Stars – Wanderers Lyrics 6 years ago
Amy would know for sure but I remember reading that this song was inspired by the great Gord Downie. I would love to hear the whole story....

Torres – Three Futures Lyrics 6 years ago
A woman, wise beyond her years, explains how she broke someone’s heart...and she knew she was doing it right from the start. She quietly asks for forgiveness. Sad. I love it.

Torres – New Skin Lyrics 6 years ago
I think a lot about Mackenzie. I mean, brilliantly talented but with a level of complexity that is so intriguing.

I think this song encapsulates my impression of the torment.

Read any of her interviews and you see that she grew up in a deeply religious houehold. And then listen to the songs and imho I think it’s pretty clear that she is gay.

Now, listen to this song with that in mind and I think it’s really clear. That’s the New Skin that she’s wearing. And she’s nervous about how her family is going to react.

Torres – When Winter's Over Lyrics 6 years ago
Breakup song. Someone left her and says they're never coming back. She doesn't care, she waiting. They'll come back. She's sure of its. And she's gonna wait forever if she has to.

Torres – November Baby Lyrics 6 years ago
What is wrong with you people? This woman is a GD genius and there are barely any comments about the lyrics? :)

Ok just kidding.

Her songs are so dark. I love them all. To me this is a song about obsession with someone else, who does not reciprocate. And she is hopeless.

The Raspberries – Go All The Way Lyrics 6 years ago
Thanks for reminding me how old I am. Some current obscure songs have 40-50 comments, and for a classic like this one, I am the fifth comment. Poor Eric Carmen...

A great power pop song. Here's what he knew very well. The chorus is the part of the song that everyone remembered and hummed/sang, and in this song, the verses are only a couple of words and the chorus is really long. Genius.

Oh the Marine Girls get no respect.

Cute little ditty that is a perfect summer distraction song

Saint Etienne – Join Our Club Lyrics 7 years ago
A nice "girl power" theme but I think it's really notable as another example of Saint Etienne showing their willingness to experiment with creative song structures. Where most songs have the traditional "verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus" structure, this one starts straight into the chorus and then moves to verses. A pretty cool innovation for a group that most people think of as a fully pop band.

(For another example see "Sylvie"

Stars – The Loose Ends Will Make Knots Lyrics 9 years ago
How are there no comments here??? This is a great song!

Of course if we have Torq and Amy singing to each other, it must be a breakup song. Torq's character is explaining why he ended the relationship, and Amy is lamenting....beautiful

Stars – Going, Going, Gone Lyrics 9 years ago
"Long time listener, first time caller", as the saying goes...

I have a habit of cruising around the "Stars" songs on my phone, occasionally finding one that I obsess on, interpreting it in my head, and then coming here to see what the crowdsourced interpretation is.

On this song, I was in a totally different place than any of you, and I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse. IIRC my first listens were to the version where Torq does not sing the "return" of the "call and return" in the chorus and I think that set me off on a very different direction.

To me, cellophane is a metaphor for heroin, since you buy it in cellophane bags. Listen to the whole song with that in mind and it could be interpreted as a piece where Amy/Emily is singing about a friend or a sister, who's killing time between hits, maybe turning tricks to pay for the dope, maybe using gin and lime as a bridge between hits...and worried if maybe she is next.

Or am I totally whacked?

PS I didn't see the spot where Torq talks about the mall, but I have occasionally seen him push interpretations towards very simple meanings, versus the deep ones that we write about here. Who's right or who's wrong? That's why it's poetry - we all see what we want to see. (Worst offender in this case is Carl Newman of the New Pornographers, who more-or-less says the words are chosen only because they rhyme with each other!)

The New Pornographers – Sing Me Spanish Techno Lyrics 17 years ago
God, I love AC's writing! Reminds me of trying to parse J. Alfred Prufrock.

I think the third verse starts "Go to now, after wiring the thing to explode"...in other words, he's blowing himself out of his rut. The next line shows how he's waiting to see how his life is going to change.
