Dream Academy – Life In A Northern Town Lyrics 13 years ago
I also grew up in NE Ohio in the 70s, like another contributor here, and this song always reminded me of home, and hauntingly, of my grandfather, who also grew up in NE Ohio in the 1920s and 30s. I was unaware of the reference to Nick Drake; I'll definitely check him out. I looked up the lyrics this evening, as we are expecting a winter storm to roll through Ohio this evening.

I often feel that songs like this that have melodies that affect people so profoundly must be very old. Perhaps the melody was around thousands of years ago and it resonates in our cells. Like so many others, I always think about the past when I hear it - perhaps because of the lyrics, but even without them, they create such a longing in my heart that I feel I've known this song in past lifetimes!

I agree with the comments about this song being about a women in an abusive relationship. I should know, I just came out of one about 2 weeks ago! He was also so well-intentioned, but because of the abuse he suffered 40 some years ago, he 's never been able to maintain a healthy relationship. I had thought at first it was because he was so nice, that women took advantage of him. Boy, I couldn't have been further from the truth. I completely lost my friends, my family, and my own identity. I also have yelled at the movies and tv shows that portray these "helpless" women in abusive relationships. I consider myself very self-confident - I own my own home, I have 4 pets, a very successful career, and a healthy support system of several close friends. How could this has happened? Like the song says, the abusers are so well-intentioned. Everytime I got angry, he manipultated me to feel sorry for him.
Once it was over, my friends all came forth, telling me they wanted to say something about what I was doing, but were afraid that I would think they were crazy. And, at the time, I probably would have! But they all said the same thing - we were wondering what became of you....

This song definitely resonates with anyone who has been in abusive relationship. A word of encouragement - I'm 40, single, and happier than I've ever been in my life. DON'T SETTLE!

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 16 years ago
Brilliant and so true to the meaning of life, it's scary.

"It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on the faulty camera in our minds" is the most despairing line I've ever heard. I agree with Lennifus, that no matter how hard you try, the memories fade, and then comes a point where you want them to fade, which hurts even more.

and i rationed my breaths as i said to myself
that i'd already taken too much today
I think this plays into the thought you hear from people who say I should have been the one to die first, not XX (spouse, brother, sister, friend). It's as if they feel guilty because they are the ones that lived. This is often said after a car crash in which the person driving lives, but the person dead was a passenger. I think this song might be a situation after a car accident and the guilt that wrecks the one person that feels responsible for it.

Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics 16 years ago
I think he's dying and she was his true love. The beginning and an end that he refers to his when he met her, he felt like his life was just beginning as most people do when they meet "the one". And the end is the end of his life, when he wishes he could be that young boy that he still feels like, but he's changed so much.

And perhaps he has some regrets about his life with her. Perhaps him looking back about a trip on a motorbike reminds him of not living their lives to their fullest.

This song makes me cry to whenever I hear it!

Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, right, since it's set in the future, it can't refer to Bush, because we would never elect someone with the same name for the presidencial office. Duh, we did, and we'll do it again. It's because so many stupid people vote and sometimes they vote simply on the name.
Think about it...Clinton sounds like a nice political name, right? And if a Kennedy ran, I'm pretty sure they would get elected for any given office.

Hell, George W. probably has a kid somewhere and when he's deseparate enough, he'll run and we might just vote him in. After all, with a little time, we can all forget, can't we?

Modest Mouse – Missed the Boat Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it is a commentary on the downward spiral of humanity, or perhaps the typical American. (I know, pretty deep, but that's all I can think of when I hear this song!) Many of the lines seem to indicate that humanity may be finally waking up to bigger issues other than new promotions, going to see performances, damming up rivers, and making plans that held no water. But, by the time we all start living our lives as we should, it's too late. Dancing at our own wake is all we can do.

"Was it ever worth it" seems like a question to most people who working themselves half to death to be a super-consumer, impress friends, and have the right car, right house, etc. And why do we do this? Because we are all uncertain about what the future holds.

We didn't read the invite
This references people who's lives are over and they forgot to show up.

We built ourselves a pillar (or pillow)
Whichever way you hear this, it's humanity's way of creating an elevated spot, or a safe place to view all other life so we don't have to be concerned with it. If we didn't use it as a crutch, we might have started to realize long ago what was wrong with how we lived. But a crutch helps us keep our handicap forever.

Of course, many of us know this to be true, but we continue to go through the motions, carrying it off so well....

Either that or I'm listening to too much Reznor!
