Sinead O'Connor – I Am Stretched on Your Grave Lyrics 12 years ago
It's about a man mourning for his dead love. The first few verses are self-explanatory - he is sat by (or lying on) her grave, crazed by his grief and wishing he were dead too so they could be reunited ("it's time we were together, for I smell of the earth).

The third verse is him remembering a night that they spent together where he is grateful that they "did what was right" - not having sex before they were married. He goes on to say "your maidenhead still is you pillar of light" so she still has her honour because she's a virgin. I personally don't have a problem with premarital sex but this song is based on a much older Irish poem that was later translated into English and obviously in those days, it was considered sacriledge.

He then goes on to talk about how the priests and friars "approach me in dread" although in other versions of the song they are angry with him. It's all for the same reason though - he is taking too long to mourn and him wishing he was dead is wrong/goes against God because in those days suicide was also considered sinful (ergo, the big "Oh, that this too too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into a dew. Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd His canon 'gainst self slaughter..." in Hamlet).

And then the rest is, again, pretty self explantory.

Alexisonfire – Dog's Blood Lyrics 13 years ago
George said, before they released OC/YC, that he thought it was their best album yet.

I'm a massive fan of Alexisonfire. I've been listening to them for about seven years now, and I've seen them a fair few times. No matter what album, single or EP, there's a certain kind of magic about Alexisonfire that has always set them apart from the masses of other bands in similar genres. I'm proud to be an AOF fan; I'm not one of those people who moaned about George's "singing" how radio-friendly or mainstream they've become - who cares, as long as they still make good music?

The thing is, it wasn't good music. I respect that the band can't keep putting out the same albums forever - it's important and necessary for bands to evolve and change, but as much as I love Alexisonfire, I cannot fathom how they thought Old Crows/Young Cardinals was a good album, nevermind their best. Some of the old elements were there, particularly in songs like Midnight Regulations and Young Cardinals - those epic, rousing choruses so typical of Alexis, the sense of oppression and desperation coupled with the energy and unbreakable spirit of the masses Alexisonfire seem so good at channeling. However, these were the few gems in what was, sadly, an album almost completely devoid of the magic we'd come to expect. A band of that caliber should have been able to put out a much better album after we had to wait three years for it, surely?

I thought, when I first heard OC/YC, that maybe that was it for the band. We'd had a good run, and I'd always adore the first three albums with my entire heart, but their time was over. However, I had the pleasure of seeing them live three and a half times after June 2009 (the Olympics disaster doesn't count) and they still had it: the magic was not dead! I think that they realized on touring that people still loved the old stuff much more than the new stuff, (when I saw them in Seattle, more than half the setlist was orginally meant to be OC/YC, but they ended up playing more stuff from Watch Out! and Crisis at the crowd's request). Maybe this EP is their way of appeasing us like they did that crowd.

At any rate, I feel hopeful. Dog's Blood shows us that, even if it is relegated to an EP, the magic of the Alexisonfire we all know and love is still there

Dan Mangan – The Indie Queens Are Waiting Lyrics 13 years ago
It is indeed about the indie scene in Vancouver.

For such a diverse city, it's actually shocking how everyone seems to be a clone of one another. You don't even need to be anywhere near downtown to see that everyone shops exclusively at Urban Outfitters and American Apparel with vintage wayfarers, oxfords and a cup of coffee from a local haunt completing the ensemble.

It's a very exclusive scene, with everyone striving for originality, pre-sale tickets to Hot Hot Heat/the Arcade Fire, and the biggest, most diverse record collection, which is what Dan Mangan is referencing in this song. I think it every day, but it's nice for someone to finally actually address it directly as the pathetic and hollow pretence it is.

Alexisonfire – Midnight Regulations Lyrics 14 years ago
Ludichrisspeed, reading your comments and then reading my own again, I agree with you completely and that's pretty much what I was thinking, I just wrote it all down wrong. My comment sounds like I think the song's about the poorest of the poor. However, I always think it's about the same kind of people Boiled Frogs is about.

These people aren't below the poverty line, they're not going hungry or living in squalor. They have nice homes and cars and go on holiday every year to someplace warm. But the people they work for have backed them into a corner and now they've no freedom.

That's what I meant to say.

Alexisonfire – Young Cardinals Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with the new album being weak, there's maybe two songs that I like for certain, this being one and Midnight Regulations being the other. I'd prefer more Dallas for sure, but I don't think George's new vocal styles are that bad. Sure it's a lot less dynamic than his usual screaming, but I think this album is more about 'power to the people' if you will, rather than addressing more personal issues like previous albums. Definitely, Crisis subjects included more widespread problems like the blizzard of '77 and societal issues (see Crisis and This Could Be Anywhere In the World) but most of Alexisonfire's previous material was on, like I said, personal issues, and Old Crows/Young Cardinals is somewhat of a departure from that. The new album has a very different perspective than the previous albums, and the band look with more worldly, wizened eyes at problems that plague more than just themselves and their hometown (i.e. America being bastards, the struggle of the working class, religion). I think that George's new style is representative of this - on the old albums he was screaming as a tortured soul tormented by his own problems, on Old Crows/Young Cardinals he is 'gargling' as a member of society, a faceless entity in a sea of like-minded citizens. On the new album, rather than being the afflicted individual, he is the oppressed mob.

They really hate Hamilton, don't they? Listen to This Could Be Anywhere and Mailbox Arson if you don't believe me.

Alexisonfire – Midnight Regulations Lyrics 15 years ago
The best song on the new album, without a doubt.
It's about the working class, and how much of a struggle they've got on their hands these days what with evil corporations and businesses taking all their money and hope and freedom. They are beaten down to a life of drudgery and hopelessness, forever stuck in a cycle of poverty and dead ends.
And Alexisonfire are telling them to revolt, to bring about revolution and change to the way the world works in terms of the poor man.

Alexisonfire – The Northern Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about religion.
I think they're kind of mocking going to heaven and all that, because although they sound pretty sincere in the song, if you listen to My God Is a Reasonable Man and City and Colour's I Don't Need To Know, you'd know that they have very cynical and atheist views towards Christianity.

Strong contender for best AOF song yet.
I've already listened to it more times on iTunes than I have for any other song of theirs, including my personal favourites Mailbox Arson and No Transitory.

Kings of Leon – Closer Lyrics 15 years ago
Why the hell would KOL write a song about Twilight? I'm a teenage girl, I've read the series, and whilst I understand why some people would find connections between the song and the books, I enjoyed Closer on a much deeper level after I listened to it just once, than I will ever enjoy the (at best) mediocre Twilight series. I just cannot put the two together, it seems to me to be an insult to the song to even associate the two.

Alexisonfire – Mailbox Arson Lyrics 15 years ago
I think there's an underlying current of hatred for their hometown that runs all the way through Crisis. I mean, besides this song which is obviously about getting revenge on a place that's held you down or fucked you around or whatever by setting mailboxes alight, there's This Could Be Anywhere and We are the Sound AND We are the End. All three of those songs talk about being outcasts or about the general shittiness of the townsfolk ("Look around, there's no affection, only infection", "We are the sound, we don't belong").

It's not based on an essay that looks into the minds of psychotic killers at all! It's based on James Secord's essay, which, like Chuck Norris Zombie said, is about getting stuck in a routine. It's actually a really great essay.

The White Stripes – Jolene (Dolly Parton cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is my favourite song ever. This version.
Dolly wrote a good song, but Jack White sings it the way it should be sung. He makes it sound dark and desperate like it's coming from this deep, dark place inside and appealling, begging to the better side of human nature.

Jeez, if these are the correct lyrics I was way off.
I thought that it was 'a mess' too, and that 'I never hear that perfect sound' was 'Of what I've done, I am not proud' and also that 'Infatuation never ends up right' was 'Infatuation never ends, or pride' as in pride never ends either.
Dunno.

I think he's lost something. Maybe he's lonely.
He's going to find peace of mind, he's going to find someone to love, he's setting out to replace what has been taken from him, but all the things in the world, in life, cannot substitute.
I relate to this in ways I can't put into words.

I always thought this was about Christ. I'm not religious or anything but it just seems to fit eg. just sitting there revealing his life, being passive even to those who mean him harm, and the bit about his words being liferafts.
Maybe, I dunno. Just seems to fit.
Wonderful song at any rate.

I think Julielovesmusic is right.

Alexisonfire – Side Walk When She Walks Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about rape/paedophilia, which are both against the law (sins) and he knows they're wrong but he can't help himself.
Then he says about not bothering, as in don't bother to fight?
And then 'there was always warmth between us' seems like he is deluding himself that he's not that much to blame, that the victim and he shared a special bond and it was alright for him to violate them because of this.

This song, to me, is about having been in a relationship where someone hurt you and it ended, and it took you ages to let go but you finally did and now the person who hurt who is still trying to hurt you or realises they're still into you but you're just like 'you've gotta let go. I'm moved on. I've forgiven you and I wish you all the best but you have got to forget about us now.'

Regina Spektor – Somedays Lyrics 16 years ago
This song always reminds me of the relationship I had with my dad. I don't see him anymore, and for the first few days after I stopped seeing him, I just kept to myself and nothing seemed that real, and I just thought about him a lot. The line 'They come and leave you behind someone elses face' seems to mirror those few days.
The bit where it says 'They're so much stronger than the friends you try to keep' is saying the days are so much more powerful at dragging you down and making you sad than your friends are at trying to cheer you up, which was very true.
The chorus is like not having any contact with him.
And the my parents had me at a very young age and weren't married, which is why the 'I'm in love with your daughter' bit comes in.

Probably has nothing to do with the actual meaning of the song, but that's just what it makes me think of.
