Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia Lyrics

Not to mention the hippies had pretty much gutted actual political resistance, considering that being enlightened was the real revolution. . . . much of the reason for punk was actually a reaction against this complacency, using tactics of shock first developed by the Situationalists during the much less flower-powery student rebellions in Paris '68. |

Beastie Boys – Egg Raid on Mojo Lyrics
|
This is actually about a real event - a promoter in New York, Mojo, was notorious in the late 70's for ripping off bands their share of the door. He did this numerous times to the Beastie Boys, who responded one night be sneaking back and throwing eggs on him.
Mojo is still around New York, still promoting, and still ripping off bands, as of 2008 at least. |

Metric – Sick Muse Lyrics

Huh, I always heard it as MOMMY is a sick muse. Which given the references to Cupid (and muses, another element of greek mythology) would refer to Aphrodite, Cupid's mother, and thus to love as a whole. |

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics

It is about sleep, as a metaphor. Specifically about not sleeping because of drug use (in our dreams, we can live our misbehavior). Thus the rebellion. |

Belle & Sebastian – Seymour Stein Lyrics

Actually the girl in this is someone he left behind - the entire theme is one of being trapped in the music business, rather than back home with the "North County girl". Ultimately his choice is to reject the life of fame and stay in his home country, rather than become a jet setting rock star. "Record company man I won't be coming to dinner", etc.
"Has he ever seen Dundee" references a small city in Scotland. |

PJ Harvey – A Place Called Home Lyrics

The instrument I think is a combo organ, which is basically a fan powered accordian tone - the sustain is just too long for either an accordian or harmonica. |

Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited Lyrics

Just a note, the 'incestous family' is actually a blues reference. The Seventh Son is blues term for a folklore concept, and was a staple of blues musicians in the 40's and 50's. Both Howlin' Wolf and Leadbelly (whom Dylan got the talking blues from, by way of Woody Guthrie) had recorded versions of this song. |

Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics

Just wanted to note that 'one more white nigger' is a clear reference to Ireland - white nigger was a derogatory term for the Irish in the 19th Century.
The general meaning of the song is the death of the British Empire and the foolishness of trying to run the world by force. |
