Local Natives – Mt. Washington Lyrics 11 years ago
Holy fuck this song is beautiful. I think this song is both loving and sweet and cold and sad at the same time.... To me, it's about a lover that he still loves, but he doesn't need in his life right now. You can read it as being a very sad song, that he doesn't NEED to see this person, but the "right now" is genius.....implying that he will want to or HAVE to see this person some time in the future.

But that's just like...my interpretation, man.

A sadder interpretation of the song....It's someone who normally has to see that he really doesn't like to see....maybe a family member, a parent, that he really clashes with, and he is relieved that he doesn't have to see them.

But i see it much more as a person that he is in a long-distance relationship with. He loves this person, but that person is not the only person in his life. Maybe a lover back home that he's left while he's on tour.

I have heard someone say they are Birthday candles. I like this explanation, but I would love to hear any other interpretations.

Neon Indian – 6669 (I Don't Know If You Know) Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is so seductive and dark.

I think it's about how fragile the mind is. It holds so much information, and yet we can be disturbed or beat down by just one thing, if it really strikes us in the right spot.

MGMT – Destrokk Lyrics 16 years ago
I see the message of this song as keep on asking questions.
MGMT wants their listeners to question authority to question as much as they can. As they once said, they want to "scare the squares" What will you learn after endless questioning? That you don't know much, but you probably know more than most people. It's that socratic irony. all i know is that i don't know.

I think if you ask enough questions you realize a great sadness about life. You appreciate the complexity a lot more, but you realize that no one has a fuckin' clue why we're here or how to live the good life.

One of the most controversial issues is drugs. It's taboo, and people shy away from the issue. I think MGMT would admit to experimenting and tell you drugs can be good and bad depending on how they're looked at or how their used..
People may wonder why they use certain drugs or why they act so strange. If you keep on asking questions, you'll know why they act the way they do. They're just having fun and being pranksters

I don't think it's regret about drug use. I think it's just admitting that drugs and partying are a confusing part of people's lives. It can be great memorable fun, and it can also send you down the drain.

I think the "we love you in glacial ways." is like saying we love you in cold distant ways. Maybe it's a shout-out to all of their listeners, who they love and feel connected to without actually seeing them.
Or it's just people in their lives that they come in contact with but are not really close to. We can be come off as cold towards people but still love them deep down.

MGMT – Metanoia Lyrics 16 years ago
oh my god-damn, this song gets so 70s rock to me. Reminds me of zeppelin at parts.

Metanoia is a mental breakdown with the purpose of reconstructing the psyche in a new more positive way. It's an attitude of seeing a breakdown as a good thing. It also refers to thoughts that are just beyond your scope or reach. I often wonder what else I could be thinking.

My favorite part is the line starting with "mystic referee." I think mystic referee is f***ing great imagery. That feeling that if someone is up there watching our actions, they'll be able to follow our line of thought and understand why we choose to do the things we do.

Satchidananda was or still is? a very spiritual guru from India who spent many many years meditating.
Maybe he is the mystic referee being refered to.

The lyrics seem to be longing for a certain spiritual certainty. He wants to know he's on the right path. maybe he is, and his ambition and indecisiveness is actually blessed and justified...
but there is another part of him saying he's on the wrong path, seperate from the mystic referee, and he knows it. He will come back to religion later in life after he has given up trying to solve his problems w/o any religion.

And in the middle of these deep thoughts....a kid comes up wanting a free ticket. They don't play his favorite song, and now they're afraid he'll never come to another show.

The lyrics go from extremely deep to hilariously trivial. And that's why I love MGMT so much.

MGMT – Of Moons, Birds & Monsters Lyrics 16 years ago
I'll say what this song means to me...

This song is about getting so analytical in your own head, coming up with your own rules for how to interact with people, how to carry on just the right image, that you miss out on the things that are really important, all because you were working on your own "pale grey garden."
Also, as we're building our own gardens to show off to other people, we feel that something will come along to save us and turn all of our hard work around and reward us. This may be the ship that is being waited on. And when the ship doesn't come, you've gotta adapt, and let go of whatever you were waiting on, or you've got to take control of your life more.

you may get mad at your walls because they're the only ones that see the real you. They see everything: the loneliness, the boredom, the genuine love and concern....all the good and bad in you, and yet they have no comfort to offer, nothing to say.

Now, switching gears, I think the second verse is about a loss of identity in a coming world crisis.
"The prick of a feather could make a kingdom burn and bloodshed start." i see this as predicting that the world is approaching some kind of volatile instability, on the verge of revolution or complete chaos.

"The falling out made me a shadow in the shape of wonder."
I feel this could refer to a complete existential crisis, where everything is stripped off of you into you barely exist but as a shadow. His extreme state of wonder and awe has turned him into a dumbfounded shadow. If that makes any sense.

If she's going under....I take this to mean him and the world he is in. If everything gets more chaotic, he's not always in control of the boat, but he'll ride it out.

I take the last bit about catching a monster to be some metaphor about art and the artist trying to capture beauty. The artist's struggle to capture monstrous beauty and dissect it into pieces.

And finally "communication is easy as the ocean." This is just a reminder of how easy and fluid communication can be when we let it flow in and out like the ocean.

But by far the best part of this song is the dreamy breakdown at the end of the song.

These are just random thoughts...my own connections. hope you enjoyed. I'd love some feedback.

MGMT – Weekend Wars Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about being so fed up with the modern world that you almost anticipate the post-apocalyptic world.

I interpret weekend wars as just the struggle to plan a good weekend. There is a certain social chaos on weekends. You want to see all of your friends, you have to make many decisions on how to spend your time. Weekends are supposed to be enjoyable, and yet sometimes they can get bogged down just deciding how to spend your most precious time.

The singer would rather a simple life on an island rather than having to love or think too much planning out the weekend wars.
I see this song as saying "I'm tired of fighting the weekend wars, so bring on the chaos!"

"I'm a curse and I'm a sound,
When I open up my mouth,
There's a reason I don't win,
I don't know how to begin."

I see this last stanza is the frustration of not being able to properly express yourself. There can be so much to say, and feelings can get so complex, that you have nowhere to begin explaining yourself.

Animal Collective – Safer Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite line, from which I interpret the whole song

"I don't know if there's any real danger, but all the creatures know it's safer in the dark"

To me, It's about being honest and open to learning new things. If you're going to learn new things, you have to leave the safety of your cave and make yourself vulnerable. You have to take risks if you want to grow.

This is a very scary thing, to let go of old ideas, and see yourself change, but what after all is there to be afraid of?

Animal Collective – Cuckoo Cuckoo Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's so much actual dying, but more the metaphorical dying that happens as we go from childhood to adulthood.
"How I lost my boy" could mean he's lost the boy that was inside him, his child-like qualities.
"And little kids slide down on steel park slides
Little kids can't play with things that died."
Now that's he's an adult, he's sort of a dead child. He can't relate to children and they can't relate or (or play) with him.
Seeing all these kids having their happy time makes him want to be a kid again and lie in his mother's arms. But she's elsewhere doing her own thing and her kids are already grown up.
"Sometimes all I want's one favorite song
And two to three minutes don't seem so long"
This line reminds me of how you can form such an intense connection with a song, and how it can take you away from the hassle of everyday life, even if it's only for a few minutes.

Great song from a great album.

Animal Collective – #1 Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe I'm overthinking this, but here's what I see:

"We'll hope you dance to your bad weather
Young love is fine"
This part tells me that as a parent, you have to let your kids work things out on their own, no matter how foolish they're acting, and eventually they'll come back around. This goes for any relationship where someone put you off.

And later in the song: "
"Don't worry about why
And split your head
And sleep unmolded
Young love is blind"
There's sympathy and understanding once the child has come back around. And saying "young love is blind," you're now being more honest with the person.
You're not letting them stay disillusionioned saying "young love is fine." It's being sympathetic and understanding w/o saying "see, I told you so."

That's my take at least. I'd like to hear more comments from other people.

For me, this song is the relationship between parents and child, and how that relationship changes over time.
"It seems like days since you rejected
Your mom and I"
As a young teen, sometimes you want to get away from your parents. You reject them and you seek for independence.
Once you get that independence, you realize it's not all fun and games, and sometimes you long to get back to your parents, who you once rejected. It's a nostalgia for the simpler times when you're parents adored you and took care of important things for you.
"You wonder why it can't stay simple
Your mom and I
To pet your head
And dress your letters"

Animal Collective – Chores Lyrics 17 years ago
I like that they use the word "chores"
Kind of reminds me of all the chores we had to do as kids. And how adult jobs are just a continuation of that.
the word "Chores" also has a negative connotation. No one really likes doing chores. Likewise, we don't always like our daytime jobs, but we take on the responsibility, and do our part to keep the economy flowing.

I think it's a very humble song too.
"I only want the time to do one thing that I like."
He's willing to give up almost all of his time doing these chores if he can just have a little time to himself to get stoned and go for a walk alone. Fucking beautiful.

While the lyric is definately "stoned," I don't the song is trying to glorify drugs. The lyric "when there's no one watching" implies that he just wants to be alone and at peace, not start a fucking riot or a party.

So basically, if you're a contributing member of society, and you're not trying to stir up trouble, you should be allowed to do what you want (whether it's getting stoned or going sailing).
