I think the above explanation is as good as any. At the time this song came out there were all kind of anti-Vietnam and anti-Nixon meanings attributed to the song. I think that the story is just a story and is vague enough to create many allegorical connotations to the lyrics. It is also a great dramatic rock and roll arena song. |

This song is about BT in the 1970's. After reaching the top of the music industry Bernie became indulgent in alcohol and drugs. The great success they had came crashing down. This was partly because that extreme level of success is never sustained. Also the drugs and general burn-out played a role as did EJ's coming out of the closet which in that era caused a dramatic fan backlash.
BT often writes in a not so direct way and weaves two disparate stories together. Here he tells the story of drug excess and weaves in the tale of their lost popularity commercially with the allegorical house falling down. |
