Travis – Out In Space Lyrics 16 years ago
i like how there is a musical shift when he sings "and i'm leaving", then "we should spend some more time looking from the end" follows. when this musical shift happens it's like he find the answer, "we’d blame ourselves as much as we’d blame weed"

the religion interpretation is very interesting and accurate. but the middle verse and "what had you heard? was it love, was it take another walk in the dark?" throw me off.

i am confused by the people involved in the song. is it written in a diaristic manner of using a third person to think of one self or is he literally trying to understand another person?

there is certainly an unawareness going on of some sort of contract. he was given something to read, he doesn't understand it, but still signs it. the woman who gave him the text (and possibly wrote it?) realizes he didn't understand it, and therefore, she doesn't smile. by the chorus, i can tell he's not worried about that 'contract' and the fact he signed it without knowing what it was because he doesn't fear to lose, or care to win. and if he thinks this way, there is no need in praying, is there?

also, "i'd pray to god if there was heaven / but heaven seems so very far from here"... he is not denying there is a heaven by saying it's far, but still he's not praying to god.

here's something i found:

Travis – Last Train Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is about knowing there is no solution to helping someone out when they're makign a wrong decision.

cautionarysong said 'flowers in the window' is a reference to pregancy - could you explain? my only guess is it's a symbol for happiness, taking it from the song of the same name "wow now look at you now, flowers in the window, its such a lovely day and im glad that you feel the same". he's troubled but the girl is happy (probably with a new lover?)

the singer and the girl were together once, "you left me on the shelf and now there's no one to rely on" proves there was once a relationship, and she ended it.

"rain on the brain" to me means that the singer is going through a lot of thinking and confusion. the first lines are directed to different subjects, the girl ("now there's flowers in your window / but if it's all the same to you..."), and us - the audience ("she's so strange / i don't know anything about her") - these two lines refference to other songs by the band, "flowers in the window", and "she's so strange" which is, interestingly enough, about a girl who has found a dead end in her life.

the singer seems to be going through profound heartache, enough to make him do things to 'shake her awake' from her decision to end the relationship. however, it is clear he doesn't have the power to do that. even in his attempts to write a song or buy a gun, he knows she will miss the opportunity to realize. he warns "this could be the last train" for her.

he wants to meet up with the numbness in her ("search within yourself for feelings, everybody's got them") by "shoot everything everyone" and blaming it on her.

his point becomes even cloudier when he relates to an image of che guevara, but makes clear the important thing is the feeling his getting, and not what is going on around him. this part of the song reminds me (like scaredycat said) of "why does it always rain on me" when he sings: "still life on a shelf when i've got my mind on something else". seems like he's going through the same situation in this song.

finally, "what's the poing in doing all of that" is a defeating statement of knowing there's no use in his approach to her.
