A very well written post! I remember reading in a book (Songs That Saved Your Life) what morrissey said the song was about and it was unsurprisingly vague, I can't remember the actual quote but it was words to the effect of 'it was just a collection of lines that were very important'. I though maybe you'd like to know that =) It goes on to say that many of the lines were either inspired or borrowed from films which makes it a very difficult song to interpret... but very fun to listen to! |

I think it's a story where love actually has been given a price (a million pounds) which the husband can't quite afford. Sadly his wife has faked the kidnapping with her lover who then leaves her (taking the 800 000). She can't go back to her husband because he thinks she's dead and he'll know she screwed him over. So she's alone, the husband's alone - the price of love was too high... Definitely not a real kidnapping!
That's the actual story, I'm pretty sure that's right but maybe it's a metaphor for how much we're willing to give for our lovers but not necessarily in terms of money i.e we risk getting our hearts broken and doing things we hate to keep them happy.

I think its about nuking a city because they saw a load of marks on a radar and mistook it for an attack whereas in fact they were red balloons realeased by a couple that were in love and thought it'd be a laugh. I think thats fairly obv but what this is implying is the tricky part... |

To me this song is about desperation and the messes that young people get themselves into because of drugs, alcohol, etc. He describes different people's fractured lives that all 'tragically' end on this one night in London. I think he's also implying how meaningless their lives and consequently their deaths are:

I like the video too, this song is so sad really when you think about it. I think it's about havin a bet... if she wins the pingpong match then she gets 'money' and when he/she loses the forfit is eating 'beefjerky' which as everyone knows has an unpleasant after taste. And there is no running away from the bet!! Then the whole liar cheater thing... erm well she's losing but its blatantly becuase of a biased ref who's favouritising her opponent!

I think Davey uses religious imagery but that doesn't neccessarily mean the song is religious. I think its about him trying to help a girl with all her problems in the hope that he can be with her but he realises his own problems are hers and that they're 'falling' together, or something. It's really hard to interpret! Also maybe she keeps hurting him as he tries to help by rejecting him??? I think it's a bit more complicated than suicide... although yes the title blah blah blah I still don't think it's about suicide >:( |

Hm I don't think so ra me but I can see where you're coming from. Perhaps its the description of change from their old peaceful lives to their new ones where they work themselves to death in some sweaty factory that make it sound like its about time before/after a war but I don't think thats what they were getting at. This song is VERY sexual! ALthough the lyrics aren't particularly, just his voice... I think he's singing about breakups and how she'd give him another chance if she knew why he'd fucked up. I don't think he's talking about God just about where reality lies and the like. Ok here's what I think the song means...
It's about people who play the martyr so want to be abused. "Self-righteous suicide" is an important part of this, I think he feels frustrated that poeple who commit suicide are hailed as great people. Jesus was the ultimate martyr wasn't he, dying on the cross for our sins and all that rubbish. As for the title I really don't have much of a clue...
This is obviously only my opinion, this song can be interpreted differently by everyone and I think thats what makes it great. Oh and I forgot I think the line 'Angels deserve to die' supports my ponts wouldn't u say? |
