Josh Garrels – White Owl Lyrics 12 years ago
Good explanation TwiceBorn! A white owl in a dark night. Great metaphor.

Josh Garrels – Ulysses Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a fabulous song. It's one of my favorites on the album. Many of Josh's songs on this album speak of a longing for the resurrection of all things. He's always looking forward to something better, and I think he most often sees the truth that this more difficult phase of the journey is worth the glory that awaits.

But in this song I see something a bit different. Josh is a master with metaphor and seamlessly incorporates history and literature into his songs in a fascinating way. Sea and water imagery especially run throughout the album. This song, unlike some of his others, feels old and weary. Even some of the lyrics hint at that. The impression I'm getting is a guy who is feeling weighed down by the burdens of this life but has a determination (not entirely by his own strength) to make it through. But he shows this by using a metaphor of getting home to a person.

This seems to come to a head with his usage of the myth of the sirens. Greek poets wrote of bird-women whose song was so irresistible that the sailors on passing ships couldn't resist sailing towards the sound of their voices only to have their boats dashed on the edges of the rocky cliffs where the sirens lived. In the Odyssey, Odysseus wants to hear the sound of their voices but knowing the danger, he makes his crew stop their ears with beeswax and bind him to the mast. Directing them not to untie him no matter what he did or said, they passed by the cliffs safely achieving what was thought to be impossible.

It's a really powerful metaphor that fits with the theme and feel of the song and serves to illustrate the desperate difficulty of the situation. It also fits with the idea that the song is referring to a person because Odysseus was trying to get home to his wife who assumes he has died in the Trojan war.

All in all, it's a powerful and beautiful song that seems to include multiple themes and topics.

Demon Hunter – The Tide Began To Rise Lyrics 15 years ago
So now I’m stuck here
Between the guilty and the insincere

At first when I'd listened to this song a few times I had no idea what these two lines meant... but then one day I figured it out cause it was exactly what I was feeling...

You know when you've sinned over and over again... and it pulls you away from God... you know you're guilty... but you've done it so many times... you don't sincerely feel sorry for what you've done... at least not at that moment. I've felt that so many times before and this line was always so helpful to me. In those moments I wouldn't know how to respond. I knew that sin didn't have to separate us from God because of Christ's sacrifice... but I felt that I couldn't draw close to God because I didn't feel guilty enough about my sin. A really tough spot to be... but in the end... its a wake up call to go back to the only person that matters... Jesus.

Thousand Foot Krutch – Favorite Disease Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree... but couldn't the kill me, heal me part be more of a parallel to the monster, saint part? It seems to me that "you're killing me" when I feel like a monster, but it keeps me real in that I realize my brokenness and need for a savior. And then the "you're healing me" part referring to the cleansing of my sins...referring to the saint part of the chorus.

Thousand Foot Krutch – New Drug Lyrics 16 years ago
yep. Not that deep. But so true. I guess God's kinda like a drug in that we need him and he fixes everything...the only difference is once we're addicted, the "high" doesn't go away. Pretty nice.

Thousand Foot Krutch – Falls Apart Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this story is progressive. This guy is trying to make it morally on his own steam and realizes he cant. And then it all becomes clear why this is the case: he stopped relying on God.

"I’m so behind, you’re so far above me
And you’ll always be the wind under my wings, above me’’
This is how I've felt when I realize how pitiful my best efforts are. God just lifts us up when we throw ourselves on him.

Thousand Foot Krutch – The Flame In All Of Us Lyrics 16 years ago
Also, some of the lyrics are wrong in the above post.

This world has taken me by storm, it makes me feel like running, this place is making me
transform until i feel like nothing. It the strength in you and me... that surrounds
everything, The way you look out for me, The way you burn.

It's the flame, in all of us, the same, that makes us feel this, falme, in all of us, the sae,
that makes us feel it.

We are the youth, of yesterday, we've brought you pain and sorrow, that's what they say, but
they paved the way we are the new tomorrow, it's the strength in you and me... that surrounds
everything, the way you look out for me, the way you burn.

It's the flame, in all of us, the same, that makes us feel this, flame, in all of us, the
same, that makes us, it's the flame, in all of us, the same, that makes us feel, this, flame,in
all of us, te same, that makes us feel it

It's the flame in all of us that makes, the change in all of us, that takes, the blame in all
of us, and still keeps it alive.

I think you are right in that God is fighting for us. But as to what the flame is that is in all of us, (I'm assuming he's referring to christians here) the first thing that came to my mind was the Holy Spirit that sustains us and in a sense, keeps us running. God is looking out for us by sending his helper who transforms us into new people. It's that flame that keeps us alive in Christ. I guess I thought of this first because of Pentecost. Makes sense, but there's always more than one way to interpret art.

Relient K – The Thief Lyrics 16 years ago
I read somewhere in the fine print on the CD that one of the band's best friends was lost at sea when his ship went down in a storm. They dedicated this EP to him. So I take this song to refer to him. "And I can't see you getting used to living in the midst of your perfection." It all kind of makes sense...with the album art... and "somewhere the sun is always shining..." That's how I take it. Great song.
