Flyleaf – Missing Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe that "the queen" is either a mother or someone who the narrator did not feel affection from, and the first verse references feeling something missing and seeking affection. The "daughters of Eve" are either friends or girlfriends (depending on whose POV the song is from) who provide temporary comfort but ultimately don't stop the pain of seeking affection because they are hurting too.

Flyleaf – Arise Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the first line about "we will make it out alive, there's a note on the pages of the book" refers to the Biblical promise of a new life. Other than that, everything else has pretty much been covered :)

Nightwish – The Siren Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the people who saw a connection between this and The Odyssey are right. It's possible that Tuomas could be using the story of Odysseus and the sirens as a metaphor for a romantic relationship. Odysseus knows that the sirens will cause him to crash on the rocks and die if he turns toward their enchanting song, so he tells his men to tie him to the ship. He gets his men to put wax in their ears, but he doesn't do the same. It could be a story of a man who wants to be with a woman even though he knows she will hurt him. He refuses to avoid her influence completely, though, because he thinks he will be strong enough to resist her.

Simon and Garfunkel – 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night Lyrics 15 years ago
Additionally, considering the fact that the news wasn't actual news but a selection of stories put together by the recording studio: it makes sense that the underlying message might be the necessity of standing up for yourself and for what's right.

Standing up against the Vietnam war might get you blacklisted by HUAC, but it's the "greatest single weapon" working to end the war.

Speck, alone, killed nine nurses by strangling them with their own bedsheets, and none of them fought back.

etc.

Simon and Garfunkel – 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night Lyrics 15 years ago
The "news broadcast" is actually a collection of the some of the headlines of the times read together as if they were a single news announcement. I think the song is primarily anti-war, but it's also just a sad commentary on the chaos of the time.

Simon and Garfunkel – Richard Cory Lyrics 15 years ago
The original poem is wonderful, too. I think the meaning is pretty clear, although the poem and the song are slightly different. The narrator in the song seems to be expressing a bit more anger toward Richard Cory than the narrator of the poem, who seems to completely idolize him.

E.A. Robinson's original (since no one's posted it yet):

"Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich – yes, richer than a king –
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head."

Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think the original song had very much to do with the "Mrs. Robinson" of the movie The Graduate. The impression that I got when I first heard the song was of a woman, perhaps an aging woman, who had been committed to either a mental institution or who was an alcoholic. Maybe both.

"We'd like to know a little bit about you for our files
We'd like to help you learn to help yourself
Look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home"

and

"Hide it in a hiding place where no one ever goes
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes
It's a little secret, just the Robinsons' affair
Most of all, you've got to hide it from the kids"

I think the last verse is from Mrs. Robinson's perspective. It seems to be talking about how everything has changed from the 40's-50's to now.

Simon and Garfunkel – Cecilia Lyrics 15 years ago
Paul had a dog (a black lab, I believe) named Cecilia. The song isn't about the dog, it's just a random story about a girl who they named after his dog. ;)

Simon and Garfunkel – America Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about chasing the meaning of America and finding personal meaning in life amidst the changing culture of the 60's-70's. Maybe that's an oversimplification, I don't know. Anyway, the "counting the cars on the New Jersey turnpike" part sends chills up my spine, too! This is one my favorite Simon & Garfunkel songs :)

Simon and Garfunkel – A Poem On The Underground Wall Lyrics 15 years ago
The four-letter, one word poem is most definitely "Fuck". Paul Simon's inspiration for writing the song came from when they tried to shoot the album over for "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM" in the New York Subway and found that much of their photographs couldn't be used because the subway walls were covered in obscenities.

The deeper meaning, I think, would be in relation to what was happening in the country in the 60's with censorship and the anti-society culture. I just love the feeling to the song, personally. I love how he could take something so simple and make such a lovely song :)

Simon and Garfunkel – For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't find the video on Youtube at the moment, but I've seen Paul Simon explain that For Emily is not necessarily about a girl but about a belief. He added that the song "Overs" was about losing that belief. So in that regard (and I really wish I could find the video) it seems to be about chasing dreams, and Overs would be about broken dreams.

Nightwish – While Your Lips Are Still Red Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about loving while you still can, while the person you love is still around, etc. "While your lips are still red" might be referencing how when someone dies their lips turn blue.

Nightwish – Gethsemane Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song could have dual meanings - about a love between two people and also about the love that Christ has for the world that betrayed him.

Evanescence – Away From Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Although I know Evanescence isn't a Christian band, this song definitely seems like it's talking about God. It seems like she strayed from God and found that life alone was worse. Of course, kinda like with October, it could also be talking about a relationship.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – Damn Regret Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, it seems like it's talking about being caught up in the moment and hooking up with someone without stopping to think about it; and then regretting it later.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – Misery Loves Its Company Lyrics 16 years ago
What I personally hear in this song is a reference to the "alternative" culture, how you must act *broken* and nhilisitic to be taken seriously. At least that's what I hear "The absense of my tears is my sobriety...beat but I'm not broken."

Nightwish – Bye Bye Beautiful Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pretty sure the lyrics don't just say "bye bye beautiful." Nightwish's website only lists the line once, but you can clearly hear "bye bye beautiful, die die beautiful" at the end of the chorus.
