To me, it is more like …
She loves him, but he says no to her. He says he still loves her or that he still wants to be with her as a friend, but she can’t accept that. She watches him go, and sometimes she can accept it and sometimes she can’t. She tried to do as she pleases and go on, but she can’t and now she’s on her knees. He is such a part of her, something that she thinks about all the time. He is everything she wants he’s “starry”, and she just keeps falling away. She can’t get over him even though she wants to. And she asks something that she loves, the “clam, cab, cockle, cowrie” from the ocean that she loves, to look at her… she wants to know that something can love her back. |

This really is an amazing song. I see it as he is talking about a girl who has just ended their relationship and he can't understand why and he can't accept it. "You stood there and you said nothing
That's what shattered my heart to bits", thats what happened and then he says "I'm in the dirt and in the gutter", so he's depressed and feeling alone. He keeps saying "clearly this isn't my life" and it's like he's denying the whole thing, and its so hard for him to accept because he loved her.

Yeah that really works, especially considering the title of the song. But ofr some reason I see it as being really romantic. I see it as being about soul mates, two people who were meant to be together because they "got the same heart", and while they are together nothing can bother them, upset them, ot mess them up because they are so strong together. It talks about fever, massacre, animals, blood ... but they ar eon the "ousite of everything" because none of that can end their love for eachother. |

I kind of see the mental house thing as being a metaphor for something like how his past is upsetting and "Theres a place we all go when we lose the chase" is like when everythign is going good and them something bad happens that reminds you of your past, and how it's happened before. You get wrapped up in your past and your memories and it's not a good kind of remembering, it haunts him - "everybody's scared of this place".
"i hope you're satisfied, isolation pushes past self hatred, guilt and shame" I think that this line kind of shows how it's about a past relatioship, maybe this is after a break-up ... and he's remembering how it's all happened before and he's upset about it all ... and is wrapped up in all of the happy moments they had together and now that its relaly over it haunts him.
Maybe im twisting this around too much, I don't know. haha |

It's a really beautiful song ... one of my favourites, I am surprised no one has really commented on it yet. It's one of the first Feist songs I ever heard. |
