Metallica – The Unforgiven II Lyrics 16 years ago
I am not a great expert of Metallica (but a great fan, that's for sure), but what I have noticed is that James Hetfield's lyrics usually relates to his personal life. He may have said that this song relates to love and murder but generally poets (because that's what Hetfield really is) are poor analysts of their own texts. What I think is that so far (until Load and Reload) in his own personal life, Hetfield was living a chaotic and lonely life, trying to solve many things with his own past. On Load and Reload, the lyrics are more direct, the music is not so speedy as the previous albums. He takes their time to say things and to put his feelings in words.

When he says Lay beside me it won't hurt, it could also mean lay beside me, don't be afraid of what I am I am not going to hurt you.
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again = she doesn't seem to make up her mind about him, but she'll never love anyone else than him.
Now I see the sun: now I am loved and see how I could be happy
I always thought that he wrote this song more or less at the time he met his wife.

Metallica – Mama Said Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, as a mother here is the way I understand it:
Left home at an early age
Of what I heard was wrong
It's his mother who left home, not him...
I need your arms to welcome me
But a cold stone's all I see
He wishes she was still alive...
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
emptiness: she is dead and not there anymore and he will be without her until he dies
Let my heart go: he wishes he could forgive her and not think of her with so many disturbing feelings such as hate, regrets, guilt, I guess this is a way of him letting her go too. Also, he is not having the kind of life she would have dreamt of for his son and that makes him somehow guilty.
I think everybody can understand this song the way they feel. This is the magic of Hetfield's lyrics. Made me realise lots of things.
