The Flaming Lips – The Ego's Last Stand Lyrics 13 years ago
"it helped me through mine, knowing i wasn't alone."

Oh, wow. That's interesting. I had a very similar experience, with a lot of really weird feelings of ego loss and death anxiety and de-realization, and I turned to this album a lot as well.

Joanna Newsom – Go Long Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think it's so much about Bluebeard per se but rather using Bluebeard as kind of a symbol of modern oppressive relationships? The references to Bluebeard are pretty clear and fairly numerous but there's a lot else to it as well, I think.

It's like Dolly Parton meets Syd Barrett, in the best possible way imaginable.

The Flaming Lips – I Can Be a Frog Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that in this song, after experiencing ego death in The Ego's Last Stand, the female character that's in like almost all the songs is telling the protagonist that they're free to be anything since they're not longer tied down by their egos.

And then in the next song you have that weird priest-like character urging his listeners to be free like the characters in this song are.

I guess.

TV on the Radio – Love Dog Lyrics 15 years ago
Might be a stretch but I wonder if there's a connection to that "But this is beginning to feel like the dog wants her bones saved" line from DLZ.

Well versed I am in the tain of my birth, my diminishing role in this sphere....

of Montreal – Id Engager Lyrics 16 years ago
I've also read "8-bit empire" somewhere but I'm not really sure that makes anymore sense than epic, aphid, or apex. I guess I could also see a mispronunciation of effete.

Also: "Is my Concorde on the launcher?"

of Montreal – Id Engager Lyrics 16 years ago
"He's just a slutty little flirt"

Also I hear "don't wanna be a man" the first time. And I'm thinking it's something like "aphid empire" or "apex empire" instead of epic.

Reminds me of Hissing Fauna, so that makes me happy. Weird gender issues and stuff, I guess from Georgie Fruit and all.

The intro reminds me of Pow R Toc H.

of Montreal – The Past Is a Grotesque Animal Lyrics 16 years ago
"But you know, no matter where we are
We're always touching by underground wires"

I don't really know if you can call a set of lines nocturnal or noctural sounding or whatever, but it's kind of like those "I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams" type lines from The Microphones - the Moon.

And then it goes into that theremin sound, which is exactly what I imagine underground wires sounding like.

Hissing Fauna's pretty much a modern-day Abbey Road, though, layout-wise, and maybe one of the best senses of flow from track to track I've ever heard on an album.

of Montreal – We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leafling Lyrics 16 years ago
The way this song sounds makes me think of ambiguous-looking spaceships emitting vapor trails and criss-crossing eachother inside of some purple nebula. I don't really know why.

Coldplay – Strawberry Swing Lyrics 16 years ago
Title of this song reminds me of this movie called The Strawberry Statement. I've never seen it, but it's about the clumbia university protests in the 1960s.

Coldplay – Yes Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm getting this sort of Augie March-ish vibes from some of these songs. Anyway though, in this case, I'm thinking something more like a uh... married couple, who started out really passionate, but then the love and sexlife are dying and now his wife's gone or something. Maybe a little like Radiohead's House of Cards, thematically, although if that's finding a solution in swinging, this is still searching for an answer.

The big toe part really reminds me of a baby, though, for some reason. Maybe they had a kid and that ruined the marriage.

Dig the shoegazey second part thing.

Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics 16 years ago
The thing with the cat reminds me about something Bill Maher once said, about how married men live longer, and how housecats also live longer, but they tend to be sad, broken masses of fur that can only stare at a world they never get to experience or something to that effect.

Justice – DVNO Lyrics 16 years ago
Modified the last guy's post a bit. I don't know if this is any better.

It's always the same
always ashamed
story telling when i can come in
(something) throw the dice (?)
But one more time
my answer stands
I swear I mean no offense
But you better learn to read
it's all 'bout membership

and for you young and old
Ugly girls and boys
I put you on my list
And make you clap (your hands?) to this
It's mayhem, Just an ego trip
Only one can win
And soon you say it (He's just making this Nnnn sound I think).

Espers – Dead King Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the instrument on Dead King is a hurdy-gurdy. Real one, I mean. Not an organ grinder. I'm THINKING I read this somewhere, by the way, so I'm not actually sure if that's what it is or not.

Roxy Music – More Than This Lyrics 16 years ago
I remember reading a lot of reviews saying Roxy Music went soft with Avalon, but the album always seemed pretty subversive to me. Talking about, "After the party's over," and how there's "Nothing more than this."

Devendra Banhart – Chinese Children Lyrics 16 years ago
I wonder if it's similar to the hidden track White Reggae Troll/Africa. You know, like, "Africa, we all came from ya." Only this time it's, "China, we all came from ya."

Devendra Banhart – Hey Mama Wolf Lyrics 16 years ago
"when you're under me"

I always got a sexual meaning from this line. Something like making love to nature. I don't know. The back half of Cripple Crow is weird. It's front loaded with a bunch of cute songs that might be a bit goofy and hippy at times, but Dragonflies hits and then the music starts existing in its own song-space and turns into some sort of Sgt. Pepper's-esque meltdown.

The Knife – From Off to On Lyrics 16 years ago
"deleting and killer whales" Sounds a lot like "litres and kilograms" to me. I know that's not what the booklet says, but just listen to it.

I don't really see this about TV watching. I just get like... images of maybe two lovers, or maybe two kids that are home without parents... just being at home, sleeping on the couch with the lights off and dreaming with the TV on in the background.

Guided by Voices – A Salty Salute Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrics book says 'settlers.' Settlers is not the word in the song. It's either set list or sexless. I might be wrong about which word it is but it's definitely not settlers. Or if it is it's being pronounced REALLY strangely.

Before and After Science pretty much has some of the sickest bass and synth interplay *ever*

Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 16 years ago
Idle thought: The swinger party is pretty obvious. What if, though, it's about like, two swingers meeting at a swinger party - *NOT* the husband and wife - and the narrator is urging the other one to abandon their crappy home life, and saying he'll do the same?

submissions
Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 16 years ago
I wonder -- maybe this is about a couple that used to be passionately in love, got married, and then the passion died? You really see this with a lot of couples that've been married for a long time. It does seem like it's about a marriage collapsing but it's sort of a happy sounding song.

when he sings the 'denial' bits he really reminds me of john lennon a lot, tho the song as a whole seems to have more of a Stand By Me vibe to it.

Radiohead – Faust Arp Lyrics 16 years ago
I think thom yorke said in some interview (probably on pitchfork? Maybe I read that here) that the album was supposed to be about lingering dread or something -- probably the same kind that Flaming Lips - Suddenly Everything Has Changed is about.

the faustian themes really would fit that perfectly though. the idea about finding a perfect moment and being sent to hell for it (but wasn't faust redeemed?)

also, two lines from nude (which is older of course):

"Now that you've found it, it's gone"

"You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking"

I think I heard that Nude was supposed to be about meaningless sex

maybe 'arp' in the title refers back to 'arpegi' or something. there's some organization whose abbreviation is ARP (i think someone else on this site mentioned that) but it was political in nature and this album doesn't seem that political.

Radiohead – Arpeggi Lyrics 16 years ago
As for the weird fishes/we're fishes thing, I think it might be intended to be heard as both. Radiohead's done stuff like that before (Idiotheque, Sit Down/Stand up).

Anyway, it's sort of a companion song to PYramid Song I think. But whereas where that one sounded sad and lonely, this sounds rathe excited, like the narrator's happy to escape and become part of nature. So yeah, maybe Pyramid Song's like the video -- diving into the ocean on some dead planet and waiting for the oxygen to run out, and this is the realization that the narrator's not alone and is part of nature or something like that.

Sort of like with the buzzards from Mircrophones - Mount Eerie, maybe?
