Vampire Weekend – Don't Lie Lyrics 11 years ago
General Comment:I didn't take any particularly religious notes from this one, but in the first few listens, what stuck out to me is the concept of human mortality (and I guess how we live our lives as a result).

Maybe it's just because I had Zach Sobiech on the brain, but lines like "God's loves die young" made me think of people who -really- know they've got a limited time on this earth - the terminally ill, etc - and as a result of being so conscious of the time remaining, they often live the rest of their lives to the fullest.

But what about the rest of us? Why don't -we- live every day like we're dying? "There's a headstone right in front of you and everyone I know" -- we're -all- going to die eventually --- but the other lines remind us, "There's a lifetime right in front of you and everyone I know." Yes, we're all going to die, but until then, we can live!

I feel like some parts are singing to the person who doesn't treat life that way, who forgets that we have such precious little time. "I wanna know, does it bother you, the low click of a ticking clock?" Do you even realize that your life is ticking away every second, and you're not doing anything about it?

Questions of "Is he ready to go?" / "Are you ready to go?" seem to ask, if you died today, would you be okay with that? Could you leave this world feeling complete? Lines like, "Young hips shouldn't break on this ice" just feel like they're referring to people who have no reason -not- to be out living - you're not old or broken yet, why stop?

"It's the last time running through snow / 'Cause the fire can't last and the Winter's cold."
All in all, I just get a "Life is short, seize the day!" feeling from this song, but in a quiet, thoughtful, almost uncomfortable way. (Especially when you do hear a ticking clock mixed in toward the end of the song.)

So time's a-wasting - stop reading my mindless musical rambling, go out and enjoy your life. :)

The Tea Party – Taking Me Away Lyrics 13 years ago
quite a few errors on this one.. for example, it's "under friendly fire" not "under friendly skies" and there's a shorter chorus the first time.

oh well. still a great song, and a great band.

Yes, the music video is based on Hard Candy -- they say that in the "making of" (I recommend it anyway, Dero's cool and has a great sense of humor ^^) video.

Personally, I think the song can be very general, along the lines of what sgtsledge said. But it also fits well with the anti-pedo vid.. especially hearing "Noch heute Nacht wirst du schon sehn,
Beim letzten Mal schmerzt es noch mehr..." while the girl is mangling his bits and pieces.. :P Makes me cringe too, but it's still cleverly done.

And on a side note, I think they made her say 15 in the video just so it wouldn't be -too- shocking. Wouldn't be as well received if they used the same girl as the "Labyrinth" video, for example. This way, with this actress, it makes the point while still looking good.

Oomph! – Du Spielst Gott Lyrics 16 years ago
One of my favs :) Translation to English:

I will never accept your Hell
You'll never infect every cell

You always play God with your power
You always play God, who laughs at me

The wounds break open
Your work takes its course
Contaminated by your cure

I wake up devastated
The fear accepts me
Contaminated by your cure

(Heal me - Feel me )

My heart beats faster
While you dig deeper in me
The light gets brighter
While you hopelessly stimulate me

Open all my rooms
Show me all your games
Extinguish all my dreams
Take all my goals

How long have you deformed my frame
How long was my free will strangled

You always play God with your power
You always play God, who laughs at me

The wounds break open...

My heart beats faster...

I wake up devastated
The fear accepts me
Contaminated by your cure

The wounds break open...

Mike Doughty – Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well Lyrics 16 years ago
"Decathecting" could just as easily be withdrawal as it could be detaching oneself from an ex lover. I think it fits heroin addiction pretty well. Knowing Doughty had a problem with this, I agree with bridget21.

"Look here Billy, I think I see somethin' over here.."
"Is that.. is that one o' them things?"
"Yeah quick, hand me the flashlight!"
"I didn't bring a flashlight pop!"
"What? You didn't bring the flashlight?"
"I.. I didn't bring it!"
"Looks like the work of the things.. It looks..."
HAHAHAHA etc.
(or something like that?)

Man do I love this song :) Listened to it obsessively when the album first came out.

Yeah, I definitely prefer Chemical Bomb over this one, but it's still pretty catchy.

Yellow journalism is an actual term.. it means sensationalism via news that has been either exaggerated or downright distorted just to attract attention.
Town crier doesn't need to be the name of a particular paper either, though it could.. I think he's just bringing up an image of the real town criers, since they were the original sources of news (just shouting it on the streets) -- do you really trust the guy 'chilling with the village idiots' to give you the news?
Then the line about restaurants? Well I think it's saying anybody could be giving you that info. Guess you could skew it either way: either "common people have wisdom too" or "it might as well be my waiter giving me the info" ... not sure.

Oomph! – Land In Sicht Lyrics 16 years ago
My German isn't perfect, so feel free to correct, but here's my attempt at translation:
(Land in Sight)

I float on the jet black sea,
through the night
The hungry sea has nearly
killed me

I fight through the flood,
I taste my own blood

Land in sight
You are my land in sight
Land in sight
I can see you
You are my lighthouse beacon
So don't leave me
before I sink on your coasts

The storm has led my boat home
through the night
I've laughed at the foaming spray
long ago

I accept your cold wetness
I smell your damp grass

Land in sight
You are my land in sight
Land in sight
I can see you
You are my lighthouse beacon
So don't leave me
before I sink on your coasts
