Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics 16 years ago
I think its partly about her growing up and realising that the world isn't so great or perfect. And now she's going "in search of a midwife" to let her be born again and go back to childhood with Emily.

Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the inflammatory writ being the representation of the sudden rush of creative inspiration. A 'Writ' is also a word for a law, and I think when she talks about the "last great American novels" as being an "unlawful lot", she is saying that they lack any 'writ' - or creative inspiration.

Joanna Newsom – Cosmia Lyrics 16 years ago
I just wanted to say that at the start when she describes the moths surrounding her in the corn field and almost drowning her, I think she's talking about how she's drowning in memories of her friend because she calls her friend Cosmia later in the song and Cosmia is the name for a moth.

Joanna Newsom – Three Little Babes Lyrics 16 years ago
A "winding sheet" is the sheet you wrap a dead person's body in. This song is so sad, but I think it's about the mother understanding her children's deaths. I think it shows how she never will get over it because her tears become wedded to the winding sheet which I think sortof shows how she'll always have a connection with them through her grief.

Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the abortion idea, and I think when she says "shall we break some bread?" she's perhaps parodying the fact that many religions are against abortions.
