To me, this indicates that his mental defenses are broken and a calm has come over him, all the while barely keeping afloat during his 'swimming hour'.
The effects have taken their toll, and are 'all contributions to my attrition'. The last lines are powerful, being so full of emotion, and confirming that this struggle has left a long-lasting physical imprint on him.
Great song, and one of my favorites from the album. |

The only thing that I can add is that Mike Mills is an American video producer, and created the "All I Need" music video with Air. How (or if) the song actually relates to him is anyone's guess..

After giving this a few listens, I feel that the song tells more of a story than the lyrics might suggest. It seems that there is an opening at the start of the song, where Kelly sits down (or is told) to watch the stars.
Starting simply, deeper and more complex layers of sound are mixed into the song, along with streaking-type effects that vary across the left and right channels. A beautiful piano segment is added in, with all of this seeming to build up the mystery of the stars and space. You can almost see the meteors flaring across the night sky. The song ends as simply as it began, because that is what we see; sky hiding an unknown depth of beauty. It's all out there in the stars. |

I agree with Egghead's comments for the most part. Nick Drake has the theme of nature deeply engraved in some of his songs, and instead of 'green' meaning inexperienced, I think it just means 'full of life'. As for the last stanza, I don't think he's talking about someone in particular, just anyone that will save him from fading away.
The lyrics in this song remind me alot of the ones in 'Cello Song, in how they both reflect on a brighter childhood, and a darkness coming into his life later on. |

I enjoy how, with this album in particular, the instrumental in the background complements and almost elevates his sound. 'Cello Song is the perfect mesh of Nick Drake's haunting voice, mesmerizing acoustic, and instrumental backup.
As for the lyrics, I get a feeling from his music that he feels the world is far different from the one he enjoyed as a child. This song seems to express his longing for the place he once felt comfortable with. "Lend me a hand and lift me To your place in the cloud." |
