I thought it maybe was about someone who fought in a war and survived, but has seen terrible things. The fair-faced young man can both be reference to a friend he lost, or to himself (who is now not that bright faced and eager anymore, after everything...) He goes back home and carries on living a normal life, he tries to forget ("You carried their dead weight and let it fall by the wayside and buried those years one dark evening") but he still remembers everything that happened ("Keep the secret") The song is a kind of mantra for this person to keep going ("Plumb and level", to be normal and well adjusted) and to leave the war behind him ("Stow the shovel") and try to be happy even though terrible things happened ("Keep the Joy"). This person might seem somewhat withdrawn from society and antisocial ("Keep the quiet") but this is not what is going on inside his head... ("No, you're not shy, keep the fire... smoldering") |

| Okay, that's very interesting and I'm inclined to believe it except that I hear him sing "I took -A- no-face by his beak" instead of "I took No-face by his beak" which is rather less specific and you wouldn't use 'a' if you were speaking about a specific 'beast'. Am I just hearing things or are the above lyrics wrong? | |

Interesting interpretation, I like it. I find the lyrics quite violent, i.e. "Bludgeon till the body's cold" That's just over the top so maybe more than just 'free the people' but also cause widespread anarchy and violence? As for Blalocks indie/rock playlist: Me too! I discovered Owen this way and I now love all his songs, especially this one :) |

I'm going to incorparate all of your theories into one awesome theory that explains everything: Ok. Spunky is a mentally ill patient who might or might not be E's sister. Thanks for her 'handicap' the world doesn't really expect her to be able to do antyhing, she has a lousy job somewhere, for which she had to wear a lousy uniform. However, she changed her home/garage into an orphanage for kitties! She takes care of these kittens, saving them from starvation. She makes a life for herself and is happy and gives up her job, returning the uniform and all. She had bigger dreams than that, though, opening these kitty orphanages around the country! However, people still laugh at her. She doesn't care, she just loves kitties, and thinks it's the way to saving the world! Hm, guess I left the part out about her being a prositute... aww, well, whatever. |
