Two Gallants – The Hand That Held Me Down Lyrics | 12 years ago |
alternate lyrics from live version; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3UU-bBipqw The hollow of the evening, the flicker of your love the shadow of your bedside lamp outshines the stars above the heights to which you drag me, just to hurl your scorn the trumpets play the livelong day, but they blow so forlorn do you hold the hand that held me down? is your kindness just pretense? when you stumble on your last go-round who will come to your defense? among your pigs and cowards, i take my daily meal you said farewell so tastelessly with breadcrumbs at your heels and i've unveiled my weakness on your rodeo of tears and you hum under your breath, pretending not to hear did you kiss the hand that held me down? was your kindness just pretense? and when there's dust upon your ragged crown who will stand at your defense? when i come back from this evening, to the flicker of your love and madness from the hearts you claim as though you come for love (??? unsure about this) and you watch me come for miles, from your white ivory tower i've been around your every house, i come back every hour could you be the hand that held me down? when i'm sick with common sense when your lowliness wants me around when I (??? can't make this out) and ever since your epitaph was splattered on my wall no-one comes to call, they can't stand the stench but i still sing your praises every time the curtain calls I alone will stand at your defense. |
Jens Lekman – An Argument With Myself Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Compiling what others have said: Having an argument with myself down Victoria Street Passing the market now, the windows IN NEON illuminating my path to defeat Your grinning face scaring a poor parakeet Your HEAVY breathing scaring the wind So rich on Summer and so sweet Fuck you, no, you fuck you! You didn't come here for nothing, did you? I know that's what you've been saying lately But let me draw attention to a exhibit B A HONEYSUCKLE in a plastic envelope and put the flower UNDERNEATH A microscope See what's written on the petals Look closer, that's her initials |

Oops..."dime" |
Jens Lekman – Cowboy Boots Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wait...pretty sure "For something flippable like a die" should be "For something flippable like a dim" (rhymes with "times," makes more sense) |
Jens Lekman – Cowboy Boots Lyrics | 12 years ago |
You know the thing when you have the same dream Seven hundred thirty nights in a row And when you think your dream is tryin' to tell you something And you say "tell me something I don't already know" Just pour me a drink so I can refuse To raise my glass to these sad and worn out midnight shoes In my next dream I want a pair of cowboy boots The kind that walks the straightest and most narrow route Anywhere but back to you Here we are down the same old street Here we are with nothing to say Your little hand trying to make it into hers But she puts it in her pocket and looks away I keep my eyes on the sidewalk For something flippable like a die I wanna know how you forgive someone Someone you've forgiven so many times Just pour me a drink so I can refuse To raise my glass to these sad and worn out midnight shoes In my next dream I want a pair of cowboy boots The kind that walks the straightest and most narrow route Anywhere but back to you Anywhere but back to you |

One more: "backseats and drunks, sweets, and half-Greeks" = "backseats and drunk suites and half-Greeks" |

"How long it's been there, two years, has it? ????? smell like cigarette" I hear: "how long's it been there, two years i bet have a sniff it smells like a cigarette" Also, "The lonely life from the town hall club tower" = "the lonely light from the town hall clock tower" And about the last verse...yeah, I have no idea :( |
Fleet Foxes – Someone You'd Admire Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Thank you for submitting this! When I first heard this song I probably spent a day just trying to figure out the first two lines. It totally makes sense now, haha. I'm not sure if my correction was right, but I guess we'll find out once we get a lyrics booklet. |

One of them wants only to be someone you'd admire One would as soon just throw you on the fire |
The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener Lyrics | 14 years ago |
To me this song is very clearly about deception. The narrator of the song lies to his lover about everything (the first impression I got was that he's cheating on her, but the imagery suggests that he's lying to her about his very identity). He is paranoid over her finding out these things, so he metaphorically kills and buries any evidence that might lead her to find out. The lyrics show that these things are done not out of love but out of fear and paranoia: "I sense a spy up in the chimney From all the evidence I've burned I guess he'll read it in the smoke now And soon to ashes I'll return" Once this imaginary spy spills the beans to his lover, then "soon to ashes I'll return" -- it'll be all over. The main point of the song is in the last two stanzas: "So now we're dancing through the garden And what a garden I have made And now that death will grow my jasmine I find it soothing I'm afraid Now there is no need for suspicion There ain't no frog kissing your hand I won't be lying when I tell you That I'm a gardner I'm a man In your eyes babe" The garden is his relationship with this person. It has only grown because he buried the runner, the spy, and the leak. These are things that he "senses" -- they aren't real. They're products of his paranoid and guilty mind. The only reason they're enjoying the relationship ("dancing through the garden") is because he forces down all those paranoid feelings, something that he finds "soothing." In conclusion, this narrator is a manipulating scumbag. This is emphasized when he says: "I won't be lying when I tell you / That I'm a gardner I'm a man / in your eyes, babe." Yeah, this is the one thing he has said to his lover that ISN'T a lie. And notice, it has nothing to do with who he really is, just with how she sees him. This is because she would leave him if she discovered who he really was, what he has done. Another really interesting part is that all of this is foreshadowed with the line: "Although my judgement's known to fail..." Great song. |
The Flaming Lips – In the Morning of the Magicians Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I have a more optimistic viewpoint of the song than others here--possibly because the lyrics here are wrong. The correct line is: "Is to love just a waste? How can it matter?" The "how can" to me signals that yes, although we're merely tiny specks in a huge unpredictable universe, it is never a waste to love one another. In fact, I'd argue that that's the whole point of the song because it works with the previous question: "What is love and what is hate? And why does it matter?" The first question does not imply that love and hate don't matter, but rather that wondering what they mean is pointless and they are defined by the fact that they exist. Similarly, the "How can it matter" does not mean to have "it" refer to "love." The "it" instead refers to questioning whether or not love is a waste, which makes a lot more sense to me. |
Björk – Unravel Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yadarfyn, when she says "we'll have to make new love," she probably isn't referring to sex. She says the devil collects their love and will never return it. But that doesn't mean she (and they) can't make it again. Defying the devil in the honor of love. See Orange_Morendo's comment, too. Amazing song. |
The National – Start a War Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Doesn't "walk away now and you're gonna start a war" imply that the speaker is ready to fight to keep the person with him? I would agree with the "goodbye song" theory if the lyrics were "walk away now, OR you're gonna start a war." But it's "and," so the war would be a result of her leaving. Just something I noticed. |
