Wow, I really like most of these interpretations. It's definitely a confusing song, but I really like it.
Based on what nutmeq and twinparadox said, I propose this interpretation. I imagine Abraham leading Isaac to this lonesome hill (an altar) where an angel (of death) awaits. The daughter is obviously following Abraham and Isaac and hiding. Once the angel gives the order for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the daughter tells Abraham to stop. The angel then asks who she is.
Now, we're at the last verse, which seems to be the most confusing. This is my interpretation once again. "And with his sword up, raised for the slaughter"...Abraham is still in position to sacrifice his son. "Abraham's daughter raised her bow"...self-explanatory. She's probably aiming at Abraham, though. The angel: "How darest you, child, defy your father?" The daughter: "You'd better let young Isaac go." Much like the biblical story, Abraham doesn't say anything in this song. He is merely being obedient. I think this song is a narrative that only features a conversation between the angel and the daughter. |

Forgive me for taking a more realistic look at this song. This is just my opinion, but I think it's just about a mysterious guy. He's talking to a girl, and persuading her to make it official. She doesn't know everything about him and he seems to be a dark person because of past relationships, perhaps. She's intrigued by him, though. As for the darkness, monster, not understanding, etc. allusions, I just think they're metaphors for the unknown. Like I said, he's mysterious and guarded. He's urging the girl to step out on faith and trust that he's not going to hurt her. |

The last line of the second verse is "It is you who points the GUN"
I was surprised that this album got political, but I guess that's why this is a hidden track. To me, this song is saying that you should seek the truth without being influenced by what others tell you. Not going to lie, with the second verse, I couldn't help but think he is talking about the War in Iraq and the things Americans have been told to believe. Just my thoughts. |

This is a great song! I'm wondering, when she cries "save him", is she asking to save her child? I'm thinking that it's too late for her to be saved, and she realizes that. I don't think she's talking about her lover either. I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me. |

Yeah, I agree that this song is amazing. I really like how he starts off with the song as if he's telling the story to someone else, and as the song progresses, he is talking to her. The lyrics here don't reflect that, but if you listen, the last verse, he is using "you" instead of "she". |

I agree with almost everyone's interpretations of this song. It is most definitely a classic. I can't help but think of "Pretty Woman" when I hear this song. A rick guy falling for a prostitute and getting her to stop "selling her body to the night". |

I agree mostly with everyone has already said. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best song on the album, and it probably moves me the most as well. This almost sounds like a final farewell of a dying man. There doesn't appear to be regret in this song, but rather resilience and content. even during the hard times of his life, he is thankful because they made him stronger. Incredible song! |

I respect everyone's opinion on this song, but I want to throw a curveball. Could this song not be talking about a long-time friend who caught feelings for the other? Looking at the lyrics, it makes perfect sense. "Friends we've been for so long / Now true colors are showing" (they've been friends for a long time, but one of them has caught feelings and possibly fallen for the other). Many times when this happens, the friendship is never the same, and you have to "say goodbye" to the friendhip. "You cannot hide the way you feel inside I realize." I mean, this is just one perspective. I agree with everyone else's interpretation. I just wanted to look at it from another possible angle. |

Thanks for the lyrics. This is probably my favorite song on the album. I love how he spins the "intruder alert". At first, it's something that you wish had helped the first two people and then he flips it on its head, depending on your stance on immigration. The part at the end with Sarah Green, which I think is equally as moving as Lupe's lyrics. I'm not exactly sure what she says, but it sounds like...

While Kanye and Jay provide some nice verses, people aren't giving J-Ivy enough credit. I think his verse just sets the song over the top. I wish it had been the last verse because it would've ended the song on a selfless note than Jay-z only talking about himself. The song is amazing, though, and if I could put J-Ivy's verse somewhere as inspiration I most definitely would. |

First off, I love this song. I've come to the realization that people either love this song or hate it, but it something about it speaks to me. Also, where are all these people getting this love triangle from? Listening to the song and looking over the lyrics, it's just a song about an ex-couple who realize that still love each other. Diddy's pride is in the way and Keyshia is cried out. All he has to do is pick up the phone and call her, but his pride won't allow it. |
