It doesn't have to be one or the other. He could have been sincere for most of the song and then wanted to poke a bit in the end at the ways people often express faith. |

Anybody who deeply loves this song would appreciate Sean Rowe's cover off Her Songs. Lately I go back and forth between the two. |

@[originalspies:17513] Wow, beautiful exposition. Reminds me of the tragic final lines from The Glass Menagerie.
"Oh, Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be! I reach for a cigarette, I cross the street, I run into the movies or a bar, I buy a drink, I speak to the nearest stranger—anything that can blow your candles out! For nowadays the world is lit by lightning! Blow out your candles, Laura—and so, goodbye… |

This guy claims this is the saddest song ever written:

I think about that question a lot, and I can't disagree. It murders me every time and never loses its power. |

I always sing "I couldn't place it though, *but loved you being so close.*
My favorite part of the song. Remembering the feeling of someone you love being close, or hoping for the feeling in the future--what better reason to keep going? |

Sun Kil Moon – Among The Leaves Lyrics

I was so caught up with how pretty this song sounds, I didn't catch the clear narrative until maybe ten listens. A homeless girl stays in this guy's house, likely a touring musician. And he wishes she wouldn't scare off so easily, wishes he could make her feel welcome and share his home. Aside from this, I love every specific detail of this song, the floor covered in long blond curls and paper romance, and on and on. |
