Iggy Pop – China Girl Lyrics 10 years ago
Though the album was recorded in France, the two guys were mostly living in Germany at the time. The town Iggy (and David) stumbled into was Berlin, hence the swastikas.

The B-52's – Quiche Lorraine Lyrics 13 years ago
Did she run away because she objected to Fred's canine fashion sense?

We all know that the walrus was Paul, so maybe the porpoise is Nancy.

Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is awesome. I do think it's interesting that the creepiness of some of the lyrics is neutralised by the jaunty electronic beat and the pulchritude of Pete Burns. If some guy came up to me talking about tracing my phone number and having to have his way because he's set his sights on me (and no one else) I'd be figuring out how to get a restraining order.

Buzzcocks – Boredom Lyrics 15 years ago
Seems they liked the guitar riff so much they reused it for "Fast Cars". It does have the coolest two-note solo I've ever heard.

Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics 15 years ago
It's ungrammatical, that's what it is! "Lay" is a transitive verb so it requires an object. She's either laying HERSELF (or some other random thing) across the big brass bed or she's LYING across it.

In all fairness, rock and roll doesn't require good grammar and I readily admit I can be a pedantic little snot.

The "dog" explanation actually makes sense. When I think of someone lying (or even laying) "across" a big bed, I think of them lying parallel to the line of pillows; perpendicular to the standard position -- like a dog sleeping at her human's feet.

The Beatles – She's a Woman Lyrics 16 years ago
I've been a Beatles fan all my life, so I can be a little precious about cover versions, and I usually avoid televised "talent" contests like American Idol -- but I thought Chikezie's bluegrass cover of this song was genius.

The Beatles – Got to Get You Into My Life Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm with the stoners and sympathisers -- I think it makes a far better drug song than a love song. As a "love" song to a person I can't help thinking it sounds a bit creepy with the full-on devotion at first sight, but as an ode to pot it evokes the exuberance of one of those head-stones that make you chatter nonstop and giggle at everything.

John Lennon – Dear Yoko Lyrics 16 years ago
I think he changed with age, and while Yoko didn't change him per se, she encouraged him to pursue certain creative avenues (or, as you said, brought out his inner hippie). There was a reason they got together in the first place, after all, and I like to think it was because they had a lot in common despite the superficial differences.

Kings of Leon – Joe's Head Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, I pretty much reckon that this song is "Hey Joe" (which is old as the hills and was still pretty old when Hendrix covered it) from Joe's perspective.

Bikini Kill – Liar Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the posters above who (from different angles) point out the impotency of "give peace a chance" (hence the screaming). I think it's also significant that it's a John Lennon song. Don't get me wrong, I love Lennon, but before he became Mr Peace and Love he was a wife-beating, friend-manslaughtering, philandering asshole -- the kind of person who "profits from the lie". The only reason I can separate the art from the artist in his case is that I believe his conversion was sincere.

The Kinks – See My Friends Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds like a predecessor to "Love the One You're With", y'know, like he's relying on his pals for more than moral support.

John Lennon – Whatever Gets You Thru the Night Lyrics 16 years ago
It was at this very concert that Yoko sat backstage, ready to take John back after the "lost weekend".

John Lennon – (Just Like) Starting Over Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, John wrote this song about his renewed relationship with Yoko, and Yoko wrote "Hard Times are Over"... they seemed so happy and hopeful but that didn't last long. Extremely poignant.

Split Enz – I See Red Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the way the similes and metaphors are carried on and on; the toothpaste in the first verse and the colours in the second.

John Lennon – Dear Yoko Lyrics 16 years ago
Yoko's been the target of a crapload of racism and sexism. The '60s may be remembered as a time of revolution and liberation but it was still horribly hidebound (it's not really much better now but I digress). The thought that everyone's favourite lad hero could allow himself to be influenced by a Japanese-American feminist conceptual artist was horrifying to some people. Never mind that part of being in love is being able to see things from your beloved's perspective, or that John had always been quite fond of the avant-garde.

The D4 – Mysterex Lyrics 16 years ago
Great cover of a great song by '70s/'80s NZ punk band The Scavengers. Mike, the Scavengers' original lead singer ditched them to make the very non-punk move of taking a respectable job in advertising, and this song was their response.

Love the Beatles reference. Plus, I generally agree with every sentiment expressed in this song. What can I say, I'm indolent.

Le Tigre – They Want Us To Make A Symphony Out Of The Sound Of Women Swallowing Their Own Tongues Lyrics 16 years ago
It's sarcasm. From the title (and admittedly from stuff I've read goodness knows where, so no cites sorry) I get that it's denouncing people who think that feminism isn't valid just because women don't all think with one big hive-mind. Of course she doesn't know the one final answer to that rather sweeping question; she's not going to presume to speak for every young feminist. The anti-feminists will be all over the "sound of her swallowing her own tongue", ostensibly because she doesn't answer the question straight away so her ideology "fails" according to them, and there's also an underlying current of misogynist sadism that wouldn't mind her literally choking.
