I do think that is is an antiwar/antibush song, but you could also look into it in a historical manner. Back a while ago, the church was corrupt (well, loads more than it is today) and took advantge of its christian and catholic followers. Anyone heard of the spanish inquisition? THe people were forced to join the church or would be killed or thrown out of spain. They influenced people to at least become catholics or christian, but they also "seduced" some people to join the church itself by offering protection from being drafetd into the war against the muslims and future wars. ALso the church memers themsleves were very wealthy and lived high class lies behind closed door with money they made people pay so they could get ino heaven. Some would join the church, but their family would not follow and the men were forced to fight, and if their family, for eample if they were jewish or muslim, were either tortured to death, sent into prisions or kicked out of their homes and exiled from the country. That's just another way to look at the song if Arcade Fire decides to put a more historical view on their song, but i'm not sure they would. |

The part he misses toward the end is supposed to be somethin like "To stick this generation". I dunno, he says it regretfully as soon as the songs over 'casue he had forgotten it. Poor Alex! I love this song, still havnt found the promised video Lotus 9... |

I think he's singing about wanting to protect his girlfriend. She wants to try to new things cause she's "sick and tired of being in the backround", but he's trying to keep her safe which is kind yet selfish at the same time because he's being over protective and holding her back. |

for the person who said that they were dissapointed w this album, the first time I heard it I wasnt to pleased with it, but now I'm obsessed! So maybe by now you've changed your mind. why would they mention tellys otherwise? It's an excellent song. I love Artcic Monkeys because their songs make loads of sense. |

wow, this songis amazing! I signed up just to comment on it. THe lyrics are intense, and when all of the sudden the guitar gets overwhelmingly powerfull and Alex souts "But I crumble compleatly when you cry", I dunno, it just gives me gosebumps. Amazing song, and now that I know what it was written about, it has even more of an impact on me. |
