Chris Stapleton – Fire Away Lyrics 6 months ago
To me, this fits my life perfectly. I’m married to a hot-headed woman whose self defense mechanism is anger and defensiveness. Otherwise, she’s perfect. We have a beautiful relationship but if the slightest thing goes wrong (no matter how big or small) she’ll go into this mode where she uses words to defend herself. It’s rough sometimes but this song reminds me of exactly how it goes.

Diamond Rio – One More Day Lyrics 3 years ago
This may sound weird to some people, but this song makes me think of my dog. I was in my late 30s when I got him, shortly before I went through a very painful divorce. Over the next several years he was sometimes my only friend as I struggled with the effects of the divorce and other challenges to starting over in mid-life. I was closer to him than to any other dog I've ever known, and probably closer to him than any human I've ever known.

About a month ago I woke up one morning to find what looked like blood on the floor in a pattern indicating he had vomited. Over the next day or so he was extremely lethargic and seemed miserable. I took him to the vet and they ran blood tests, ultrasounds, etc., and determined he had irreversible kidney failure. He was hospitalized for a few days on IV fluids and medications and the vet called me one afternoon to say he probably wouldn't make it through the night. I was distraught all night, thinking about him all alone in a cage at the vet's office, dying. And what if I never got see him alive again? The next morning I went to the vet and picked him up and took him home. I spent the whole day comforting him, talking to him, bringing him water, petting him. The next morning I took him back to the vet to be euthanized.

I got that "one more day" with him. I made the most of it. I had no regrets because I always made the most of our days together and never took him for granted, but I was grateful for that "one more day" I got with him at the end.

Rest in peace, little buddy. I will always love you and that one more, special day we had.

The Highwaymen – The Highwayman Lyrics 3 years ago
I think this song is about the human spirit at various points in time and how the spirit never goes away even though the world changes and time moves on.

In the first verse the spirit is a highwayman, probably during the "Great Age of the Highwayman" which referred to men who laid in wait along the roads leading to and from London, England. They were essentially pirates of the road. He was hung in '25 (1625? 1725?) but he is "still alive."

The second verse tells the story of the human spirt during the age of sail. Possibly a pirate during the "Golden Age of Piracy," which peaked in the late 1700s to early 1800s, or perhaps a sailor who was fighting or victimized by pirates. His life was lost on the sea, but he is "living still."

The third verse obviously references work on the Hoover Dam, originally known as the Boulder Dam, which was built primarily during the Great Depression, the 1930s, in the United States. At the time it was the largest concrete structure ever built in the world and over 100 people died but it was a symbol of hope for Americans coming out of the Great Depression. The spirit died in "that great tomb that knows no sound" (buried in the largest concrete structure in the world would do that) but the spirit will always be "around and around and around and around...."

Finally, the spirit drives a spaceship, but not the kind we're normally used to thinking about with astronauts that fly to the moon. This spaceship apparently travels across the universe, something which hasn't happened yet but is plausible in the future. The spirit believe it will finally come to rest when that, currently unimaginable, event happens and the exploration of the entire universe is complete. Or maybe the spirit will reincarnate as a highway man again. Or a drop of rain. Regardless, the spirit will be back "again and again and again...."

Zac Brown Band – Chicken Fried Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm kinda with Sophie on this. I love Zac Brown, and I love country music, and I love this song. But sometimes I get tired of that stereotype she speaks of. Of course, I get tired of the rappers singing about bangin' hoes and shootin' cops, and I get tired of pop singing about sex in every abstract they can possibly put it. I guess it's the just the market they're playing to. Zac Brown plays to the redneck, beer-drinking, tobacco-spitting, barbeque-cookout types.

Zac Brown Band – Toes Lyrics 14 years ago
I think sometimes they just get used to saying something in a way that flows easier than the original lyrics, so over time it just gets recorded separately. Kind of like how they change things up substantively in a live song now and then, I think sometimes those subtle changes are just something that comes to them easier.

Zac Brown Band – Highway 20 Ride Lyrics 14 years ago
Seems to me like it's coming from two points of view; the father and the son, as if they're both singing parts of it. For example, seems like it's the boy saying he "rides" east every other Friday and he thinks that's a waste of days. But then the father says, "So I'll drive...." I think the first verse is both of them, then chorus is both of them, then the third verse is just the father and the last verse is just the son. It's like a sad conversation.

George Strait – Desperately Lyrics 15 years ago
See, I think it's about losing someone in a way that goes beyond just a broken relationship. I think he's missing someone who has possibly died, or maybe just the simple missing someone who doesn't want you anymore. Or, maybe it's about unrequited love. In any event, it reminds me of someone, and I miss her.

Kenny Chesney – Got A Little Crazy Lyrics 16 years ago
Why does this song have the line, "Are these your shoes that I have on?" In a way, it's kind of creepy to think he's there with a woman and his feet will fit in her shoes. The other conclusion of course is that he's there with a man, but that's inconsistent with "I think she might have paid me." Anyway, seems like, with all the controversy about whether he's gay, etc., Kenny wouldn't want that kind of line in the song.

Wow, hawaiiancowgirl, I never thought of that, but that's a good question. I just assumed he married Katey, but you've got a good point! But, I think he married her. Maybe because that's the way I want the song to go.
