The Goo Goo Dolls – Acoustic #3 Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the Goo Goo Dolls…and this song. They write the best lyrics. I believe this song is about somebody who is in a situation where they’re either being taken advantage of or not being treated right…in the third verse he mentions “your mother” and “your father”, and I’ve considered it, and the entire song could be about somebody being in a family without the unconditional love that is…unconditional. But I’m not sure if that’s the feeling I’m getting from the song…I think it’s just about somebody who’s in some situation. It could be about a family, a relationship, a friendship, or about politics even. I love the line “What’s the point in all this screaming/No one’s listening anyway”. And at the very end, he says “And you know I see right through you/When the world gets in your way”, and this shows that he was trying to help this person, but by the end of the verse…he says he can’t, because they’re not listening, and it’s hopeless. Great song. Definitely one of their best.

Blue October – Hate Me Lyrics 17 years ago
“I have to block out thoughts of you
So I don’t lose my head” is a line meaning that when he thinks about this certain person (his mother?), there are so many emotions (and guilt, which is expressed later in the song) that he will “lose my head” if he thinks about her. So he must block out these thoughts.

“Dropping little reels of tape
To remind me that I’m alone
Playing movies in my head
That make a porno feel like home”

I think the “little reels of tape” probably refers to the recording at the beginning of the song and others as well. These things that this person left behind probably remind him that she’s gone (dead?) and he no longer has the chance to make things right with her (which is, also, expressed later in the song). The rest of the verse, about the movies and porno, probably means that when he remembers his mother that certain memories play in his head, and from there he says a porno would feel like home. This most likely is not literal, but supposed to represent how bad these “movies in my head” make him feel, and a porno would make him feel better.

“There’s a burning in my pride
A nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you”

He feels bad for how he’s treated this certain person, and this is the “burning in his pride”. The nervous bleeding in my brain is probably something to exaggerate his point, saying that this makes him nervous, and all he wants is “an ounce of peace” for her.

“And will you never say that you love me
Just to put it in my face?”

This part confused me a little bit, because I got the impression that he didn’t, in face, want her to tell him she loved him. But I guess from her point of view, it would’ve been putting it in his face. Or maybe he’s asking her not to tell him she loves him.

“It is I that wanted this”

The things that he listed, “…will you never say that you love me…”, “…will you never try to reach me…”, he is probably stating in this lyric that through his actions and conscious that he really wished for these things, and is coming to terms with it.

“Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you”
“Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you”

Here, he is asking her to hate him because he feels like he doesn’t deserve her love, because of all the things he “didn’t do for you”. He thinks that she’d be better off without loving him, as in the lyrics “see what’s good for you”.

“I’m sober now…
…one thing that I won’t touch again”

That part of the second verse is probably directly referring to alcohol or drug addiction, and how she helped him with this sobriety. The addiction tore the two of them apart, as in “The one thing that always tore us apart”, and now that he realizes he didn’t give her the love she deserved, it is the “one thing that I won’t touch again”.

“In a sick way I want to thank you…
…made me compliment myself
When it was way too hard to take”

This part of the second verse most likely refers to his want to thank her for her unconditional love, even in the most “sick” of situations, such as when he was “busy waging wars on myself”. And she would try to stop the fight between himself and…himself. She never questioned how he felt about himself, which was obviously hatred, or “suicidal hatred”, so instead of trying to talk him out of hating himself, she would make him compliment himself, even when “it was way too hard to take”.

“So I’ll drive so fucking far away
That I’ll never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart
To leave me behind”

This is where he’s trying to both make himself feel less guilty, and make things better for this person by driving far away so that eventually they’ll forget each other (“I’ll never cross your mind”).

“And when the sad hard eyes say bye to you and wave”

This line makes me think of a funeral. This may be because I watched the music video before listening to the song by itself, but the “sad hard eyes” makes me think of eyes that have been crying (like at a funeral), and they would say goodbye to him because he would probably be one of the last people to leave the funeral since he was obviously so close to this person.

“Kicking shadows on the street
For every mistake that I have made”

He feels guilty for what he’s done (or hasn’t done…).

“And like a baby boy I never was a man
Until I saw your blue eyes cry”

He acted like a child by never thinking about her, or her feelings, and just himself (this is not how a man would act), until she cried. The crying could be literal, or he could be talking about a more profound moment where he realized how badly he’d been treating her.

“And I held your face in my hand
And then I found out that I can’t make it go away
Just make it stop
Come back and shine just like it used to be”

Here is another part that makes it seem like this person has died, because he’s holding her face in his hand, and at this point, he realizes that there’s no longer a way to make peace with her because she’s dead, and he regrets this.

“And then she whispered:
How could you do this to me?”

If she were dead, obviously this couldn’t have happened, and it’s probably just a way of giving an example to show how guilty he felt, and how he’s going to have to live with this for the rest of his life. If this person is still alive, and just left him, it probably means the same thing.

I’m not a huge fan of this song…music-wise. But I love the lyrics, and I can definitely relate, which doesn’t happen much.

In the music video, this song is obviously about his mother. The recording at the beginning of the song is also evidence that it is about his mother, but it may have just been inspired by her. It may not be about anyone in particular.

This is about the Vanity Fair article that claimed Frances Bean was born a crack baby.

"My favorite inside source." refers to the person close to them who gave the magazine the information.

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 17 years ago
After they ran into each other at a performance, Courtney sent Kurt a “heart shaped box”. That’s obviously where the inspiration for the song came from, and I’m guessing the song is about Love.

Foo Fighters – Razor Lyrics 17 years ago
I don’t think that this song is about any form of self abuse or suicide, and that the razor is a metaphor for some deeper meaning. I really don’t know what, though. Some of my thoughts are that he’s in a situation that he shouldn’t be in, and it’s “cuttin’ away” at him “day after day”. I like how in the first verse he says “Make up your mind, I need to know tonight.” And then in the second verse he says “Patience, my dear, we could spend a lifetime waiting here.” It’s contradictory, but maybe they’re referring to different things. I really don’t know what in particular this song could be about, so maybe it doesn’t have a certain meaning. It’s probably just “one of those songs” that could mean a sea of different things to different people, and the only official meaning is what is inside the artist’s (Dave’s) head.

Foo Fighters – Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Dave probably knows the word by heart, but I'm pretty sure he was just having fun. He probably could've come up with the lyrics if he hadn't been in front of an audience and been a little more serious about it all. But it was a great performance, none the less!

Nirvana – Something in the Way Lyrics 17 years ago
1. Kurt never lived underneath a bridge. Many people who have been interviewed claim that for him to have slept under the particular bridge he says he slept under, that it would’ve been impossible.

2. Kurt was always interested in animals, and at one point had a pet rat, so “the animals I’ve trapped have all become my pets.” part is very believable.

3. “And I’m living off of grass and drippings from the ceiling.” Is anybody else hearing “And I’m living off of grass and the drippings from my semen.” here? Especially on the Unplugged version.

Foo Fighters – Friend Of A Friend Lyrics 17 years ago
k…this might be a little long, but many explanations I’ve read frustrate me. this song is about the three band members, and what it was like for Dave to be put in a situation like this. he has said that when he first joined the band, he lived with krist. after a while of living with krist, it became too depressing and gross for him, so he moved in with kurt. he would "...stay up till the sun came up and sleep all day" while living with kurt, and eventually began to write songs. this being one of them.

“he needs a quiet room
with a lock to keep him
in its just a quiet room
and hes there”

I think that this first verse has been split into two halves, and this first part is about kurt. Dave observed kurt a lot while living with him, and it didn’t take long for him to be inspired to write a song about the three of them, so it would make sense for such a strong group of lyrics to be about kurt. Not to mention, this sounds like kurt.

"he plays an old guitar
with a coin found by the phone
it was his friends guitar".

my guess is that the first verse is about dave himself, since he had no guitar, and he was writing songs on one. he said on the skin and bones dvd that he had written that song on the guitar, and seeing as he didn't have a guitar, and lived with kurt, it would've been kurt's.

“hes never been in love
but he knows just what love is
he says nevermind
and no one speaks”

I think this verse is split in half as well, with this half being about kurt. I don’t think that nevermind could’ve been a reference to the record, seeing as how it wasn’t out when this song was written. Kurt had been in one serious relationship by this point, and had some un-official relationships going at this time with a couple of girls. In a biography, it is observed that kurt wanted the kind of family life with a stable relationship and love that is referenced in this verse; but it was often hard for kurt to find this. So maybe when “he says nevermind”, it means that he’s given up.

“he thinks he drinks too much
cause when he tells his two best friends
i think i drink too much
no one speaks”

this verse must be about krist, since krist was a drinker. I think the three band members had a silent friendship, especially with kurt’s personality in the mix, so the “no one speaks” refrain probably refers to this silent assurance that could’ve come from “his two best friends”.

And then the first verse, which like I said is most likely about dave, is repeated, and is a very nice conclusion to an great song. Dave said that writing this song (or maybe marigold) was the first time he ever picked up a guitar to write an acoustic song, and it came out beautifully.
