straightforward enough, isn't it. i think everyone could write the same song, just with different examples. i would think (and i should probably give the poor guy a break and stop just assuming every song he writes is related to take that) that in his case the main confusion is that he doesn't know what he wants >> "thinking of people calling my name but living life in solitude" << as he's always thinking about his old life and it's always on his mind, yet he doesn't really want to 'go out there' or do anything anyway >> "thinking of kissing a girl in the park but I'd rather be walking my dog". and then i suppose, just indecisiveness in general when you don't know where you're going... >> "thinking of teaching myself to play chess but i'd rather play drafts instead".
i especially like lines like "this evening I'm finding myself". everyone always gets those bursts of enlightenment and thinks 'ah yes i've got it now!' but by the next day you're always just back to your old confused self :P |

That's interesting, FosterWPL! If it is in any way related to Take That or Robbie, I think you're probably right - I never saw it that way before. Overall it could be about a conviction he had (at the time of writing) that either Take That would reform or that he'd become as sucessful as they'd been, and that he's kind of clutching at straws for it (he's not necessarily desperate, he just can't seem to shake the belief).
I agree that a 'friend' is very likely just himself, or at least, a little part of him that's [possibly guiltily and probably secretly] believing something is going to happen when it's not likely, whereas he himself, the 'real' him, is being more realistic and knows it won't, hence the 'think he's had his time, think he's lost his mind'. I think songwriters use the 'friend' thing alot, sometimes with good reason but sometimes I think simply because it looks and sounds better than just saying 'I, I, I' all the time. And in this case I do think he'd be talking about just one part of himself, and labelling that 'a friend' seems the most straightforward way about it. |

At the end, I always thought they were saying 'so illogical', not 'psychological'... the lyrics on the album say psychological though which I think is a pity, I kind of prefer my version :P 'So illogical' makes more sense to me. |

There definitely needs to be more appreciation for this song... the lyrics are kind of sickeningly sweet but you can't help but really like them anyway, it's a subtle kind of cleverness on Take That's part the way the lines are put together. |

i think this is definitely more obvious than it seems; it's just about walking with a kid who is asking these questions. it's called 'counting blue cars' because as they go, they're playing and being so innocent and chidlish, yet he's asking these questions. the kid has probably just heard things about 'god' and is curious, and is just walking down the street 'trying to find her' and wondering where she is. |

it's not about drugs; i think it's to be taken pretty literally... some new foreign girl is in town and although she can't speak much english, all the guys are fantasizing about her (and the local girls aren't happy, obviously) and trying to impress her (in this case with a new car...). the band are from a small town themselves so that would make sense. |

Whoever said this was overrated was right. lt's way too repeatitive and boring; the lyrics are okay, but ANY half-decent song writer can write a song about war like this one, seriously. lt's not smart or clever in anyway, but just because it's about something that alot of people can relate to doesn't mean it's so 'omgg emotional and touchingg'. The 'believe, you want this' part is pretty good but the rest... but how people thing this is song is oh-so-deep is and amazing is crazy. Seriously.l like AvA but this is the only song l have heard off of the old album, and if it's the best, well then the others must not be very good. (this isn't even very catchy!)
Uhh, although l prefer Blink l'm actually not being biased here. AvA are good, but this song is a bit overrated here. |

lt does sort of suck that BFS stole their thunder, but it's not like they're not minting it for writing the goddamn thing in the first place (BFS get more publicity but l'd say the songwriter of SR-17 is getting more money)
l heard the BFS version first and loved it, and l love lots of other BFS songs, but after 5 or 6 listens l like this version of this song better. |

Everyone else has said it all, really.
lt seems that his life isn't as simple and bright as it was when he was young (when they lay on the grass having some laughs, drinking, etc.) and now he's dwelling on it and remembering a girl that he seemed to let slip away (he was young and it probably just didn't matter then) and now he's wondering why (and quite possibly regretting it, since she seemed so wonderful and 'made him feel like the one') -- but he also seems proud of what he's done with his life (presuming they're alot older now and they're lived alot since then) and wants her to see him now. Alot of people go through it, which makes the song even better; losing touch with a good friend when they're young and later on wondering where they are now, and longing to meet them again and wanting for them to see you now.
Amazing, amazing song. lt makes me teary eyed alot, he captured the mood so perfectly that l feel l have his memories and l understand exactly how he feels (although in reality, l have no idea and l've never experienced anything like that.) |

Telerion, sure, I don't mind you disliking SP... but please, if you're judging them on "You're All I Have" and "Chasing Cars", please don't, because they're by far SP's worst songs. Even me, as a huge SP fan will admit that You're All I Have and CC are, well... quite crappy. I don't really know why they did so well when SP have songs that are so, so much better. The lyrics are... yeah, awful, I agree. Some of their songs have great lyrics, far from simple. :/ |
