Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues Lyrics

The snowflake part is really an existential question: Would it better to be unique but disconnected from everyone and any greater purpose? Our society romances the concept of uniqueness, but maybe there is allure to serving a greater power.
Also, I haven't seen it mentioned but The Armies of the Night" is a book by Norman Mailer about an anti-war march in DC during the Vietnam War. So for everyone suggesting this song may be about war and/or communism, I think they are right.
Ultimately though, I think the song just pleads for simplicity. Give me an orchard where I can work hard enjoy the fruits of my labor. Give me a wife who also has a simple country job. I don't think he's coming to a conclusion about the questions posed above but instead just simply asking for love and happiness.
I don't know what to make of the last line... |

here's my take, it's rather simple: the song is about how people use sex to replace intimacy and cover up a non-existent emotional bond when really that's what's most important in a relationship. i.e. swallowing words while giving head
and for everyone who thinks there has to be some gay connotations, it could be similar in that he's just saying that the physical aspect (gender) isn't as important as the bond |

has anyone ever read the unbearable lightness of being. there is a section in the book called "misunderstood words." i think they address the exact same thing, the role and inadequacy of language in a relationship. i love them both. |
