Jim Croce – Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels) Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet, so I'll throw my interpretation out there. I think this song is about chickening out on calling the girl that he let get away and wants back. Speaking to the operator gives him someone to talk to about it without having to actually call the girl. If the matchbook is old and faded, it is only because he has looked at it so many times, and held it in his hand trying to work up the courage to call. He knows exactly what the number is before any of this started, but maybe if the operator can't find it, he'll have an excuse to give himself. When she does find it, he starts blaming "something in his eyes", alluding to tears, and asks the operator to help him place the call, and when she can do that too, he has to come up with something else, so he says "there's no-one there I really want to talk to", which isn't true, but he just can't work up the courage to call her right now.

Bruce Springsteen – For You Lyrics 8 years ago
This is definitely my favorite Bruce song. Without getting involved in breaking down each and every line, I think the song is reminiscing about the end of a relationship with a girl who had issues, and he is thinking back on how they were, all the things that attracted him to her in the first place, and how he tried to save her from her issues, but couldn't. I once dated a girl like that, and try as I might, I couldn't save her or protect her from her issues. It ended badly, and I know I am better off for it having ended, but I occasionally think about what could have been if things were a little different, and so much of the imagery in this song reminds me of her, and that time in my life.

Bruce Springsteen – Night Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, definitely one of my favorite Bruce songs.

As for the meaning, here's my view of it. He's had a bad day, got up late, got yelled at by the boss, etc., and everything seems at its worst, but "It feels right as you lock up the house, turn out the lights, and step out into the night", and the rest of the day doesn't matter because the races are where you really feel alive.

Anyway, that's my take on it. I know myself so many times after a bad day I have taken my car out in the middle of the night to tear it up for a bit, and once you are behind the wheel "with your faith in the machine, off you scream into the night", and all the other troubles seem to melt away.

Bruce Springsteen – Lost In The Flood Lyrics 16 years ago
This is how you know brilliantly written and performed poetry; there is no other way to put into words the meaning that he is trying to convey, but everyone gets it when they listen to it.

Bruce Springsteen – Blinded By The Light Lyrics 16 years ago
Pencilneck, that line has nothing to do with drugs. A boulder on his shoulder is a joke. You say someone has a chip (meaning a small rock) on their shoulder if they are always pissed about something, well he's saying he had a boulder on his shoulder, meaning he was totally pissed about nothing. The merrygoround is an actual merrygoround in asbury park, that was actually just recently taken down, but was there for years and back in the 70s and 80s was a place where young people would hang out. The line simply means that he thought he was older and wiser than the other people his age, so he would hang out at the merrygoround, pissed off, making fun of the other people there.

Bad Religion – Blenderhead Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favorite bad religion songs. The way I understand it is as follows; blenderhead referrs to someone who is constantly thinking and questioning everything. The line about flywheels is great cause a flywheel is something heavy that keeps rotating and is hard to stop, so once you start thinking like this, its difficult to stop, i.e. the flywheels keep churning. In the first chorus, Blenderhead is young and gets into trouble, and is very image concerned (radiate your splendor), and by the end of it, he has embraced his inquisitive nature and he carries on with valor.
