The Academy Is... – Skeptics and True Believers Lyrics 15 years ago
I think if you look closer this is a very clever song. The title refers to Rene Descartes' Meditations, specifically Meditation number One. In the Meditations, Descartes attempts to use foundationalism, an architecture analogy to indicate that all knowlege we have, and in the case of this song, all relationships are based on a hierarchy of experience from a more basic source. We must ensure that the foundation of what we hold dear is strong before attempting to build knowledge and relationships off it. Descartes used methods of doubt to construct the foundation. He said we should doubt EVERYTHING and that which stands the test of doubt is certain and everything else must be cast aside. Those that remain dubious of all knowledge and relationships are called skeptics. Those that have faith in things, such as self and knowledge become the true believers. This whole song is a series of doubts about the relationship followed by a reassuring voice "Don't be so scarred to take a second for reflection, see what you're made of" The point of the song is that he's trying to find out if the relationship is worthy of being a foundation of life or not through philosophical skepticism. Pretty awesome song.

Neil Halstead – Paint A Face Lyrics 15 years ago
I saw Neil two nights ago at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC. This is my favorite song of his. His mix of mandolin, guitar and beat structure are really appealing in this song, and the lyrics are subtly beautiful.

John Butler Trio – Losing You Lyrics 17 years ago
"I'll get plenty o' rest when I am dead" not "I'll get pure and so when I am there"
and
"And I don't mind losing money," not "And now that I'm losing money,"

This is a great song, so simple. It kind of reminds me of Jack Johnson's Do You Remember in the way his voice follows his plucking.

John Butler Trio – Gonna Take It Lyrics 17 years ago
These lyrics really speak to me because they're talking about a love that isn't new but the speaker wants to keep the love pure like when you first fall. My favorite line in the song is when she says "taste the spice, don't just hang it up in the corner where it looks nice. Fantastic.

John Butler Trio – Gonna Take It Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is amazing. The lyrics are off though:

Smile, your lovely smile
Tell me of tomorrows for awhile
And hold my hand,
and tell me, tell me, tell me you understand

Oh, I know you're name
and there ain't no one else
I trust now with this shame
So, come on and open up your heart
and I will take it back to the beggining
I will

Yes I am
gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start

gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start

Yes I am weary, I am torn
Been fighting a war that started before
yes, i was born
And now before it tears my heart clean apart
this is my proclamation,
this is me

and she said, "taste the spice,
don't just hang it up in the corner
where it looks nice."
And the same, well, needs to be said,
'Cuz your health man is your wealth,
and you're a long time dead.

Yes I am,
gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start

gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start

gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start

gonna take it
gonna take it
gonna take it, right back from the start.
