Björk – Who Is It? Lyrics 14 years ago
Good defeats evil. Every time.
God = Good = win
Everything else = evil = lose

The 10 commandments are there to show us what sin is. Sin is what prevents us from being saved. Worshiping something other than the winner (winner = God) will prevent you from being saved.

Now that being said, the 10 commandments are not there to save us. The only thing that can save us the grace, the love of God. The 10 commandments just shows us all the things we do wrong so we know how much we need the grace of God.

So really, that is a commandment made out of love, like all the others.

Hopefully you understand... God is nothing but selfless, unconditional love. :)

Sufjan Stevens – The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmm… as far as the Christian view is concerned, this is what I’ve got, thanks to abottleofsomething and others.
Verse one
As abottleofsomething stated, is about a gambler (mountain of lies/card for my life = gambling) who has dug himself into quite a bit of trouble. For him, gambling was what his life revolved around, as with most gamblers. But he didn’t fair so well and is now in heaps of trouble. This is when he realizes that his way (which he thought was ‘something more’) really wasn’t all that great. So he calls on the Man of Steel, Man of Heart to help him realize what life is really about (tame our ways if we devise something halfways)

Chorus
Jesus came to recover the lost souls (only a steel man came to recover). He left his heavenly riches to do so (if he had run from gold, carry over). Christians celebrate a relationship with God and God is full of joy when we commit to him (we celebrate our sense of each other). We give God our hearts, he gives us eternal life [in a nutshell, lol] (we have a lot to give one another)

Verse 2
I don’t know what’s going on here, but I think it has something to do with the person being lost and confused (part unknown, if I knew what I read). But as far as that chorus is concerned, it’s basically the same as with verse 3s chorus.

Verse 3
The person was getting tired of their life situation for some reason or another (Took my bags, Illinois) and had a dream that the son died in a lake (dreamt the lake took my boy). This causes him/her to contemplate and look to Christ for comfort (Man of Steel, turn your ear to my part). This person knows Christ is wise (there are things you have said) and powerful (raise the boat, raise the dead) and realizes that even if we die in his grace (If you take us away) there is still something that can be said to comfort us (chorus).

Chorus
Jesus loves us. Real love. Deep love. Selfless love. And really, only a Jesus (a steel man) is capable of that kind of love (can be a lover). Because of that love, we can lean on him for anything, we can cry to him over anything (if he had hands to tremble all over) and certainly losing a loved one causes trembling. But even with death and loss, we can still celebrate the relationship we have with Christ (sense of each other) and give our hearts over to him in order spend eternal life with him (a lot to give one another) . ^_^

Patrick Wolf – Bloodbeat Lyrics 14 years ago
Haven't you just had one of those moods where you feel trapped and just wanted to go? You don't care about anything else you just have this urge to get out and do something alone and you don't care what you have to do to satiate that feeling you just know you need to do it. You don't care how dangerous anything is anymore you just have this deep need to do whatever it is. And it's not necessarily that things are messed up where you are. They can b perfectly fine but you still feel like you need to break free. I know I'm not explaining it anywhere near well enough but that song is symbolic of those moods... for me atleast.

Hanne Hukkelberg – The North Wind Lyrics 14 years ago
I remember hearing that story in elementary school. The moral was it's better to be warm and friendly than cold and mean.

My favorite line is "we only reveal ourselves and change ourselves when we're sheltered" and it's so true. But there's also a balance. Sadly as humans we can get sick of someone who's overbearingly warm. So she's telling the cold northwind to come back when this happens. It's the balance between good and evil.

The Tiny – Just Like You Lyrics 14 years ago
It's also about self sacrifice. That's a complicated and dangerous relationship but she loves (platonic or not) him so much she's willing to risk losing herself to help him. That's the part of this song I love so much.

The Tiny – Safe Than Sorry Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song, and while I knew what it meant it didn't really impact me as much as it did when I actually experienced it. I remember being at this guys house and calling for him in my head while he was napping on the couch. I didn't want anyone to hear me wanting him. But I just wanted him to come and tell me to stop worrying about it. Then this song popped in my head, lol.

And late at night when we'd sit on the couch and he's put his arm around my shoulders I couldn't breathe because I liked him and i wasn't supposed to.

She's trying to get rid of all the influencing factors, her brain, her selfishness, his hand, and just love but it's hard. I didn't realize how hard it was.

It's a forbidden and scary love, just like mine was.

The Tiny – Safe Than Sorry Lyrics 14 years ago
Woke up this early
but only to figure out the reason why I’m still around
Waiting for thoughts to resolve and become authentic
Still I don’t know what to say

Please lift your hand off my chest ‘cause I can’t
breathe with your love locked so tight around me
My love it isn’t as brave as yours love
I’ve learned to better be safe than sorry.

Fearless of lust
there you lie in my bed and don’t know how I am howling your name
Wishing for you to wake up and tell me to rearrange my mind
I’m not the same as I was

Please pull my brain out of my head ‘cause I can’t
Love with my thoughts wrapped so tight around me
My love it isn’t as brave as yours love
I’ve learned to better be safe than sorry.

You say that I should have learned by now
That my telepathic screams won't reach you
While you sleep, but still I try, so

Please peel my skin off my flesh 'cause I can't
love with myself wrapped so tight around me
My love it isn't as brave as yours, love
I’ve learned to better be safe than sorry

So please pull my brain out of my head cause I can’t
Love with my thoughts wrapped so tight around me
My love it isn’t as brave as yours love I’ve learned to better be safe than sorry.

Au Revoir Simone – A Violent Yet Flammable Word Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is referring to a Christian’s journey and conflicting emotions with following their own instincts or following Christ’s.
As a Christian you have to die to self and live a life for Christ. If you do you go to heaven. In revelation there is constant reference to "oceans of people" in the last days watching as Jesus comes back. Another key thing is that those who are in Christ get to ascend to heaven "early rise" while the earth burns "warm goodbyes"

Oceans shape the sides
(the people left behind)

Touching down in the spaces
Soaking (tears) from a warm goodbye (fire from hell)
An early rise offers kindly
(the option to go to heaven is a pretty kind offer)

Tonight I sleep to dream
Of a place that's calling me
It is always just a dream
Still I cannot forget what I have seen
The crowd's hard to believe
At their faces I'm looking
But your feet I'm following
In soft steps on a path the way you lead

I think this paragraph is about her going to dream of heaven. Christians feel a calling toward it and she can't help but think about it all the time. Here she focuses on the people again. She's saying there's so many people and she's trying to figure out who they all are. But all the time she's following the feet of Jesus and the path He leads her on.

I don't want to lose myself
It's a whisper
It's a funny thing
We fold like icicles on paper shelves
It's a pity to appear this way

As I mentioned before, a Christian must die to self. But here, she's hesitating. There is a small part of her (the whisper) that feels as if that dying to self would require her to lose herself. As a Christian it is morbidly funny, because you know that if you give up yourself you win soooo much more but for some reason you hard to shake that little whisper of yourself. This wavering of wills causes us to fall into sin (fold like icicles on paper shelves) and it is a pity when it happens.

You're flying when your foreign eyes
Trace the heights of the city

I think she’s referring to how Jesus would look upon heaven (which is referred to as a city in the bible) and by flying she means extreme joy. Jesus is happy because he’s bringing his followers to heaven.

Steaming
With rocks and clouds we breathe
Violent skies
A shock to my own body
Speech is wild
Alive sacred and sounding
Wild
From across and beyond, oh far beyond
This is two different parts being sung at the same time, probably referring to her conflicting emotions about Christianity. Follow Jesus or follow herself?

Steaming, violent skies, speech is wild. Wild.
I think this refers to the feeling of being in hell, which would result from her following herself.
With rocks and clouds we breath, a shock to my own body, alive sacred and sounding, from across and beyond, oh far beyond.
This part is her wanting to follow Jesus which would result in her going to heaven. When we go to heaven our bodies will be transformed which explains “a shock to my own body, alive, sacred and sounding” and then off to heaven “from across and beyond, oh so far beyond”.

Then she goes back to how she doesn’t want to lose herself. The way she wrote this shows that she clearly knows she has to “it’s a funny thing” “it’s a pity”. The problem is there’s this tiny part of her that doesn’t want to “it’s a whisper”

Hold, hold, hold on
I swear I saw it somewhere
Waving, wading, one, two, three, above the wakes that follow
Hold, hold, hold on
I swear I saw it somewhere
Waving, wading, one, two, three, above the wakes that follow

I don’t know what this means… Hmm…. Any ideas? I think she may have seen something that may want to hold her back from following Jesus, but I don’t know what she saw. And it was fleeting.

I don't want to lose myself
Tonight I sleep to dream of a place that's calling me
It's a whisper
It is always just a dream
It's a funny thing
Still I cannot forget what I have seen
We fold like icicles on paper shelves
With rocks and clouds we breathe, a shock to my own body
It's a pity
Alive sacred and sounding
To appear this way
From across and beyond, oh far beyond
Once again, it’s two different people singing this at the same time, her conflicting emotions.
Person 1:
I don’t want to lose myself. It’s a whisper, it’s a funny thing. We fold like icicles on paper shelves, it’s a pity to appear this way.
Person 2:
Tonight I sleep to dream of a place that’s calling me. It’s always just a dream, still I cannot forget what I have seen. With rocks and clouds we breathe, a shock to my own body. Alive, sacred and sounding. From across and beyond, oh so far beyond.
For me, I hear person one more at the beginning but when they reach the part “with rocks and clouds…” I hear person 2 more for the rest of the song.
I take that as while she is scared of losing herself, in the end the payoff is well worth it. And I think the way the song suddenly ends just adds more emphasis to the final choice to follow Christ.

Eh, I might be really far off but as a Christian this makes perfect sense to me. :)

Regina Spektor – December Lyrics 17 years ago
just building on mish-moshes. I do think that this is a song about a lover who wants their ex back. he/She believes that the person needs to realise that they are not in love with someone else and that they are missing out on somthing big and need to realise the love, apologise and come back.

we are not evacuating this house- she's basically speaking for her and her ex to the new lover telling her to give up and hit the road.

We don't belive in you and you're wrecking crew- she is still speaking for her ex telling the new lover that she doesn't believe there's a chance between the two and that she's a homewrecker.

Sia – Sunday Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually, Saturday is the day of rest according to the bible (sabbath). The catholics decided to change it to sunday. But i do think it's a religious refference, between the fact that jesus doesn't appreciate his people doing drugs and that sunday is "his day" according to the catholics and what not

Björk – Earth Intruders Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song has a lot to do with the destruction of the earth. We are intruding upon the earth and doing with it what we will and causing "turmoil and carnage" upon the natural system. I think she refers it kind of like a war upon the earth, reffering o humans as paratroopers and sharpshooters and the marching.

Voodoo is normally looked upon as a bad and desctructive force which would explain why humans are comming from it.

By bones, i think she means her descendants humans and by voltage she probably meant bad times. But she still loves the human race.

Metallic carnage probably refers to all the machines we implement to destroy the earth with "feriocity" and feel the speed refers to how quickly it's happening.

and the beast with many heads probably refers to the construction machines like bulldozers, wreaking balls, the claw stuff and steamrollers. After all, those machines are usually just defferent heads attached to the same frame of car right?

turmoil carnage rambling = death of earth

mudgraces and morbid trenches, the holes we cut in the earth for whatever purpose.

Forgive this tribe kinda sounds like she's the head of the tribe and she's reffering to it as if it was hers (i've guided my bones, my people, my tribe) and she's asking for forgiveness.
