I was waiting down at the ancient gate.
AND
I remember how they took you down
As the winter turned the meadow brown. |

The Knife – Still Light Lyrics

The last two lines of this song make me despair immeasurably... It seems as if the person who is ailing is still in whatever delerium that resulted from the suicide attempt/whatever, and the way she sings it, it seems as if she's asking "Where is everybody?" when to everyone but her it is obvious that everybody is already gone... |

The Knife – Neverland Lyrics

The Geisha theory has merit, but either way I think it's definitely about violence towards sex workers and the general oppression that results in prostitution work... "Nothing is more fatal than an angry man"... prostitutes are considered to be so low on the social ladder and so benefity little from sympathy or police protection and often fear violent reprisal. "Will I make it home tonight?" embodies the uncertainty that accompanies working alone with dangerous, dominating males. |

According to the band's website, this song is somewhat influenced by Charles Burns's Black Hole, an influential graphic novel. If you read it, a lot of the imagery in the song with coincide with the haunting, haunting book. |

The Knife – You Make Me Like Charity Lyrics

I think it's fairly plain: people in a position of high economic status tend to view the cause of assisting the poor as some kind of holy "charity" work than a fulfillment of a real responsibility. The voice of the song is having a kind of epiphany wherein it realizes that the rich in countries like the US are actually FAILING when they pay little taxes and don't assist the poor. |

It doesn't seem so much about finding god as it does finding comfort in the possibility that he might exist or the end might come someday. |

The Books – It Never Changes to Stop Lyrics

I like Nick's comment about it because this sort of person is obviously someone with very little real power, but an asteroid headed for us would have the gravity to command this kind of attention. The possibility of either case makes for something worth thinking about. |

What does everyone think about the obvious sexual dominance of the male voice in
Say you like it
Say you need it
When you don't
Looking better
Shining brighter
Than you do
Think about it--it easily recalls the pressure of society on girls and women to look always attractive and to act like they always desire and "need" sex from a man. |

I love this band because they can have pointed commentary about patriarchy (One Hit) and also hilarious satire like this. |

The Knife – One Hit Lyrics

Very insightful forblaze, except for the last verse, which I think has to do more with male privelege. "It's all obvious to me" seems to suggest that the man is excusing traditional gender roles by saying he wouldn't have a problem with doing laundry and that his partner is weak because it affects her so. The addition of "like the Corleones" continues to suggest that the male is still dominant. |
