Yeah, the eagle bit isn't about escaping. It's about having the bird's eye view and long-range vision of the eagle.
And I do think this song, however well-intentioned, is a little clunky.

This son is about nostalgia and the passing of time. Kind of like how Simon and Garfunkel sing about Joe Dimaggio, but Skynyrd sings about Tuesday Weld, the model and actress from the late fifties and early sixties. When she got married in '65 it marked the passing of an era.

TP said in an interview once that this song was actually about Eddie Van Halen, who couldn't cut it in the music industry and ended up just being a standin for the studio musician who actually played all his parts. In concerts, they would project film footage of the studio musician's hands onto Eddie's to maintain the illusion. |

Actually, what happened is that Jeff Lynne's dog ("good girl") accidentally licked some acid that TP left laying around. She jumped out of their car (on Ventura Blvd.), where she was kidnapped by a gang of vivasectionists. TP felt bad about it, and, tripping on some bad acid, went around posting signs around town with her name on it. |

Um, that's not what Naturalization means. Naturalization is the process of an immigrant's becoming a citizen of whatever country they moved into.
Anyway, I used to think the song was about something sexual (e.g., relations between a man and a sixteen year-ld girl), then I thought it was about marijuana (I mean, come on... coughing and Jamaican accents?), and then I thought it was about immigration...
I think instead it's just general, like Phlup said -- all these things, more things that we haven't even thought of, and none of these things. |
