! Considering how he came to his end, it seems that Robin Williams presence in the video speaks to the emptiness of all that! |

How do you find out more about this... guy? Group? There doesn't seem to be any bio that I can find |

Gordon Lightfoot – Wherefore And Why Lyrics

I didn't see God in it. But since 2 others do, I'm curious to hear how. Other than the mention of wind and the entire-universe-at-once perspective, I don't see how the God interpretation fits. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Triangle Lyrics

Clearly about the Bermuda Triangle, but it sounds like it's set in the middle ages, which I think is centuries before it became a phenomenon. I guess Gord didn't let the facts get in the way of a good poem |

Gordon Lightfoot – Pride of Man Lyrics

Insightful. Thing is, most people claim civilization is transitory, but the west doesn't think it applies to us. Previous civilizations understood that these things are cyclical. Our arrogance will be corrected some day |

Gordon Lightfoot – Protocol Lyrics

Seems a very pointed challenge at causes people applied themselves to and asks "what's the point?" I wonder if Gord knew about Milgram's experiments on obedience at the time. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Nous Vivons Ensemble Lyrics

This is about Canada's "two solitudes": the divide between English and French Canada. It was intended as a hands-across-the-water, but I think Gord feels he tried too hard and failed in this endeavour. |

Gordon Lightfoot – My Pony Won't Go Lyrics

Whenever I listen to this song, I imagine that what won't go is his Pinto, because it blew up, and maybe fearing a lawsuit from Ford, he decided to name it after another car. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Let It Ride Lyrics

For the last 25 years I've been dying to know what that anti-climactic story about a guy sleeping in Detroit was all about. Now that I'm old enough to know that a "stash" can be drugs, I'm wondering if it's about a mule turning over a new leaf or something. |

Gordon Lightfoot – For Lovin' Me Lyrics

Is it this track or I'm Not Sayin' that Gord disowns and calls "sexist as hell"? It's definitely one of them, and if he says it about one then it would seem to fit the other as well. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Ghosts Of Cape Horn Lyrics
| 10 years ago
|
Cape Horn could well be the most terrifying place sailors could be and before the Panama canal was built, any ship that was in a hurry to get to or from Asia would have to round it. Because of the funnelling-effect of South America and the Antarctic, a lot of weather passes through there and has sunk a lot of tonnage. |

Very inspiring, catchy tune, way too short and especially meaningful right now, working a job I hate for a probationary salary (2.5 years on) and taking orders from the Lord High Executioner! |

Gordon Lightfoot – Baby Step Back Lyrics

Definitely a lot of bellicosity about a woman, but it's not obvious that she cheated on him--just that he feels she mistreated him. The opening verse suggests that he's moved back where he was living before he moved in w/her. |

Close. His *impending* divorce. His first two solo albums which followed over the next two years really go into that. I think this song is the first artistic expression of the problems his marriage was having. |

Genesis – Throwing It All Away Lyrics

If genfan's comments hadn't been so intemperate and mean-spirited they would have been very constructive. Nowhere in your posts that haven't been deleted did you talk about a double-meaning. Your mantra was a steady "this song *is* about atheism. This whole album *is* about atheism." All this double-meaning talk is a reinterpretation of your reinterpretation. |

Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy Lyrics

Well, it depends on what you mean by "bigoted". According to the politically correct thought police: bigoted several times over. But when someone talks trash at groups that said police force does not favour, suddenly the goal posts for bigotry have moved. Now if you truly believe in the *ideals* of the universality of niceness, then good for you. But the ease at which you presume the finer points of my views, when all I indicated is that they were unfashionable, doesn't give me confidence. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Sundown Lyrics

|
Yeah, well the thing about songFACTS.com is that it's a misnomer--there's lots of misleading twaddle on there.
In any case, this is probably right, but nevertheless, Gord sings about what he knows and he was having a lot of woman troubles around then, about just the sort he's singing. |

Gordon Lightfoot – Ordinary Man Lyrics

That part about the "show" indicates that it's about his life as an entertainer. And the "ordinary man" seems to be what most would be inclined to think Gord *isn't* |

Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy Lyrics

This song has deep personal meaning to me. My story isn't exactly the same as the main character's though. What happened was I let it slip that I had some very unfashionable politics regarding homosexuality and a bunch of progressive thugs ganged up on me, compared me to a Nazi, etc. |

Stray Cats – Stray Cat Strut Lyrics

I think your onto something, interpreting it as a metaphor. I can't believe that they bothered to dedicate a classic to a stray tom cat. I don't think I can agree it's about prostitution though. Too many lyrics derail that theme. |

Yeah, Summers wrote a particularly maternally brutal piece, didn't he?
But one can be forgiven for thinking it's about abortion. Nearly all the lyrics fit quite neatly into that interpretation. |
