to me this song is perhaps more innocent then others seem to imply. im not exactly sure why but songs like kings crossing and distorted reality to me hold more weight and meaning. The druggy lyrics seem more straight forward and the mood is very passive/calm compared to much of his other work, usually filled with elegant metaphors and imagery carrying many interpretations. and i feel like simplicity was his intention. he really wanted to write a truly psychadelic song a la the beatles (im only sleeping, long long long etc.) except darker of course, meant to be a simple "twisted lullaby" as tambam said. |

"wellwhiskey" i think you described it perfectly. At its core it is a song about his search for true love. Like "javsav" I think that people seem to get overly defensive when people say Elliott's lyrics are about drugs. ("High times is an amazingly powerful song") To say he wrote about drug addiction in no way undermines his lyrical ability. Lou Reed sang about heroin and is legendary for it. This is the most beautiful song about drug addiction I have ever heard; and one of the best love songs. |

darnhoodlums interpretation is interesting. At the very least this sounds like a song he wrote in the bar which he was known to do. |

Just a thought. What if he was cutting other people out of the picture (possibly step-dad?) to leave "you and me". Then "burning it backwards" i.e. burning the part he cut away. |

Just a note. (maybe obvious to everyone else.) It sounds like he says "Cop" instead of "Cope" which makes more sense. |
